Wow a 1:47 clocking and only a 98 Beyer at Belmont. Guess Big Sandy was quite tight.

It was a fast track.....and quite speed favoring.

The biggest loser, in a lot of ways, in the Peter Pan was Imperial Council who ultimately just isn't that good. I, moronically, actually liked him for the Derby a month and a half ago. The best thing they could do now is turn him back for the Woody Stephens and see if he's a better horse sprinting.

I agree Andy. I liked him off of that Gotham quite a bit. But he simply hasn't improved and looks more like a GII placing type horse than a G1 contender anytime soon.

Rail Trip ran his career top Beyer this weekend - and KG still called him a bunch of bad names anyway.

The Lone Star Derby winner should get a number faster than the Peter Pan winner. I steadfastly maintain that he ran at least as good - if not better than Mine That Bird in their Sunland encounter.

Yeah, maybe I got caught up in his breeding somewhat...thinking he would improve with more distance. However, running as good as he did for in his debut at 2 and 3. He may be best at a 7-8 furlong one turn.

Hey, it wasn't a stakes race or anything, but does anyone know have a way of knowing what Beyer Wildeydsouthernboy got on Saturday at AP?

LS Derby got a 101.

For what it's worth I think Mine That Bird ran decidedly better in the Sunland Derby than Mythical Power did.

I obviously disagree.

The strongest part of the pace was the sizzling 22.07 first quarter - of which Mythical Power was several length in front of Mine That Bird after - and was just as wide and actually under restraint going into the 1st turn.

He got shuffled into an education when MTB started moving past him down the backstretch - and Kelly Leak was following MTB's move.

To me, MP showed he had the most raw speed of any horse in that race - he got his education and a dirty face - and he finished up best of all in a collapsing race.

If you pretend that Kelly Leak wasn't in the race ... yeah ... Mine That Bird's race probably rates better than MP's .. but KL basically followed him - hooked widest - and put MTB away with ease on the turn. All 3 of them ran well .. but MTB was only 3rd best .. and perhaps arguably ran as well as MP..but that's a bit of a stretch.

In my opinion, the running that Mine That Bird did in the middle two quarters of the race, to go from a mid-pack position to the lead around the far turn through solid fractions was the most impressive of any, save the winner.

Don't get me wrong, MTB having a bad trip there has nothing to do with him deserving a look in the Derby, he's just as impossible to me now as he was then.

However, Mythical Power waited patiently on the inside as this premature move was occurring and he left the rail only at the top of the stretch and subsequently needed nearly the whole stretch to get past MTB.

For what it's worth Valid Stripes, who was last by a distance at Sunland, came back to win the Texas Stallion Series stake on the LS Derby undercard and earned a Beyer of 83.

I really don't know who ran better in the Sunland Derby.

Mythical Power had better tactical speed - he naturally secured forward position. - And yes, it was a pretty tough 1st quarter...

The thing that really stands out with Mine That Bird is the completely idiotic ride he received after the 1st quarter. While Mythical Power got to settle, MTB's jockey literally appeared to have misjudged the finish line by about 5 furlongs!:zz: Obviously that wasn't the case, but it was a standout horrible ride.

When Mythical Power was asked for his run, he was by that point 100% expected to pass MTB. If he didn't, it would be seen as a huge negative for Mythical Power.

Mythical Power might be a better horse than Mine That Bird. I couldn't tell who ran better. MP got a better trip and should have won, and he did. MTB got a horrible trip and showed some toughness.
Neither horse was looking like a grade 1 horse.
