Discreet and the Cigar

What are you expecting today? Its the last race I'm looking forward to this year, and said as much after the Cup.

My feeling is Discreet is currently the best dirt horse in training in the world as strange as that sounds to some. I'm hoping he proves it today with a phenomenal performance. If not, I'll be wrong.

It doesn't matter what he does. We'll get the same people whining about who he didn't beat whether he wins by one length or twenty.

Joe Joe, it matters to me. It matters to me.

Me too.. I'm just telling you, don't expect it to matter to any of these people.. They'll be too busy complaining about who isn't running to appreciate who is.

I think DC is the fastest horse in the universe now that Bernardini's gone, and even when Bernardini was around I always said I thought DC might be faster anyway.

I'm looking forward to it.

Coach Pants 11-25-2006 10:47 AM

You're either with ateam or against him.

He'll win easy today.

randallscott35 11-25-2006 10:48 AM

Discreet/Badge Exacta. 200 times. Won't pay worth a damn but that's it for me.

If Discreet Cat once agains destroys the field, there won't be much anyone can argue about in terms of is he the fastest horse in the world. It would be hard to argue for another horse. And there is nothing soft about todays competition.

The only remaining thing that I would want to see are some races from him at two turn classic distances.

Same here.

I have always been a fan of this horse. However, I think you bring up an excellent point. I don't know if it's the "never good enough" or "never be happy" syndrome; yet that is very often at play.

If and when that stellar, in depth field faces that next potential superstar horse, and the potential superstar horse prevails -- you might hear about trips, so and so was not 100%, the field wasn't as strong as everyone initially thought, so and so didn't show up or get a hold of the track, etc.

With that in mind -- how does everyone compare Discreet Cat's last two races? The Spa race was what it was. In just looking at the horse, what I saw was that he looked so "casual" and so "at ease" -- Gomez took a hold, took him off, he was relaxed, he sat back, he moved up slow and then it was over. Now, Rick Mettee had said he wasn't cranked up, wasn't 100% tight, fit, or something along those lines.

Now, did people see the same thing last out at Belmont? Mettee said he was 100% fit and cranked up. Did he appear to be "as relaxed", while he was going, as he was at the Spa? Just curious as to what others "saw" and "felt" -- any thoughts?

Thank you.

Eric

Once he beats Invasor outside of Dubai I will gladly humble myself and say he is the best dirt horse in the world.

Invasor surely wasn't the first horse to run a clunker in Dubai (if you can even call it that with the trip he had), and surely won't be the last.

All things considered, I will still say that DC winning today by a head or by 10 lengths will do nothing to sway my opinion that Invasor is the best dirt horse around.

I share the same thoughts as you and Randall do. Discreet Cat wins for fun here today.

hockey2315 11-25-2006 12:40 PM

Discreet Cat wins for fun if he gets to the lead early. . . the speed bias at AQU is absolutely ridiculous today. . . I hope it's gone by the Cigar. . .

hoovesupsideyourhead 11-25-2006 12:49 PM

silver train?..thats not the best...ill go with the cat/humor ext box...

BPLichorowiec 11-25-2006 01:04 PM

I have to agree with you hooves. I like sharp humor to put in a big effort today. Probably can't win, but will be up close early and very gutsy.

hoovesupsideyourhead 11-25-2006 01:08 PM

im sure he will give a good effort...this horse allways gets the rodny dangerfield ....

I hope you ain't talking about Sharp Humor. That horse has more fans on this board than any other active horse.

He is back of the shirt, but all the Barbaro cheerleaders are praying he makes his way to the front so they can say Barbaro beat someone in a race other than the Derby..

hoovesupsideyourhead 11-25-2006 01:38 PM

i see your point...i just like this horse ..trys hard ..hopefully he can get around the winner...

sumitas 11-25-2006 02:50 PM

i gotta give SH a shot here...3rd off layoff.

Simply put, the best horse in the nation. hand ride.

randallscott35 11-25-2006 02:57 PM

132:46. I love this horse.

He made 2 very good older horses who ran very good races look mediocre. He friggin equaled the track record under a damn hand ride. Best horse in the nation no doubts anymore.

ateamstupid 11-25-2006 02:59 PM

Gomez was confident as hell even with Silver Train ahead at the rail and Badge of Silver on the outside coming to him. Still never hit him and didn't ask him until real late.

Gotta see him go two turns in America.. DC vs. Invasor.. I'm drooling.

I couldn't agree more. Have you ever seen a jock that confident after his horse went 1:07 for 6 furlongs. OMG.

sumitas 11-25-2006 03:01 PM

equalled the track record by Easygoer and they turned 3/4 in 1:07 and change...now that was an eye popper.

KirisClown 11-25-2006 03:02 PM

Amazing final time... Prior to today I wasnt totally convinced, but after seeing that, how could anyone not be.

hoovesupsideyourhead 11-25-2006 03:05 PM

super horse.....agreed its a man law...

sumitas 11-25-2006 03:09 PM

at the 3/4 Silver Train actually had the lead by a head...amazing race and Silver Train and BOS came up huge only to lose...SH looked demoralized after he lost the lead. This race will not hurt ST or BOS at stud.

eurobounce 11-25-2006 04:17 PM

Well that was impressive. Discreet is on his way back to Dubai. Who knows if we will ever see him again in the US. Invasor is heading to the Donn so that is good.

The connections of Sharp Humor are plain stupid. This horse is contantly in the wrong spots. They should be ashamed.

No I haven't. He was sitting confident and chilly through truly mindnumbing fractions. When I saw how the initial stages of the race set up I thought that this could be the day he gets caught because BOS was laying back while ST took it to him. That was a great performance.

KirisClown 11-25-2006 04:53 PM

For anyone who missed the race.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_4tZHFYf0U

i agree this was a little steep but if we knock guys for trying then how can we knock the winners by saying they beat nothing?

eurobounce 11-25-2006 05:17 PM

I have never complained about a horse never beatin anyone. I always maintain the position that a horse can only beat who enteres into the race. But the connections of Sharp Humor should know their horse is not a Grade I horse (right now). And this spot they had to have known they had NO shot against the top 3. Sometimes it is worthy to try and sometimes it is plain stupid to try. In this case, it was plain stupid. Maybe I am being harsh, but I think they keep looking back at their close 2nd to Barbaro and feel they have something here--imo, they dont.

King Glorious 11-25-2006 06:09 PM

Does anyone know when they started timing races in the hundredths at Aqueduct? The reason I ask is because I am thinking that when Easy Goer ran his 1:32 2/5, they were still timing in 5ths and they just gave him the fastest possible time when saying that he ran 1:32.40 If they were still timing in 5ths at the time, then EG's actual time was anywhere between 1:32.40 and 1:32.59 which means that with with his 1:32.46, there is an above average chance that Discreet Cat actually broke EG's mark even though he won't get credit for even equalling it. Yes, I know that they are saying that he equalled the record, and by 5ths he did. I was looking at Equibase though and they listed the record at 1:32.40 so DC won't get credited for equalling the record.
