Congrats Don Guido on a very convincing victory. Finishing with three consecutive winners puts the exclamation point on it.

Clearly, the cream rises to the top when it matters.

Real Quiet 11-05-2018 09:43 PM

Congrats Don. If I'm correct that's 4 Breeders Cup points wins in 7 years. You da man.

I was thinking 3 or 4 Gallivan Cups. You have 2, right? Was the other one JB or Ruff, or ??? can't recall.

We should keep a record of this for posterity sake.

I think you have four now. I was one behind. I thought RYonker won the other one but I was wrong. My apology's to Ruffian who did win in 2016.

I am not sure when the Gallivan Cup started. I know that as a group that I have kept scoring for we are in our tenth year. I know the forum was around before I scored but I played in it.

I am not exactly sure when the Gallivan Cup started. I know that as a group that I have kept scoring for we are in our tenth year. I know the forum was around before I scored but I played in it.

So we started here in November of 2014 but the Format and the Gallivan Cup contest goes back to the Final Turn Forum. And if my memory serves me any where near close I joined the FTF around 2001. I posted now and then on the Vinery Forum before that but got in trouble for being to radical trying to ho d my own with the "Galthouse" boys (I think that's what there group was) and got banned from the forum. Phil Schoenfeld posted then also who is now a trainer in Maryland and doing pretty well for himself. Patty and I all him Pa-fill.

Anyway Final Turn promoted the first Gallivan Cup Award for the end of the year BC in honor of Glen Glenners. Patty and I met Glenners and spent some time with him at Churchill I think the year before he died. Very pleasant man, wheel chair bound and a very knowledgeable handicapper. When FT left her forum I took over the "lead" and boltsterd the Gallivan Cup up and with help from players over the years, including you, made some tweaks and changes to the "rules" for the better but always gave proper credit to Final Turn for the original contest "rules".

So this has been going on for awhile. When I first started, I knew nothing about this sport (but loved the pure beauty and athleticism of the horses and jockeys) but absorbed all I could from the best players. Along with my incredible horse racing "savant" wife over these few years, I'm starting to feel more comfortable in the gate, points picks for sure but lagging at the wagering window. Picking horses, wagering on them is truly the most mind boggling thing I have ever been involved with and that includes helping design the Superconducting Super Collider in the 90's, but long time defunct, right here in Waxahachie, Texas.

I've also learned not to be so damned competitive and that's a good thing or maybe it's simply an age thing. Thanks for who you are and what you and JB and Plen as well all the players for sticking together as much as we can.

It was the "Galthouse Gang" that got me banned from Vinery. Newsflash, this hit me in the frontal lob as I was driving home.

First of all Don I want to state for the record that I am NOT a hoarder and don't save everything <grin> but I wanted to share with you my first encounter with the group in December 2006. This is an e-mail I received from Carol aka Final Turn.

"It is a nice little contest that's been in existence since December 26, 1998. We play SA every year on that date as an Anniversary Contest, just for commemoration.

Wow, I've been all over the Internet with this Contest, but we've been at The Clubhouse Turn since February, I think it was. No, we're not the "railbird" list, although they sound fun! lol

Oh, I think we all have our "chump" days at the track. People procreate faster than I win one of these contests. It's fun, though, and good practice, so I'm addicted to it. The players are great and have played this for a very long time.

Glad you like the site and decided to play. How long have you been into racing? I take it you're a horseplayer?

Carol/Final Turn"

I can't remember how I got here. I think it could have been Plenilune who invited me here but that part is fuzzy. Over the years I have played at a multitude of sites but this is home. As Carol said it's fun and good practice and I'm addicted to it.

Wow, you saved an email from Carol . . . sorry Pete, you are a hoarder!!!:D And I am grateful that Jane invited you in. And then all of sudden one day she disappeared . . something to do with a divorce, via PM, or not so good family issues. And lead me to believe she was an attorney. Maybe I'm dreaming that but hey . . . And I am very glad you call this HOME. Not sure how much longer I can deal with all you "children" but I love every minute of it. Good "story" Pete. Did you ever get the inkling she was a real lawyer?

OK all, this is an unlikely thread to carry on like this (maybe one Pete will save to revisit 5 or 6 years from now, if we're still alive) but it is way too heavy on the Pete and Don show. Anyone else care to add there earlier times on other forums and how you ended up here. BTW - who was the very self indulgent player who was a part time Hollywood stand in. He was a staple to begin with and said he had enough and tool his balls and wanted to play in another playground. Anyone remember his AKA or real name? He was a pretty good player as well.

I'm having fun with looking back a bit. C'mon folks . . . jump in!!!

You're probably referring to Jerry Hauck from the Los Angeles metropolitan area, who used the screen name DeNiro. You're correct, he was a very talented handicapper and had a very good sense of humor (although I don't agree with you about the self indulgent part). I still see his screen name around the web on some other horse racing forums, and from time to time he appears in both movies and TV programs.

Another former player whose departure I greatly missed was John Halvorsen from New Jersey. John was a very likeable person and a consistently strong handicapper; I still see his name in some contest standings.

Just the other day I happened to notice John Servidio's name in the standings of a Remington Park handicapping contest. John lives in northwestern PA (I believe Meadville) and was with our group for two or three years.

Yes, Jerry Hauck, DeNiro. I enjoyed his play and personality as well. I was not referring to Jerry but the "leader" of the Galt House gang, who for sure I cannot remember his name. I got sucked into their fray and paid the price of being booted out . . . but it turned out to be all for the good. Yes, it would be great if we could get the two John's back with us.

My mistake, I misunderstood your reference. I think the "Galt House Gang" was just a bit before my time. From the sound of it, probably just as well.

Plenilune 11-08-2018 04:11 PM

Oh wow, the Galt House Gang. They would meet every year for the KY Derby and the Galt House was their hangout place. They would have dinner there and decide which KY Derby runner was going to get their dreaded Kashmir hex to loose the race.

I believe they put it on Point Given and I loved that horse so much. When he lost I sobbed, literally, cuz I'm kind of a nut that way. After that I strongly disliked them (to put it nicely). I know, I know, it was a silly superstition however it really upset me.

I really miss Ron Yonker and John Servidio who are both very nice gentlemen.

DonGuido 11-08-2018 09:20 PM

Ahhhhh, yes I remember the Kashmir Hex now (thanks Plen) . . . what a bunch of BS. But when there ridiculous hex worked, they all went out and go drunker than a skunk. Where did that term come from "Drunker than a Skunk". I've not seen many skunks in my many years (good thing) and never one that's been drunk . . . :D:D:D

Hey Jane, where you always Plenilune or did you have an earlier AKA. Not sure if you or anyone here remembers but I started out as The Lone Ranger. But it was more of a newbie ID catcher than anything else. My wife has a very funny story to tell about my early years as as the Lone Ranger and her as Anet both being of us on the forum at the same time but her not knowing it.

But this is worth a face to face story after a couple of adult beverages, believe me!!! Not much about real horse racing but . . . pure FUN!!!
