Hey Steve, any chance of making a "Best of" on the ATRAB webpage? I've only been able to listen to a handful of the shows (all recently) but would love to go back and listen to a lot of the best old segments, particularly the ones related to major issues in racing that are still relevant. A "Charles Hatton Reading Room" equivalent on the website would be real cool.

Thank you if you set it up. I'm sure I can learn from going back and listening to anyone of the segments but a show like the Parimutuel Interests one is much more useful than hearing people make their picks on a card from six months ago.

What if there was a "triple crown/derby trail" section of replays? You know, a 'best of' those types of discussions archived together.. that would be some good stuff!!

Just listened to the re-play on the Doug O'Neil broadcast, good stuff. I loved Doug's joking reply of 'having something to work on' when the guy asked him about his 2 year old vs. 3 or 4 year old first time starters.

Remember, the archives are available online. If you hear a show you like, download it and save it. There are particular guests that I really enjoy, and I always save those. I also like to save the Monday segments when J.J. and Steve go over the weekend Stakes with audio replays. Those are nice to have.

Baily/Solis and Smarty Jones
 

I just listened to podcast and i find the 2004 Belmont fascinating, mainly because it is one of the only times i remember that horse racing and some of the things that go on during the race got mainstream coverage on sports talk radio in the aftermath. I have always thought that Stewart Elliot cost Smarty Jones the Triple Crown by always reacting to the new challenger in the race. To me, it seemed that Bailey, Solis, and the other jockeys didnt respect Stewart Elliot's ability, and I think in this race they were proven right by Elliots' actions. But i have always wondered about the motive behind Bailey and others. They knew by costing Smarty Jones the race they would also cost themselves the race. Did they do this because they didn't want Elliot in particular to win the triple crown? Did they not think Smarty Jones was a deserving Triple Crown Winner? Did they not want any mid level jockey coming up and winning the triple crown. Or is at simple, as they wanted to be the one to win the triple crown? Just some thoughts, i still find the race fascinating

I agree with you that Elliot cost Smarty Jones that race, also think Bailey and the others were riding more to ensure a loss by Smarty than a win on their horses. I forget offhand who Bailey rode that day, but if I was the owner of that horse, I would have been pissed off as he gave the horse no shot to win.

I believe Baily was riding Eddington in the Belmont.

I just heard the end of the show, and some of my questions were answered... I agree with Steve, Bailey didnt want Elliot winning, Not 100% sure why. I dont remember exactly what his side of the story was. But i still think Elliot should of let them go, he did not need the lead

Good call, I believe you are right. The owners could not have been happy with that ride. Agree with you that Bailey did not want Elliot winning. I remember hearing Bailey speak about the race on the Mike and the Mad Dog sports show in New York, forget exactly what he said about it, but it was bullshit.
