Jose Ferrer suspended at Hawthorne

CHICAGO - Jose Ferrer, the second-leading jockey at the current Hawthorne meet, has been suspended 30 days by Hawthorne stewards, who allege Ferrer failed to do his best to win the fifth race Saturday while riding Burke's Legend.

Ferrer took off his mounts Sunday, though the suspension does not take effect until Friday, Oct. 27. Oscar Sanchez, Ferrer's agent, said Ferrer proclaimed his innocence and would appeal the ruling as soon as possible.

"He didn't do anything wrong," Sanchez said.

Stewards saw things differently, taking swift action less than 24 hours after the race in question. Burke's Legend, trained by Jerry Gryczewski, was the tepid 5-2 favorite in a $4,000 claiming race. He broke in front under Ferrer, raced in second most of the backstretch and around the turn and still was in contention while racing between horses into the stretch. Ferrer appears to pull on the reins at about the three-sixteenths pole while looking to his outside, as Cleaning House, the 3-1 second choice, swept past with a wide run on his way to an easy victory. Burke's Legend would wind up a close third behind 7-2 shot Bull'o the Woods.

Chief steward Eddie Arroyo said authorities were "still investigating" any sign of irregular betting patterns.

The stewards ruling cited Ferrer for violating a statute that says: "Every horse in every race must be ridden so as to finish as near as possible to first and show the best and fastest race it is capable of at that time."

Arroyo said the 30-day suspension was discretionary. "We could have given him more, we could have given him less," he said.

Should get 6 months.

I knew it....I FREAKING KNEW IT....I have seen enough of his rides to know the guy is a cheat. I have told Scavs and Gander countless times the guy is a crook.

Nothing could be worse for the game. This is much too short.

I say take away his freaking license. Very few people watch more races at Tampa Bay Downs than I do, and I have seen him give enough shady rides down there to know he is a cheat.

He burned me once in a claimer. I swear he looked back at least 20 times in the race and didn't urge the horse once.

He should be investigated and banned until the investigation is over.

seen that ride a few time before...the guy is a POS...in my opinion.

what is nuts is that I bet that horse yesterday and I watched the race and just thought the 9 was much the best, guess not....

I just watched the replay...pretty odd. I would guess someone alerted the stewards to this as few are sharp enough to understand he didn't allow his horse to win.

The guy should lose his license....period. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are bet on these races, this guy is clearly cheating, and he gets suspended for a month? Huh? I say give him a fair trial, and if convicted, throw him in jail. Maybe that we would could find out the whole story. Tampering with a sporting event is a federal offense...right?

The jock should be banned for life.
Don't mess with Hawthorne. The jockeys are a bunch of crooks. They all ride over their weight in the winter and get away with it. You think the horse you're betting is carrying 115 when it's really carrying 122 and then some.;)

The sad thing is he really can ride. Trainers know he cheats, we all know he cheats. Infact he was the main cheat in Jersey when he used to ride there. Thats why his career went so icecold about 3 years ago, because he was a noted cheat. Im not surprised hes back to his old tricks.

LOL funny about him eyeing up your lady@the track. jose was in the airport with us this year coming back from the claiming crown and he was tryin 2 holla at a few girls in line while i was talking to him and we were boarding the plane. he does have a girlfriend here now somebody known at the track, i wont name names. yes jose can ride but you call him a cheat in NJ? lol maybe he was riding for the cheaters there meaning gill and shuman. he rode several for us at arlington and came by the barn alot in the mornings, i like the guy alot personally and yes he is a very talented rider, but obviously this isnt good! all the jocks here are crooks huh blue eyes and ride over weight? well people call for stiffer penalties but howcome nobody cries about patin being allowed to return after the valhol incident. in my opinion if your caught usuing a buzzer in a race automatic 10 years, second time gone then you wouldnt have to worry about it no more. people cry for them to be leanient on pval which is a absolute joke condiering hes had way more chances than the average jock would

The guy should have gotten his hands cut off. Honest mistakes I can ALWAYS understand but **** like that should be dealt with Russian style. Regarding PVal, the guy has only cheated himself, not stiffed a horse.

I guess the only question is did the trainer put him up to it? I'm not assuming that, but it is a question that should be asked by the stewards.

Playa Pval has never, ever been accused of not riding his mount to anything less than 150%. Thats why he always has a strong support base of people trying to help him out.
I can name a couple of guys who have ridden in NY the last 20 years who should have been tossed for grabbing horses a long time ago, yet nothing was ever done to either one of them.
I'll take a guy like Pval who only harms himself over guys who grab horses any day.

Pval is incredible. Hes hands down the best rider in the game. Everyone has a few skeletons in the closet, Pval going skiing a few times wouldnt scare me off riding him on any of my horses. Guys the goods, whether hes high or not

Honey, I dated a jock that used to ride at Hawthorne in the winter and I wouldn't exactly say alotta tracks allow "overweights". NY had that deal a while back but why are all the jocks bitching about weight if it's done at alotta tracks? BTW, when I'm talking overweight, I don't mean 2 or 3lbs. More like 10+.
