Materiality is my pick.

Better post position than Upstart and a proven 9 furlong winner.

Itsaknockout

In the Fountain of Youth, he got the victory by a DQ. Can he win a clean fight in the G1 Florida Derby Saturday?

Steve, not to be picky, but you have the 5th and 6th races in the initial post listed with the same horses. I was wondering why all turf horses were listed in the Skip Away.

at long last photo call returns!

That was a fantastic race between two terrific 3YO colts. Oh and It'saknockout totally would've beaten Upstart in the FOY without that "interference."

I fail to see how the difference between the "foul" that Upstart made against It'saknockout was any different than Materiality coming in against Upstart in the stretch today. Yet not only did the GP clowns not look at that incident, they made the race official before Jose Ortiz could put in his claim of foul. What a joke.

Neither of them should've been DQ's, but yeah, that story just further confirms what buffoons the Gulfstream stewards are. I'm glad that meet is over for all intents and purposes.

I completely agree Joey. It is all about consistency. For them to DQ Upstart last time and refuse to even look at the stretch run today, let alone allow time for Ortiz to put in a claim of foul, is a croc of **** as far as I am concerned. They have fools for stewards there.

TheSpyder 03-28-2015 07:59 PM

Birdatthewire would of been my "worst trip watch next time" tag the way he was strangled, but still managed to easily beat the field going wide most of the way and breaking at 40 degrees from center.

That is some kind of horse.

GRENING: Jose Ortiz wanted to claim foul

Jose Ortiz the rider of Florida Derby runner-up UPSTART wanted to claim foul against John Velazquez and MATERIALITY for the latter coming over into his path in mid-stretch. But the stewards made the race official before Ortiz could talk to the stewards.

Ortiz said he told the head outrider he wanted to put a hold on the race. But when Ortiz went to pick up the phone to talk to the stewards, Larry Collmus announced the race was official.

"By the eighth pole, when Johnny [Velazquez] hit him left-handed, he came in a little bit," Ortiz said. "We were so close when he hit him his horse drifted out a little bit so I got to call foul. I did it, I told the outrider, but when I got to the phone the race was official."

According to Gulfstream management - president Tim Ritvo and vice president/general manager P J Campo _ ,Ortiz did not notify the outrider until he was on the way back to be unsaddled. The outrider had already told the stewards "all clear."

The stewards told management that they reviewed the break and the stretch and declared the race official.

Rick Violette, the trainer of Upstart, didn't act as though his horse had been interfered with to the point there should have been a disqualification, but he felt that any objection should at least be heard.

Violette felt post 9 compromised his horse more than anything though he admitted "we got beat by a good horse."

Ironically, Upstart had finished first in the Fountain of Youth only to be disqualified for interference and he was placed second behind the Todd Pletcher-trained Itsaknockout.

Materiality, the winner of the Florida Derby, is trained by Pletcher.
