What race is Pappacap pointing for? Working a hole in the wind at the Casse private training center.
Never mind Baffert, it won't be the Derby unless that barn shoehorns one in, even if the only decent race was over 6 months ago. Plus would he be the only representative from that great renewal of the BC Juvenile? |

It has produced 2yo champions Roving Boy, Timber Country, Lookin at Lucky and Nyquist, so it's association with the Eclipse Awards is well established. Furthermore, in my opinion other winners of the race, namely Best Pal, Officer, Dixie Union, and Roman Ruler could have easily been Eclipse champions were it not for racing greats like Wilko, Declan's Moon, and Anees being in the same crops. The race has also been productive in the near term. 2021runner-up Finneus just placed in the Turf Paradise Derby and the 2020 winner Weston is entered for a $18k claiming tag next week at Santa Anita. Plus he's the best named horse outta this 3yo crop. |
Late TC nominee BYE BYE BOBBY (Fincher) will try to augment 20 points earned in Sunland Derby placement in the Lexington..
|
Also from the late nominee list, SUMMER IS TOMORROW (Seemar) to take up a slot in the Derby gate off 40 points earned in qualifying race held abroad over the weekend.

Tough decision ahead for Ken McPeek...
Does he prep for the Derby Stakes in the Kentucky Derby or the 2000 Guineas? I would go with the latter. If he doesn't then the horse has no shot at the English Triple Crown... |
Pretty tough not to go to the Kentucky Derby after that effort today.
|
Who called the Jeff Ruby Steaks on the NBC telecast?
Loved his style. I think his approach is basically: 1) Call the correct horse on the lead and 2) never let on that you have no idea who the other horses are or what position they are in... He even winged it on the name of the race right before the start. Pretty sure he called it the Jeffery Stakes. |

Going against the grain since the horse already proved himself over a European-style turf course at Kentucky Downs but has gotten brow beat in his only 2 dirt starts... |
My bad. I guess he won an off-the-turf at Ellis Park.
Guess they'll do a rain dance. The good news is they don't need to worry about a lead pony for the time being. |

Remsen
Looks like the Remsen has returned to its rightful place of prominence in the Kentucky Derby picture. The 2 hosses that ran so well today were 1-2 in that race which is a true harbinger of a 2 year old to get 10 furlongs the first Saturday in May.

The 20 horses won't remain the same, but if they did, they'd be trained by 15 different horsemen. Asmussen, Brown, McPeek, Cox Yakteen with 2 each. Would expect that Classic Causeway and Forbidden Kingdom demure which get Charge It and Tawny Port into the field giving Pletcher 2 and Cox 3. Another coming out would give O'Neill a 2nd starter in Happy Jack.
UPDATE (4/10): Classic Causeway, Forbidden Kingdom out; Charge It, Tawny Port in.. Epicenter, Morello (Asmussen) Zandon, Early Voting (C. Brown) Tiz the Bomb, Smile Happy (McPeek) Cyberknife, Zozos, Tawny Port (Cox) Taiba, Messier (Yakteen) Mo Donegal, Charge It, (Pletcher) ~ Pioneer of Medina Slow Down Andy (O'Neill) ~ Happy Jack White Abarrio (Joseph) Crown Pride-JPN (Shintani) Simplification (Sano) Classic Causeway (Lynch) Barber Road (J. Ortiz) Un Ojo (Courville) Summer Is Tomorrow (Seemar) |
Also from the notebook..

As anticipated, Classic Causeway bypassing Derby. CHARGE IT moves into field..
