Horse of the Year Charismatic to Return to U.S.
Derby Champion to Reside at Old Friends

GEORGETOWN, KY - OCTOBER 26, 2016 - Old Friends, the Thoroughbred Retirement Center in Georgetown, KY, is proud to announce that Charismatic, 1999's Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner and Horse of the Year, is coming home.

The now 20-year-old stallion will return to the United States from the JBBA Shizunai Stallion Station in Japan, where he has stood since 2002, sometime in late November, and will be pensioned at Old Friends.

His journey is being sponsored in large part by a gift from his former owners through the Robert and Beverly Lewis Family Foundation, and also from the Austin,Texas-based vodka brand, Tito's Handmade Vodka.

This marks the third Kentucky Derby winner to be repatriated from Japan by Old Friends. In 2014 the farm welcomed 1997 champion Silver Charm (also owned by the Lewis family) and the following year 2002 winner War Emblem. With the arrival of Charismatic, Old Friends will become one of the only farms in the country to be home to three Derby Champions.

"This is yet another dream come true," said Old Friends founder and President Michael Blowen. "Charismatic holds such special memories for so many racing fans, so it's particularly meaningful to be able to bring him home.

Very sad...

Recepta, a graded stakes winner and multiple Grade 1-placed runner, had to be euthanized last week after developing laminitis, a complication from the fractured pelvis she suffered in a training accident during the summer at Saratoga, trainer Jimmy Toner said Thursday.

“It’s really very unfortunate,” Toner said. “It was a freak accident, and then she got laminitis.”

Recepta scored her only graded stakes victory in the Grade 3 Noble Damsel at Belmont Park in September 2015, but she consistently ranked among the best older female grass runners in the country this year, finishing second in her last two starts, the Grade 1 Just a Game at Belmont Park and the Grade 1 Diana at Saratoga, which ended up being her career finale. She also finished second last year in the Grade 1 Matriarch at Del Mar.

Recepta, 5, won 5 of 17 starts and $696,700. A daughter of Speightstown out of the Honor Grades mare Honor Bestowed, Recepta was bred by John Phillips and Hank Snowden and raced for Phillips Racing Partnership and Pam Gartin.

Her full sister, the 2-year-old Defiant Honor, should be among the favorites on Saturday at Del Mar in the Grade 3, $100,000 Jimmy Durante Stakes on the turf.

“Fortunately, we have her to carry on the legacy,” Toner said.
