Bob Baffert is tweeting that he loves his first-time-starter at Santa Anita today in race #3.

This horse shared the bullet of session #3 of the OBS April Sale last year. Initially a $17,000 October yearling ... this horse sold for a session best $450,000 just six months later.

Ideally, someone like Amy Tarrant would buy it, train it, try to dull its speed in the morning, and it would get well under the radar at 15/1 or so at Monmouth Park on debut.

Instead, naturally... Baffert gets it, and tweets about it on a day when he's running 3 in the Santa Anita Derby. Probably will be odds-on now.

National Turfs workout report is all over him too.. Giving his last breeze an A-. Definitely will be under the 8/5 ml..

Very visual impressive win. We will see how good that time looks as the card progresses.

On paper that was a soft MSW. That's not to say Bob doesn't have another monster.

The Baffert debuter will have run a speed figure just 1 point lower than what Jimmy Creed will get for winning the Grade 2 Portero Grande today.

Jimmy Creed won the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes last time out. In terms of Beyers, he ran a 105. The second place finisher to Jimmy Creed today ran a 104 last time out.

This was simply a beautiful all around performance for the Baffert debuter Declassify. He laid down serious fractions and drew off in final time on par with elite older male sprinters on this same card.

Taken out of his running style. He is clearly not a stalk and pounce horse.

Goldencents is just a damn good horse.

Anyone who thinks otherwise should bother watching the replay of the Delta Jackpot.

http://www1.drf.com/displayVideo.do?...=D&country=USA

He carves out real fractions on the lead... pay attention to Mylute (the eventual 2nd place finisher of the Louisiana Derby) ... Mylute was a long way dead last, and he makes an Arazi look move on the far turn, and Goldencents gets away from him in the stretch.

Mylute might be a hanger, he had Revolutionary all but put away in the Louisiana Derby, but let him off of the hook in deep stretch. But Goldencents hung up another good horse in the stretch today.

It'smyluckyday, a big speed figure horse, was nowhere with a clear wide trip in that Delta Jackpot, and he came back and won two stakes at Gulfstream before finishing 2nd as the 8/5 favorite in the Florida Derby last week.

In terms of style and ability ... Goldencents looks a whole lot like I'll Have Another going into the Derby last year. The only difference, I'll Have Another proved he could be taken back and fire in Louisville when he was forced into those tactics for the first time.

The pace dynamics are a lot different in this Derby, there's no Trinniberg and Bodemiester ... but there's usually one horse every year who responds very favorably to the change in tactics, while a lot of others completely bomb.

Goldencents, like I'll Have Another last year, goes into the Derby with a wildcard look.

Agreed. Very Confident and in this case took Gomez to school.

But isn't that why they changed riders? You think dueling up front was the way to go again?

I was just thinking about what the pace will be like this year with the new point system keeping out the sprinters and there looking to be no Bodemeister-like horse winning the major point races. One would think the tactic changer trying to win this year would be one going wire to wire, no?

Nope...I think the new tactics were worth a shot. I just don't think he's good enough period. But I do think he is probably at his best, wherever that ranks, when he's out front.

Disagree. He rated kindly. Ranged up, looked like a winner and hung badly.
