Jim Dunleavy, Laurel-DRF LIVE: Leatherbury plans to scratch Ben's Cat from De Francis Dash

As expected, King Leatherbury has decided to scratch Ben’s Cat from the $350,000 De Francis Dash at Laurel Park on Saturday and instead point to the $200,000 Fabulous Strike Stakes at Penn National on Nov. 26.

Ben’s Cat has won the six-furlong Fabulous Strike the past two years.

“I haven’t scratched yet but I’m going to,” Leatherbury said just after noon on Friday. “I’m going to wait in case some of the favorites drop out, but that is very unlikely.”

Leatherbury is the owner-trainer-breeder of Ben’s Cat, a winner of 27 of 44 starts and more than $2.2 million.

Understandable, but disappointing.

And I have no idea how La Verdad or Happy My Way can actually win this race, assuming both enter.

La Verdad to scratch from De Francis, leaving field of eight

According to Daily Racing Form correspondent David Grening, Linda Rice has decided to scratch La Verdad from the $350,000 Frank J. De Francis Dash on Saturday at Laurel Park.

Earlier on Friday, trainer King Leatherbury said that he planned to scratch Ben's Cat from the De Francis and instead point to the $200,000 Fabulous Strike at Penn National on Nov. 26.

The defections of La Verdad and Ben's Cat would leave a field of eight in the De Francis.

From the rail out, the field would be Happy My Way, Heaven's Runway, Favorite Tale, Zee Bros, Dads Cap, Bern Identity, Mico Margarita, and Smash and Grab.

La Verdad would have been serious speed presence in the race but a fast pace is still expected from Happy My Way, Favorite Tale, Zee Bros, and Bern Identity.

Minimum bets at Laurel??

Seems the minimum bet for Trifectas and Supers at Laurel is $1. At least it was today on XpressBet. I'm really bumming because I was soooo looking forward to betting Laurel tomorrow :( I even spent hours handicapping before the rude shock. (Funny thing is that XpressBet says the minimum bets are 50 cents and 20 cents, however, when you bet those amounts, they are not accepted). Suppose I'll concentrate on Churchill and Aqueduct for tomorrow.

Bon Chance everyone!! :)

While the minimum increment might be 50-cents, sometimes there is a minimum cost to the wager. Some tracks will allow a 50-cent bet, others will require at least $1 to be played. But I just checked LRL and it allows 50-cents straight.

It can be difficult to find a little thing like that sometimes. I couldn't find it either on the Laurel website. I don't think that daily racing form or equibase results indicate the payoff for 50 cent tris at Laurel, either. I guess the easy way to do it, when in doubt about whether a track takes the 50 cent wager or not, is to look at the results for the track on your Xpressbet account and you can see whether the 50 cent results are there. In the case of Laurel, they are. Also, the minimum for supers is a dime.

Thanks so much for the input Cal and Travis. I called Laurel Park and they informed me that they do in fact take minimum bets of 10 cents and 50 cents at the track, however, XpressBet (and others online) may not. I tried w/XpressBet and they do not. No worries. Will play other tracks :) Getting excited for Aqueduct and Churchill this afternoon. WOOT!
