Attempt to pick 1,000 straight horses who fail to win

I will take at least five horses a day. Some days 40 or 50. Here goes with my personal attempt to pick 1,000 who can't win.

Del Mar Race #4: Emerald Island

Del Mar Race #5: Searfavoritesecret

Presque Isle Downs Race #6: J's Wild Bud

Hoosier Race #5: Absolutely Good

Hoosier Race #6: Perpetuate

herkhorse 08-08-2012 06:17 PM

I hope PG starts posting on this thread.

fantini33 08-08-2012 07:11 PM

I'm in. I will attempt to pick a non winner of every Saratoga race between now and when the meet ends. The first couple weeks have been easy...trust me.

MISTERGEE 08-08-2012 08:29 PM

i bet on the side that you will no doubt be able to do it

They finished...

9th beaten 34.5 lengths, 6th beaten 12.25 lengths, 7th beaten 20 lengths, 8th beaten 15.5 lengths, and 9th beaten 16.5 lengths.

Five down, only 995 more to go.

pmacdaddy 08-08-2012 10:34 PM

Out of curiosity, what were the approx. post time odds on most?

They were all between 58/1 (lowest) and 85/1 (highest)

I'm only taking horses which I believe have a 0.00% chance of winning. On the weekends, there's hundreds of them ... I choose a minimum of five per day though, because of Tuesday cards when only a few tracks run.

Calzone Lord 08-08-2012 11:44 PM

Bums for Thursday:

Canterbury Race #2: Nix Krews

Canterbury Race #7: Jayembro

Canterbury Race #8: Mocha Polka

Charles Town Race #3: Our Longfellow

Charles Town Race #5: Mr. Catalpa

Charles Town Race #5: Angry Lil Stinkbug

Charles Town Race #7: Caressing Tide

Evangeline Race #6: Flyin Curley

Hoosier Race #1: Styln Bonnie

Prarie Meadows Race #8: Trick Kitty

ranger5830 08-09-2012 10:45 AM

As a companion to this thread, I would like to keep track of how much actual money is lost betting in these horses over the course of the challenge. I didn't note the exact amount yesterday, but I know it was well over $5,000, so we'll start with that amount. So through day one:

# of horses: 5
# of wins: 0
total amount lost: $5,000
ROI: $0.00

If for some reason, Doug, you don't want me to do this I will not, but I thought it would be fun to see how much money people have to throw away.

Also, for those following along, Trick Kitty is actually in the 9th at Prairie.

None of them have yet to finish within 12 length of the winner.

ranger5830 08-10-2012 01:09 AM

# of horses: 14
# of wins: 0
total amount lost: $6,715
ROI: $0.00

21 down...only 979 more to go.

pmacdaddy 08-10-2012 11:02 PM

Lincoln Penny sure has been moving in the wrong direction since leaving the Weaver barn...

Had a nice score at Belmont with him when he broke his maiden.

ranger5830 08-11-2012 02:05 AM

So today yielded another $1,737 lost on these nags which bumps the total to a healthy $8,452.

4 Scratches -- and 11 horses who ran and got buried. So far none of the 32 horses have finished in the top 4.

32 down, only 968 more to go.

ranger5830 08-12-2012 02:42 AM

Today was a good day to part the fools from their money, as the picks had a total of $4,581 bet to win, bringing the total lost so far to $13,033.

I did not have access to the individual pools at Parx so based on the result chart I estimated Go Marching In had $250 wagered on him.

All 8 of them got crushed ... most finishing dead last.

Two of them were in the mid 20-to-1 odds range ... in one race, A John Shireffs trained runner won at 46/1 at Del Mar while one of my bums of the day faded to an 8th place finish at 27/1.

40 down, only 960 more to go.

Calzone Lord 08-12-2012 11:12 PM

Bums for Monday:

Delaware Race #1: Is That Blue

Fort Erie Race #4: Malibu Slew

Fort Erie Race #8: Toddling Fox

Finger Lakes Race #2: B J's A Honey

Finger Lakes Race #7: Bistro Soiree

Parx Race #10: Great Thor

Saratoga Race #1: Freedom Writer

Suffolk Race #2: One Chin Again and Agave Ridge

ranger5830 08-13-2012 01:26 AM

Thanks to the big money at Saratoga and Del Mar, the bums raked in a stunning $21,111 today, pushing the total to a whopping $34,144. I expect that one day total will be hard to beat going forward.

Five of them ran -- and they all finished up the track.

45 down, only 955 more to go.

ranger5830 08-13-2012 06:49 PM

Today's bums lost a relatively small $1,070 (not that I wouldn't mind an extra $1,070 for nothing) bringing the total wasted so far up to $35,214.

I have to say that the ability to even pick 45 horses in a row and not have any even make the superfecta is pretty impressive.

XIIPointStables 08-13-2012 08:32 PM

I agree. Keep up the good work.

Doug, I know you had that solid day a few years ago in the contest out west. Santa Anita when it was still poly, maybe? I think you won 8 of 9 races that day, or something of the sort. Have you ever picked 10 winners in a row?

As a public handicapper...

My 'Best Bet' in the newspaper once won 12 times in a row.

The most consecutive 'top pick' winners I've had in the newspaper is 7 (and it was over 2 days. I had top pick winners in the late double, and the next night the first five races)

As a bettor -- I'm primarily an exotic bettor...and I look for value.

I will certainly make win bets in situations where I think I'm getting great value (even on low-odds horses in the rare occasions I find them to be a great value) -- but I wouldn't have any idea what the longest streak of win bets I cashed is. Not something I think about because win bets are somewhat few and far between for me.

Picking 10 in a row is F'ing hard. As soon as I either succeed or fail at this task, I will start a thread in here trying to pick one winner a day for 10 days and see if I can do it.

I know you talk a lot about vertical wagers, but never hear you speak much about horizontals?

Calzone Lord 08-14-2012 03:40 PM

The only real draw back to my approach -- is that I have probable bet backs spread out at tracks all over the entire country...and it's a rare thing that there are two of them in the same p3 or p4 sequence.

This forces me to play more verticals and less horizontals. I'm also looking at some cheaper tracks where, even offshore, you can't really do anything with multi-win bets.

I virtually never use the 'all' button in any of my wagers. It's wasteful -- and if your goal is a long term profit -- you're hurting yourself.

You'll miss out on some real nice scores and have some VERY frustrating outcomes from time to time -- and it's probably not the best thing for my mental health ... but overall, when it comes to which horses I use with my key horse, you're going to do better if you try to be more precise and aggressive -- instead of fishing and wasteful. Doesn't matter if its a multi-race or single-race bet.

Six of them ran today. The streak of no 4th place finishes was broken. Amazingly, one of the horses at Suffolk went off at 11-to-1 odds. Pretty short price for a horse with an estimated 0.00% chance of winning.

A horse won the 1st race at Suffolk today at odds of 65/1.

http://www1.drf.com/drfPDFChartRaces...=20120814&RN=1

That horse was 4th fastest in the race, one point away from being tied for 3rd fastest, had made the early lead at this class level last time out, and had better late pace numbers than the two favorites, who were both speedball quitters. If something happened to the two favorites, the horse was as competitive as anyone left.

Anyway, 51 down, only 949 more to go.

ranger5830 08-15-2012 01:37 AM

Thanks largely to the aforementioned 11-1 shot, today's bums lost a cool $3,844 bringing the grand total up to $39,058.

Today was a good day to go to the track, as the nags were responsible for a big $14,436 bringing the total amount of futile wagers to $53,494. At this rate it's not impossible that over $1 million will be lost during this challenge.
