Bailey or Stevens

Who do you like better. I really enjoy listening to Gary. But Gary is not as colorful or says any controversial things. Bailey is opinionated and does not mind criticizing another jocks ride. I will have to say that I like Bailey a little better than Stevens as an announcer.

Silly question. But honestly, I like Gary's personality better. Not that I don't like Bailey's thought process or his personality. But you know me the "BE NICE" police, who else am I going to say. I will say that I do listen a lot to what both of them have to say. Gary is a little more "politically correct".

Doesn't say controversial things, Stevens has named no less than 20 horses the best horse ever, it's rediculous. That being said, I think they are both good and glad to have them broadcasting, what a great gig...

2Hot4TV 06-13-2006 09:28 AM

A little bit of both. Never at the same time. Cant watch one all the time.

Thunder Gulch 06-13-2006 09:28 AM

I always liked Gary, but as discussed in another thread, Bailey really makes me feel like I'm getting some true insight and not just some glossy commentary. It may be that he turns everyone against him in the future to the point that nobody talks to JB, but right now, I prefer him.

miraja2 06-13-2006 09:30 AM

I think they are both good additions to the networks' race coverage. Even though I never cared fo JB as a jock and always liked GS......as analysts I think JB is better.

exquisitequine 06-13-2006 09:30 AM

bailey is mean. Gary is hot. I loved him in seabiscuit!

Bailey made smarty lose and i will never forgive him for that.

pdrift1 06-13-2006 09:33 AM

bailey-more articulate then stevens and like some of you said has a opinion and sticks with it.when it comes out of bailys mouth i tend to believe he actually means what he says instead of gary sometimes playing to what he thinks we want to hear.but yes both are doing a great job and a asset to the sport since they have come aboard in thier new rolls instead of droping off the face of racing. with these two we finally have opinions from jockeys that were at the top of thier game and felt the pressures and situations that guys like cory black and iggy can't give. but dont get me wrong i'm a fan of iggy puglisi-hes just a cool dude and also a asset to tvg

chupster2 06-13-2006 09:47 AM

I haven't gotten to see a lot of Stevens yet, but Bailey is really quite good. I think having the jockey angle is great for the sport and enriches the coverage. That's also why I like Donna Brothers. She never asks the jockey's dumb questions. I had a friend who knows nothing about racing but commented on "how good that lady on the horse is".

Seattleallstar 06-13-2006 10:12 AM

as much as I am a Stevens fan, Bailey does just a little well in their new positions. Bailey is more concise, and analytical

JJP 06-13-2006 11:12 AM

Its not even close. Bailey is the most knowledgable jockey in recent history. I got so sick of seeing Stevens argue with Tom Amoss on "The Works". Amoss brought excellent commentary to that show and Stevens started arguing with him when he said a few negative things. Bailey in a hand ride.

jpops757 06-13-2006 11:19 AM

Bailey- Stevens are the same person . We are lucky to have them both. But Im one of the ones that enjoy Kenny Maynes off beat style.

i like kenny also but what makes that such fun to watch on espn is randy moss and him together. randy moss is a very good anyalst and a decent capper

hoovesupsideyourhead 06-13-2006 11:49 AM

if we had byk on tv it would be a no brain er...lol...

Scav 06-13-2006 01:26 PM

Kenny Mayne is the best person on all of these shows. I could care less about the handicappers, i handicap myself. Both Bailey/Stevens are educational enough to where people can learn. Wonder how long it will take for Stevens to get his own DVD

That was funny Scavs. I wonder if that Bailey DVD is any good.

chupster2 06-13-2006 02:36 PM

DVD of what?

chupster2 06-13-2006 03:05 PM

Oh jeez. Although, I think that is how he won his races, by really studying (I get killed for this all the time). Bailey was a great stratigist, but not a "talent" guy. It certainly worked. But I don't see that necessarily translating to handicapping.

Yeah, I like Bailey because he tells the truth and says what is on his mind....as a viewer, I want the full story and not the sugar-coated version...Bailey has always been a cut-throat business man and that was fueled by his competitiveness - which made his the best rider in the country from the 90s - mid 2000s IMO...he not only had good ability and a good clock, but he was a very cerebral rider...the only thing I didn't like is that he would 'cadillac' cheap horses in when he thought the couldn't win the race, which as an owner i hated but can occasionally understand..

Stevens was a great big-race rider....was at the top of his game when it mattered...gotta admire him for that..

What does this phrase mean? I haven't run across it before.

This is a good point. I think the ABC/ESPN casts of the Breeders Cup will be better than the NBC cast with the relatively tiring act of Hammond, Costas, Battaglia, and Neumirer.

He would wrap up on them and not try hard to get 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th place money for the owners when he thought he couldn't win the race at the top of the stretch....you've probably seen jockeys who you thought could have gotten 3rd or 4th if they dropped down and rode hard but gave up and just galloped the horse in to finish oyt of the purse money....some of these a*sholes do it all of the time and it pisses me off because I'm an owner..

It is like thgey are too good to try to get you 3rd-place money when they realize they can't win, and you are the one paying them $50-$100 for the mount!!!....crazy...some of these guys with egos don't care because they know that thgey don't need your business anyway....

As long as I dont have to look at that overheating, fat slug, "The Hammer" Hank Goldberg, I am VERY happy. I do prefer Bailey by a little bit over Gary, but I'd rather listen to what either have to say that to listen to Hank Goldberg give his "stone cold" pick of the horse that ultimately finishes 5th...

Yeah, I;ve dealt with him several times in the Fair Grounds press box...he is a terrible handicapper...just hopeless, but so are the bozos on NBC's coverega....Bob Newmeyer and Mike Battaglia couldn't pick there noses...has anyone ever seen them give out a BC winner in any of the 8 races in the many years they have telecasted it on NBC?..Boy, I sure can't...they're as bad as it gets...I wonder what the casual horse watcher that just watches horseracing on big days whe they are on natioanl TV...they probably are thinking, "Damn, these blowhards are supposed to be professionals?"
