What a gutsy animal!

:) Good ol' SPOOKY MULDER looked like he was beat deep in the stretch, but he showed that age means nothing to come back and win! This is what horse racing is all about!

paisjpq 11-19-2006 01:35 PM

is it any wonder why so many people love this horse?

KirisClown 11-19-2006 01:37 PM

Amazing performace.. getting passed on both sides then coming back to win like that... what a horse...

Pedigree Ann 11-19-2006 01:39 PM

All Together now: Spoo-ky!

Ever seen a gamer, braver horse than Spooky Mulder? Boy, if we could clone him..., Too bad he's a gelding, because he's the kind of horse we all love to watch run and should be the type breeders want to breed.

(For you X-filers, he has a younger brother by Smoke Glacken named The Smoking Man).

Holy shiznit....what a game old fella he is

avance2000 11-19-2006 03:39 PM

there need to have more high dollar "geldings only" stakes races for guys like this.
what a race!

zippyneedsawin 11-19-2006 04:16 PM

He really deserves the nickname "the gutsy gelding!" What a runner.

intense 11-19-2006 04:58 PM

wow, thats was impressive, thanks for posting the vid.

Linny 11-19-2006 05:22 PM

The horse he beat Morine's Victory is no slouch. I was at an OTB for the race and all the hard core fans LOVE this old horse. It was a contest and for some of them it cost plenty but everyone cheers for Spooky. It's great.
BTW, he trotted into the winner's circle like he wanted to go around again.

randallscott35 11-19-2006 05:43 PM

Can we make sure he gets a good home. B/c I don't want to see what happened to Mountain General happen to him.

Bruce Golden the former owner of Spooky had Lake claim him back. Bruce Golden lost Spooky when he was claimed for $100K back in April. The claim today had to be for sentimental reasons. Good luck to the new (previous) connections!

randallscott35 11-19-2006 08:00 PM

We'll see what good 'ol Scott Lake can squeeze out of him.

Hickory Hill Hoff 11-19-2006 08:08 PM

Let's pool our money together from winnings

We all should put together our winnings, claim this horse and retired him a winner before something happens to him.
I scored the exacta & triple with him today, it's my donation to the cause.

philcski 11-19-2006 09:08 PM

I singled him in the pick 4 with no backup in the race (missed the last leg, too bad), so midstretch I thought it was over and was ready to trash my tickets, but never give up on this guy. Some determination and guts. I couldn't stop talking about it all day... What a great racehorse!

If it was sentimental, they could have claimed him back a couple months ago for $100k. Taking him for $75k yesterday was a better move. This year he'll go into the Gravesend off 30 days instead of the 2.5 weeks he had last year. Aside from the Gravesend, there's probably 10 other small stakes or $75k Optionals they can find for him over the inner during the winter.

I disagree with the ppl who say he should be retired. He's pretty sound, with his feet being the worst of his ailments. To try as hard as he did yesterday in his 70th race, tells me that he wants to run and still can. And if something's not right, he shuts himself down, as he did in the Meadowlands race.

He's made over $200k this year and will go off at something like 3-1 or 4-1 if he makes the Gravesend. If they retired the horse, what would he do?

LARHAGE 11-20-2006 03:21 PM

He can retire to my backyard with all my pasture ornaments, they LOVE having me wait on them hand and foot! :D

Linny 11-20-2006 03:37 PM

The ol' boy's in pretty good shape and no one claims a "charity case" for $75k. I too would be horrified if anything bad were to happen to Spooky but I don't see him being "at risk" at this point.
Seventy five thousand is a LOT of dough to drop on an 8yo gelding and there may be some sentiment involved but they have to look at the investment. He's an Inner Track specialist who got a bonus race with the surface switch this weekend. He should go to the Gravesend and then some of the other winter stakes, as he did last season.

Here's an early look at Spooky's career.
