For Saturday, I want to try one of the special wagers - the All Dirt Pick 4 which covers Races 5, 7, 9 and 11. I think it would be listed in the results page as part of Race 11.

Race 5: $1 All Dirt Pick 4: 1, 7 / 4,5,9 / 2,3,6,8,12 / 2,6,7, 8,9 ($150)

Good luck to all and thank you to Real Quiet for scoring.

Real Quiet 11-03-2023 12:19 PM

Race 3 $38 ex key 3 w 5-9 ($76)

Since I don't know Euro's Joly's All Dirt Pk 4 is looking good
Races 5,7,9,11 $1 Pick 4 1 w 3-4-5-6 w 2-3-8-9 w 1-4-9 ($48)

Race 9 $31 Win # 9 The Senor Buscador ($31)

cruzan200246 11-03-2023 12:51 PM

R7. 8 Randomized $50.00 Place
R10. 9 Roses For Debra $50.00 Win
R11. 4 Hoist The Gold $50.00 Win

JolyB 11-03-2023 01:33 PM

RQ, that's exactly why I took a shot at the all dirt pick 4. The more I looked at the turf races, the more befuddled I got. At least with the dirt races, I have a better frame of reference and don't have to compare the turf form at Deauville and Royal Ascot. Of course, in the Classic there is still the need to assess the quality of the Japanese horses, and I happen to like the chances of Ushba Tesoro a lot.

Great Minds? I was thinking exactly the same thing as you guys. My stab at it, if I decide to play it would be $60 for 50 cents or $120 for a buck. Can't quite pull the trigger though as my luck with the horizontals is pretty bad.:(

It's not the water I'm afraid of. It's what might be in the water. After I saw Jaws, I cannot look at the wet stuff in the same way ever again.:D Good story though. Peter Benchley wove quite a tale. Sort of a poor man's Moby Dick which I think he borrowed from which was brilliant and then he threw in the story of the USS Indianapolis which was another bit of brilliance.

After reading about the fate of those who were in the ocean after the sinking of the Indianapolis, I would never want to swim in the Pacific Ocean again. But I digress.

In the ROI portion you may wager on any or all of the races.

Alli. Thank you for joining in the ROI contest.

Ruffians wager in race 12 is good. She notified me before any of the races started.

Oh right, I forgot that.

What an enjoyable two days of racing, with some great performances. I thought that the TV coverage was very good, other than the network decision to treat the final two races as stepchildren and relegate them to the Fan Duel channel.

I wanted to set down a couple of thoughts while they are still fresh in my mind, before turning the page and moving on.
(1) I managed to hit the all Dirt Pick 4 and still lost money in the process. That's what happens when you think that the final two legs (Classic and Sprint) will be contentious and the favorite wins each one. Never played one of the "gimmick" pick 4's before and didn't know what to expect.
(2) I made the mistake to upgrading the chances of a number of hyped California horses and wasted a lot of money/picks in the process. I erroneously thought that there might be a slight "home court advantage" for the Cali group, and that just didn't work out. Baffert horses in particular and Cali horses in general just didn't show much. That especially let me go 5 deep in the Sprint, when Speed Boat Beach, Dr. Schivel and The Chosen Vron didn't do much running. Adare Manor, Arabian Knight and Prince of Monaco also were disappointments and bankroll busters.
(3) Like many others, I got caught up in the hype surrounding the top rated runners from Japan. I leaned too heavily on both Songline and Ushbe Tesoro and paid the price. On the other hand, in the Classic I had completely ignored Derma Sotogake, thinking that the layoff between the Ky Derby and the BC Classic was not the ideal way to prepare for a $6 million race. Yet he ran a very strong race, sort of what I expected Ushbe to do.
(4) If there was any doubt about it (and there probably shouldn't have been), let me go on record to say that Ryan Moore and William Buick can flat out ride the turf. Moore's decisions on Auguste Rodin were simply flawless and made the difference in the outcome.
(5) Nobals ran a very nice race in the Turf Sprint and his owners should be proud of him. As a gelding we will probably see him again next year. I wondered once more how in the world his name application got through the Jockey Club's filters. He is too good a horse to deserve such an atrocious name.

I'm handicapped out and probably need some time away, perhaps to deal with the piles of leaves that have accumulated. That might be good mental therapy for me for the next couple of weeks.

JolyB 11-05-2023 09:29 AM

In my previous post I was whining about hitting the all Dirt pick 4 and losing money in the process. Having given some thought to this, I realize that I have no one but myself to blame. Like so many horseplayers, there was nothing wrong with my handicapping- but my poor money management caused the loss.

While the all Dirt pick 4 was a gimmicky type of bet that you only find at the BC, it was still a multi-race bet and should have been attacked as such. In making my bet, I went 2x3x5x5. In the final two legs, my error was to play at equal strength (the $1 base bet) both horses that I liked a lot and horses that I thought had a realistic chance to win if my top horses didn't fire. That caused me to create a single ticket that was too expensive if my preferred horses won, which they did.

In hindsight, I should have tried to rank the horses in the final two legs based on how I viewed their merits. Then, I should have played not a single $1 ticket, but several different tickets. A possibility would have been a $2 ticket using my top picks, a $1 that used the top picks in three of the legs and my other possibles in the other leg, and a $0.50 ticket that used the other possibles in both of the final two legs. (I think that in the first two legs, I mostly liked the picks almost equally so didn't need to differentiate - it just happens that the favorite won each, but the others were solid also). I think that this would have allowed me to remain within the ROI budget but have a wager that more closely reflected how I felt the races would turn out. (I won't bore you by listing exactly what the wagers would look like, but I hope you get the idea).

It's easy to be a Sunday morning quarterback, but the simple fact was that I didn't like Saudi Crown as much as I liked White Abarrio or Ushba, and yet my wager on him was equal. That's just not a good way to use one's money.

I've said before that I love our ROI contest because it allows us to try various types of wagers and learn about this fascinating game that we play.

" Nobals is too good a horse to deserve such an atrocious name."

I watched the post position draw and when they came to him, it was all those guys doing the draw could do to keep from busting out laughing. Not sure why I watched it. Usually as interesting as watching paint dry, but Nick Luck did go out into the audience and talk to Pletcher and Mott and Mike Smith and one or two others which made it slightly more interesting.

"I'm handicapped out and probably need some time away, perhaps to deal with the piles of leaves that have accumulated. That might be good mental therapy for me for the next couple of weeks.[/quote]"

I should probably feel that way as handicapping usually exhausts me because I make voluminous notes and tear them up and do them over and over some more, but no, I usually try to figure out what I did wrong or right and come up with some lame brained strategy to correct things. Now I am anxious to try that strategy out, but that will have to wait awhile until we resume play. By that time, I likely will have forgotten what it was.

I likely might have done better by choosing some easier races, but the Classic is such a challenge, I often can't resist. Must admit, I was not on the White Abarrio train, but used him anyway a little to no avail as Derma Sotogake put an end to that.

Certainly agree that Cody's Wish was an emotional high point. I feel wonderful for Cody and his family, knowing that the story will continue as the horse enters the breeding shed. I wonder what some of his offspring will be named?

Help me out please. I thought Tamara, who didn't fire in the Juvie Fillies, was the daughter of Bolt d'Oro and Beholder. Was there another that I missed?
