Roman Chapa under investigation for buzzer
 

Twice banned Chapa being investigated for possibly using a buzzer Saturday night at Sam Houston Race Park..

I had him, keyed a nice p3.. Didn't see the "ON" mark in pp's.:D Seemed like a nice chapa in the martha claussen interview postrace,like a choir boy.

I'm no expert, but if you blow up the pic it does look like 2 metal posts showing. But like I said I'm no expert, and he does seem like a nice person. I would hate for him to get a 3rd suspension for the same thing.

"Following the meeting, replacement riders were named for all five races in which Chapa had been named to ride on Monday.

Steward Dennis Sidener confirmed that Chapa would not be allowed to ride until further notice. “As of this moment, Roman Chapa is summarily suspended,” Sidener said. “At this time’s it’s still being investigated.”

He was 7 5-1-1 at the meet at the time of the suspension.

they should have done that the second time he was caught.

He should be banned for life. And all of the trainers that used him should be banned for at least 90 days.

The stewards who let him back on the track after the second time should be fired if they aren't retired already.

This type of nonsense is what's driving bettors away from the game.

Dealing with jockeys who can't read English, much less a racing form, who can't judge pace, who herd on the far turn with impunity...

What percentage of jocks do you think have used a buzzer at some point in their career? My GUESS is would be <70%.

Is it just me or are both of these statements pretty damning? First, a 70% threshhold is set as some type of reasonable level; second, we have the thought that three out of four might have cheated.

My hope is that you could count the number of instances over the last two decades on your one hand.

Charged with a Felony but Chapa insists the picture was photo-shopped.

This story was on the ABC nightly news at 6:30 last night. You know the media will have fun with this one. During the Derby Trail they will throw out questions like " I wonder how many Jockeys use these buzzers that don't get caught"?. Or, "could this be common practice on the race track"? You know its coming.

And they will do away with the term buzzer. Its to mild. It will now be " a high voltage shock device"

...one other thing, whatever cameras they used to spot that buzzer, I wish they would use them to show the actual races on tv. Sam Houston is the grainiest non-defined resolution of any track shown.:zz:

why just a five year ban? why are repeat violators not just shown the door?! the sport doesn't need them!!


The stewards ruled that Chapa violated four rules or racing: possession of contraband, influence of race prohibited, unlawful influence on racing, and inhumane treatment of horse or Greyhound.


The latest suspension is the third for Chapa for attempting to alter the outcome of a horse's performance during a race. During his first year as a jockey, Chapa was suspended for nine months in Texas for possession of contraband intended to increase or decrease the speed of his horse after he told investigators he used a nail on his horse. In 2007 he was suspended five years in New Mexico for possession of an electrical device and was reinstated on a probationary basis in May 2011 prior to completion of the suspension.

I think the truth of the matter is that the use of buzzers is so common that it's not even considered a big deal. The authorities have to act like it's a big deal but I don't think they truly think it's a big deal. How widespread is the use of buzzers? Since the year 2000, there have been 53 guys caught. I bet guys are caught less than 1% of the time, so there are probably thousands of instances of guys doing it. I had no idea that the use was still so widespread until seeing that statistic that there have been 53 cases since the year 2000.

53 guys caught.... from 2000 to 2014. total number of races in that time span?
820, 114.
that's one buzzer for every 15,473 races in this country.
so..widespread use?
doesn't look that way to me.

Need TSA at the race tracks to stop this insanity.

jockey ron franklin got a lifetime ban for personal drug use...
but a guy can repeatedly mistreat a horses, and can't get a lifetime ban? that is...insane.
