Joe, who do you like more than Game Winner or Improbable?

cakes44 02-20-2019 08:22 AM

The Mott horse...I guarantee.

knickslions2 02-20-2019 09:46 AM

Gus I think March 9 will tell us a lot about the derby with Tampa Derby and San Felipe running that day.

Improbable and it's not really close.

I think his 2nd best is a Tapit who only ran once and crushed maiden's. It was 9/1 at Del Mar i can't remember the horses name right now.

Magic on Tap

Alabama Stakes 02-20-2019 10:56 AM

Anothatwistafate took off like he was Runhappy down the stretch in 12 seconds. They paid $360 for him so there's no reason to think he won't handle dirt. He's electrifying.

Not sure why the purchase price would impart main track capability to a horse, but Anothertwistafate was buried in his first start, which was on the dirt at Santa Anita. There's many examples of horses getting crushed in their debuts only to display marked improvement next out, but this horse is basically bred for the turf top and bottom.

Gotham is that day as well, though not sure the quality we’ll see in that one. The Gotham winner hasn’t fared well in the Derby in recent years.

RHT2004 02-20-2019 01:50 PM

Mott is obviously holding the goods.
Hidden Scroll is a monster. Country House is good and Tacticus has every right to be good.

I agree Tom, after March 9th the picture will be much clearer.

Even if they are not in his derby dozen, Steve Haskin will give a mention to a lot of other horses. I didn't see any mention of Magic on Tap. I have him too in Pool 1 and also Mucho trained by Mott. He did mention that one.

Mucho working half miles and is expected in an ALW in March.

Waiting to hear back from Mrs. Lyon or Baffert about Magic On Tap, but he's not working, so I wouldn't expect anything soon.

Bill Mott winning a derby works for me. I have to see Hidden Scroll on a dry track. Hidden Scroll certainly can handle a wet one.

Currently has 18pts and with a 3rd place finish he's all but guaranteed a spot in the gate come May 4th. He's an interesting prospect to catch a minor slice going forward.

Good deal - 90% - I'll know for sure next week.

It’s probably just because I have a futures wager on him at 35-1, but I Hope Vekoma dominates him in the FoY. The field looks like it could be pretty good.

Fountain of Youth
Probables
Admire (Romans)
Vekoma (Weaver)
Hidden Scroll (Mott)
Bourbon War (Hennig)
Signalman (McPeek)
Code of Honor (McGaughey)

Possibles
Global Campaign (Hough)
Maximus Mischief (Reid)
Harvey Wallbanger (McPeek)
Mihos (Jerkens)

I’ll take Harvey Wallbanger for $200 Alex

For Hollendorfer, I like Galilean more than GMG. That horse was 3+ wide the entire California Cup and still finished well. I believe West Point owns a piece of both horses and they’ll move forward with Galilean if he outperforms GMG (assuming Galilean runs).

Given the other competition in the San Felipe, 3rd seems like a best case scenario for GMG.

Also for Hollendorfer, I’m interested to see if Rowayton does anything in 2019 and whether he’ll show a little more stamina or whether he’ll prove to not have the distance in him for the classics.

He’s got a shot for sure. I’m on the Vekoma bandwagon but can’t count out a handful of the horses mentioned as probables/possibles. McPeek plans to run Signalman in the FoY, and I think may rest HW and shoot for the Florida Derby with him, which may be a pretty good plan. Why push him if you think he can win the Florida Derby?

opusone 02-21-2019 12:15 PM

No he isn't. He is a total mediocrity who has zero chance in a race like the Derby.

He's more likely to be last.

I'm willing to give him a shot, especially as the distances increase down the road. He had no chance in the Bob Lewis chasing a lone front runner.

HW seems to run well every race. I’m sure he could pass some tired rivals but I don’t see him in the top tier (and there may be 2-3 very good horses in the FoY).

I’m not really impressed with any of the horses from the Holy Bull. I may cut Maximus Mischief some slack because he was off the lay-off. But so was HW.

The replays tell the story. He has run well every time and wants to compete. I like competitive types .
