UK's Tubby Smith to coach the Minn Golphers

Very surprising to me that Coach Smith will ge up the
last 4 years of his contract to coach the "Golden Golphers".
I wonder if the pressure got to him in Lexington not
winning his normal avg. of 26 wins a year. The local media
and the UK fans were after his a.ss for not advancing farther
into March Madness the last couple years. The UK A.D. also
said after the loss to Kansas last week that Tubby was their
coach next year. Look for Minn. to improve the next couple
of years in Big Ten Hoops.

My boss actually talked to Mitch Barnhart 2 weeks ago at a children's hockey game. As both had sons facing each other in a travelling tourney. The question was asked. Barnhart answered with were going to give Tubby some help. But I have a feeling on Tuesday that when they called for the meeting today that Barnhart changed his mind and gave him alternatives.

Supposedly Tubby was asked to change his staff and he refused. But then again, he was talking to Minnesota 6 weeks ago.

Change was needed, he's not a good recruiter and hadn't beaten anybody in the last 2 years with an 18-14 record in the SEC.

Kentucky Fans Stay Upset

Wait a minute. Alumni and fans wanted Tubby gone and they got their wish. Now they are upset that Tubby was heading to Minnesota anyways, before he was going to be actually forced out. I don't get it.

I didnt say that. I dont know too many people that are upset that he's leaving. Everybody says that we, the fans, are too harsh and expect too much, etc....just pointing out that there are 2 sides to the story. He was putting out feelers for a new job 6 weeks ago. Let's see, that was right when we were going on a 3 game losing streak and we had already lost to Vandy at home and Georgia-the ship was sinking. The reason you dont get it is b/c you are putting words in my mouth that I didnt say.

It's amazing the bitch and moaned about him, now they realize
he is leaving and might get another great coach like him. These
fans and alumni are completely nuts. Tubby won 20 games or
more each year and I guess that wasn't good enough. Whats Uk's
loss is a great big gain for the "Golden Golphers"

If I was replying to you. I would had quoted you! I was just replying stating at the time I wrote this, KY fans were upset either way. I work with 2 major Kentucky fans, and they were flying off the handle when they read Katz article. They had already got drunk with the excitement the day before when they found out Tubby was gone. Then it turned back to hatred after the article.

Gotcha, didnt know thats who you were referring to and since I was the only kentucky fan replying to the thread i figured you talking to me-not your coworkers

Good move for Tubby. Going from a place that demands excellence to a program that demands nothing.

With no expectations, he can easily get away with a crappy record, but unfortunately, the name "Minnesota" will not get you an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament like "Kentucky" does.

I have liked Kentucky since the days of Jamal Mashburn (when I was a kid) and hope that they can get a big-name coach to come in. Anyone heard any speculation into who they are looking for?

Seriously...

The Gophers will make the 'dance next year, BUT IT WILL HAVE NOTHIN TO DO WITH TUBBY BEIN THERE. If Molinari (the interim coach) would've stayed, he'd lead them to the dance next year. Their whole team is back (unless they lose some to transfer), and the big ten I think will be down next year. Wisconsin loses most of their main guys, and Oden will most likely go pro.

But hopefully it'll help Tubby with recruiting based on next year. When the Gophers ar in the 7-10 first round game next year, Tubby will be viewed as a genious. But it won't really have much to do with him. But I hope it'll help recruiting.
