How can this guy stay in business?

According to the DRF, KY trainer Naseem Rauf has lost 335 consecutive races dating back to 1990, when he had a "breakout" 2 for 76 season. Who would give this guy horses, and how can he stay in business?

2 Dollar Bill 11-17-2006 11:44 AM

Well they kept Dick Trickle in a NASCAR race car for HOW many years?
LOL

ArlJim78 11-17-2006 11:58 AM

All I know is if and when he ever hits the board, or god forbid actually wins a race, the toteboard will need extra decimal places to display the payoffs.

He'll probably also need a guide or escort to help him locate the winners circle.

jballscalls 11-17-2006 12:31 PM

He has a couple horses that could win but the problem is he likes to enter them way over there head and often out of condition. He ran a bunch of horses at River this summer and instead of putting them against bottom maidens or non 2's he would put them on the grass in 25k allowance races. I was told however he is a doctor of some sorts and has dough.

BellamyRd. 11-17-2006 12:41 PM

this would make for a good freelance piece
I may try to dig this guy up
pick his brain
I guess he contradicts the Tom Petty song:
"even the losers, get lucky some time"

Coach Pants 11-17-2006 12:45 PM

I really don't know...

I google'd him and there is someone by the same name who owes almost $200k in taxes.

marty mcgee wrote a blib about him in the form this past summer and he refused comment. He probably just wants to be left alone.

philcski 11-17-2006 01:07 PM

This guy's just a goof. I've seen him run horrific maidens in stake races in kentucky. He trains his own "stock"...

I'm not sure if I want to go to a doctor who cannot even pick up on the basics of training horses, like if you never win a race you may be spotting the horse incorrectly.

JJP 11-17-2006 01:39 PM

Ironic this guy is a doctor. The worst trainer I'd ever seen before him was a guy in Chicago in the early/mid 90s named William Davis, who was a dentist. He'd maybe go 2 for 100 or 2 for 130 for a year.

philcski 11-17-2006 01:42 PM

Perusing the MNR PP's the other evening I saw a jockey that was 0-184 on the year, riding for a trainer that was 0-80something on the year.

That's hard to do.

At least this Nauf guy races in NY which has a higher level of competition.

When you have that kind of record at Mountaineer? You really need to consider some career alternatives.

JJP 11-17-2006 02:56 PM

I don't think I've ever seen a Rauf horse race in NY. He runs mostly in Kentucky and at River Downs.

Is that right? Who am I thinking of in NY then, someone with a similar futile record? Maybe I'm just confused which has been known to happen on occaison.:)

Hickory Hill Hoff 11-17-2006 03:51 PM

I think it's the same guy.

The Funny Part Is Whenever One Of His Horse Show A Little Something In A Race, He Raises Them So High In Class It Seems To Make Sure They Never Win

Its funny and sad. He has horses that can win races if they were just raced at the appropriate level. I guess winning isn't everything and he is just happy to see the horses run around the track in the back of the pack?

Well I guess he just never learned to capitalize as well as some of the rest?

2 Dollar Bill 11-17-2006 04:42 PM

Its all how you look at things....(glass half empty, half full )
He can run last in the 5th race..but that means he is first in the 6th race !

It's like Ida Spagnola in Chicago. I've always had a soft spot for her because she trained Forever Regal, who I loved watching run, but she never wins anything. She occasionally gets a check in an Illinois maiden claiming race, but never gets anything of note.

No No, John Candlin and Ida Spagnola (bwspencer) have records that tower over Rauseem Nauf. He hasn't won in years.
That is the guy we're talking about. The only question was where he does most of his training.

oh no, i know that. i was going more for a response to the post i quoted where someone talked about how they don't win races often but somehow get by -- she doesn't do very well and doesn't win very often, but she keeps doing it. that's all i was saying. not implying that it takes her 300 races to win one :)

i always pull for her horses though for some reason. don't know a thing about her besides that forever regal was hers, that's enough for me to root for her!

Funny, I'm the same way, in terms of pulling for her horses. I always give them a look. Sometimes they come in at a big price.

Yeah I was wrong about the NY part. I think he might be based in Kentucky.

Left Bank 11-17-2006 07:02 PM

We have a trainer like this at Canterbury. He has another job,and he does NOT know how to read a condition book to save his life. His horses will break their maiden at the 10k maidenclaiming statebred level with a 29 beyer, and then he will enter them in a stakes, where they will get destroyed.Same situation.Kinda reminds me of Bob Baedeker on TVG.Tonight,Bob says"I can guarantee a horse is going to win the next race" Duh,Ya think,Bob?

Figured out who the jockey might be, Alfredo Hernandez. Tonight he is listed as 1-170 on the year. Doug Williams and Billy Wilson are two others that race there and almost never win.

Check this link. I Googled this guys name and this Rauf guy is deliquent on his taxes for almost $200,000. I wonder if its the same guy as the trainer mentioned here. I dont think there will be more than one person in LEXINGTON, KY named Naseem Rauf. Who Knows?

He should have dropped those horses down to the level where they could win.
