My dog is throwing up

amid the other unplesant bs ive had to deal with, my dog has been barking/crying all night and this morning started to throw up. Anyone know what this could be for all u dog owners out there. Its bigger chiwawa i know it spelled wrong but im really worried, its also old we have prolly had the dog now for 17-18 years

thanks for any advice, and yes I know it will prolly have to go to the vet and I might have to hear some sad news

Dogs vomit all the time, that wouldn't worry me unless you see blood in the vomit...I'd also look for mucus and/or worms, mucus could mean something more serious, worms would mean...well, worms! Some worms can be dangerous even deadly so they require immediate attention. What may concern me more would be the barking/crying throughout the night...they can't talk to us but often times such behavior means pain or discomfort of some sort! I'd check the vomit for above, monitor any fecal discharge for the same things and give pepto...but if symptoms continue, especially in an older doggie, I wouldn't wait too long to call the vet!

I'd take him to the vet... pepto definitely helps, too (but not to be used for longer than a couple of days.)

same here...it's not a good thing for the dog to cry all night (unless it does that every night) and now start vomiting...
plus I don't know if you actually tried to give the dog pepto---but if it is anything like my older lab, good luck. I got more on me and the kitchen floor than in the dog.

HAHA!!! Mine does the same thing... she does the same thing my horse used to do and holds it in the back of her mouth and then spits it out all over! My life wouldn't be the same without animals, but good lord, they make it difficult! LOL

first i tried just letting him eat it...then i tried soaking a piece of bread in it...then I tried a wide mouth syringe like i was worming a horse...then I finally got a brain and went out and bought the tablets wrapped it in some cheese and viola! gone....still ended up at the vet though:(

Dogs do NOT vomit all the time. When a dog vomits it means there is a problem. DO NOT give it Pepto unless your vet tells you to. Get your dog to the vet ASAP. Old little dogs showing discomfort and vomiting is not just something that is going to pass by waiting and watching. Kidneys, liver etc. could be in danger if left untreated.

throwing up AND crying all night? Yes....take it to the vet.
It can't hurt getting there sooner rather than later.

Off topic, but I like your signature line... that is so true. If you don't ever take the shot, how do you know if you're going to make it? True...

Seattle Jerry,
I really hope your little doggie is doing fine.
I'm amazed that you got so many responses about the topic of "dog vomit".
Seriously, it makes me want to puke!

Thanks....I wish I could take credit for it but can't.

Wayne Gretzky's dad said that to him that when he was a kid. Guess it worked.

Seattleallstar 11-21-2006 05:45 PM

left work early to get home, my dad no my little brother and my dog looks no worse for wear. Walking around ok, drinking out of its bowl. So it looks like its ok for now, I hope

Seattleallstar 11-21-2006 05:47 PM

Sounds like he'll be fine Jerry...with older dogs you always want to use extra care but again...common sense is the key!

So, I got jinxed...

I spent $200 on Coal today at the vet... she was up all night throwing up. :(

that sucks...hope she's ok...

I've had labs for years and have had many nights like that after they had gotten into something they shouldn't eat...
most recently last spring my corgi and her best friend Lily (yellow lab) ate rat poison...

Yikes! "Dog omen"...pooch karma.
Well, I hope Coal is ok, and it's good to hear that Jerry's is on the mend.
Seems that the pups need us as much as we need them. Heck, look what you've got if you spell dog backwards.

She had a stick for dinner last night, apparently. She's always had a sensitive stomach, but this was extreme... I couldn't believe the irony of the situation since Seattle had just posted about his pup. They x-rayed her gut to be safe and with the exception of some stick particles, everything was good. She'll be on the chicken and rice diet for the next few days. I definitely could have used that money for something else, but the kid and the animals come first. :D

I feel your pain. Mine had a seizure again yesterday and its on meds for thyroid and seizures. Dont know how much longer he will be living. It would be very devestating to my wife if something happened to him. Had to put down a dog around this time three years ago.

Seattleallstar 11-22-2006 06:23 PM

this morning, my dog is more lethargic than usual, and she hasnt eaten or drank any water. Probably will have no choice but to take it to the vet Friday or even tomorrow hopefully there will be one open.

Seattleallstar 11-22-2006 06:27 PM

cajun, what kinda dog do u have, and how old is it?

Sorry Nascar! It's hard to lose a pet,and harder to care for them and watch them go. We put our dog down about 2yrs ago and my wife said she couldn't go through it again.

Rileyoriley 11-22-2006 07:13 PM

Seattle, if your dog is still lethargic and off her food and water, don't wait much longer to get her to the vet. If she's not drinking, she can become dehydrated quickly. Two things you can check-her temp (if you don't have a thermometer, feel the pads of her feet, her armpits and the inside of her thighs). If she feels hot there, she may have a temp. Also lift her lip and press on her gum for a few seconds. See how quickly the color returns to normal after you release the pressure. Deb

Seattleallstar 11-22-2006 09:04 PM

shes warm, and we just tried to feed her and give her water nothing works.

Rileyoriley 11-23-2006 01:31 PM

I would take her to the vet. She may have a blockage in her intestinal track or stomach. Let me know how you make out. Deb

Seattleallstar 11-27-2006 10:31 AM

my doggy got through it fine, thanks for the advice and well wishes. She started to eat and drink up on Friday. Never have I been so happy to see poop and piss on the floor

SCUDSBROTHER 11-27-2006 07:32 PM

All I can tell you to do is get another dog.It is never easy to lose a pet,but I think it helps a little to have another young and healthy one around to love. They would probably demand your attention(and love,)and help you move on a little better. We all know you're in a tough spot(with an 18 yr old dog.)Some of us have been in the same situation, and sometimes younger dogs are the distraction that will make it easier to deal with.
