Dreaming of Julia was terrible today.

She was making very hard work of just holding her position in the middle stages of the race.

The bridgejumpers had to be terrified just prior to the 3/8ths pole.

As dull and empty as she looked, I'm surprised she was able to plug her way along in the stretch into a 2nd place finish.

Who would be outraged? Gamblers or the connections of the horses? Personally I love betting against these types. I pressed the winner and backed up with the 5 in all multis. I did alright. DOJ has 1 huge race, nothing else that she has done is better than Close Hatches.

I was surprised/impressed that Belmont didn't cancel show betting like most tracks would have done in a 5-horse race with such a heavy fav. Are they prohibited from canceling by the regs?

Naturally

Most tracks do not cancel show wagering in 5 horse fields, especially the larger tracks.

When there is one very dominating heavy favorite, even the larger tracks will sometimes cancel show wagering. Here are a couple I picked out of the Show Parlay thread in Contests:

2010 Apple Blossom (Oaklawn), Zenyatta

2010 Vanity (Hollywood), Zenyatta. (and that was a 6-horse race!).

Sometimes, yes, but it is very rare.

Agreed, but a 5-horse race with a dominating fav is somewhat rare to start with.

Oaklawn also canceled show betting in Rachel Alexandra's 2009 Fantasy Stakes win. It didn't save them from a minus pool, however. They still had to cough up a pretty hefty minus pool payout ($190K) when Rachel accounted for 95.6% of the Place pool. That was when Oaklawn still had $2.20 min payouts, and possibly the reason they switched to $2.10 in 2010.
