Nice fields in all.. Obviously a lot negativity hanging over the head of Calder/CDI, but you can count on Mike Antifantis to make this is day go. A total of 9 out-of-towners enter with the Asmussen barn contributing nicely wikth Regally Ready, Mico Margarita, Speedinthruthecity & Justin Phillip. Others are Guadalupe High (Werner), Holiday Soiree (McCauley), Judy the Beauty (Ward), Sweet Cassiopeia (Connelly), Reenesgotzip (P. Miller). Ann of the Dance (Moving Catalano to Wolfson permanently maybe?)..

Should be a fun afternoon.

You're right, they are all nice fields. Fun day indeed.

I'd imagine the brilliant architect of this and so many other exciting days, Mr. Umphrey, would be pleased. :)

It is a shame that Marty Wolfson couldn't find a few more horses to run in these spots. Talk about emptying the barn...

over a million dollars in purses and i've never seen such a lack of A-list riders in my life. Even Chuck Town attracts a name or two, says a lot about caler....

BT..

It doesn't say anything about Calder. It's a huge Saturday of racing nationwide and 'name' riders that are visiting -- Gomez, Lezcano, Saez, Santana, plus Karamouche, Willie Martinez and Jeff Sanchez -- are there for regular or familiar mounts. The rest of the horses have their regular S. FL jocks. Jason Biedes poached some mounts for Lezcano, but who among 'A' list jocks should come down for horses they have never ridden when they have rides in the United Nations, Hollywood Gold Cup, Royal Heroine, Suburban, Dwyer, etc.?

isn't Gomez going through his "personal issues" out there in the west?
what i'm saying steve, is i'm wondering how/why bigger riders even below the cusp riders at bigger circuits aren't taking advantage of these purses by locking down mounts.
didn't think i would see the day where the likes of arnoldo bocachica and luca panici would have back to back mounts in grade 1 events

I hear you about the Bocachicas, Nunezes, Gallardos and Panicis, but they're giving away $1,000,000 in NY and NJ too Saturday. At Belmont, the Suburban is worth $350k, Dwyer $200k and then the rest of the card another $500k. At Monmouth, the United Nations is worth $500k, the Salvator Mile $150k and the rest of the card maybe $300k. Who among Rosario, Castellano, Velazquez, Prado, Bravo, Lopez, Trujillo should abandon their mounts to ride in Summit on horses they've likely never ridden? And if you look closely at the PP's, you'll see that Saez and Lezcano have glommed a number of rides. I also wouldn't think the trainers would want to penalize their everyday jocks by taking away their chance at stakes paydays. When Summit got more horses shipping in for the day, you would get the regular big names to come and ride them. And Santana, Saez and Lezcano are doing that Saturday. Plus the others like Willie that are in for one or two rides.

Reneesgotzip is not running in the Rooney.

Its a great card at Calder. Both main 6f drew large and competitive fields
Betting wise it looks great.

Meanwhile We have a 4 horse field in the Swaps, 5 horse field in the Hollywood Gold Cup and a 5 horse field in the Suburban. Rout races are dying a slow death.

Summit of SPeed INvaders

Steve,
Im down here in South Florida excited about heading to Calder for Summit of Speed. I seem to recall that a bunch of the low priced invaders have not run well here in the past probably due to the heat and humidity.

Can you ask Mike W on Friday if he recalls this, or has any stats?

Thanks,
Bill

Enjoy this Summit of Speed. You may never see another (at CRC at least).

Merlinsky 07-06-2013 04:25 PM

Huh, didn't realize the Smile Sprint winner Bahamian Squall is fellow competitor Apriority's half-brother. Both are out of Midway Squall.

Kasept 07-06-2013 09:31 PM

Highlight of the day was Smile by far with heartening Jackson Bend effort and courageous try by Trinniberg. Both sets of connections a tad disappointed but relieved to have their stars back towards their good form.

blackthroatedwind 07-06-2013 10:08 PM

Time to get a top jockey for Trinniberg.

She would have crushed that field.

Holy cow no kidding. I think Willie's plan was to just confuse the horse as much as possible this race.

Watch it again. Zayas and Artefacto made it impossible for Martinez and Trinniberg and Willie did great to find his way into the placement. Don't want to take away from Bahamian Squall's nice effort, but had Swagger Jack not SCR'd, Artefacto doesn't draw in and Trinniberg is that much more likely a winner without the #13 there. And another scenario has Jackson Bend the winner if he changes leads on cue. But that's sprint racing. A stumble at the start, a check up along the way or any other hiccup changes the flow and outcome.

Again, the upside for the Parhboos and Fred Brei/Stan Gold is that they know their horses are back. Both were a little disappointed because they thought they could have won, but considering the questions hanging over the heads of both horses, were satisfied with the results. Will mention that Gold was mystified by Fort Loudon's non-effort. Was having him scoped as we left Calder but he thought it will be just a cross out race. Trinniberg and Jackson Bend both Saratoga bound to add to the Vanderbilt/Forego scene.
