Ed DeRosa tweets get attention after the Shuvee

Ed DeRosa tweeted this right after the Shuvee, on Saturday, in which Zenyatta's half sister Eblouissante finished last after winning her first two races in SoCal.

Ed DeRosa ‏@EJXD2
Now we know why Zenyatta never shipped East. That fate awaited her against real runners on a real surface.

Obviously Eddie D ruffled a few feathers here were some of the responses-

Marc Doche ‏@MDoche 20 Jul
Ridiculous tweet “@EJXD2: Now we know why Zenyatta never shipped East. That fate awaited her against real runners on a real surface.”

Alfredo ‏@PaddockEyes 20 Jul
@EJXD2 That hate-orade has been sitting out n the sun too long!

Racingwithbruno ‏@DeJulio 20 Jul
@EJXD2 man, Eddie, I like you, but that was as brutal as a cheap shot at Zenyatta, ever, no Bruno Works for you @Brisnet

GQ Mamba ‏@its_Drew32 20 Jul
Oaklawn gr.1? RT“@EJXD2: Now we know why Zenyatta never shipped East. That fate awaited her against real runners on a real surface.”

samantha siegel ‏@jayemesssam 20 Jul
@EJXD2 she's not her clone Ed! Big gaps between races a big clue. Stupid argument!

Graham Cunningham ‏@gcunning12 20 Jul
@EJXD2 A truly preposterous viewpoint.

Connie ‏@MsVFAB 20 Jul
@EJXD2 The little boy in you likes to light the match and watch the explosion.

Patti Davis ‏@ShuveeIL 20 Jul
@jayemesssam @EJXD2 A rare time when Ed is just sooooo totally on a different planet. E. was vulnerable even if stepping up on west coast.

Alfredo ‏@PaddockEyes 20 Jul
@jayemesssam @EJXD2 Zenyatta is a Hall of Famer, Ebby has never been in big sis' class.

Larry Zap ‏@larryzapeye 20 Jul
@jayemesssam @EJXD2 Thank You Sam...So Absurd a statement. #silly

Susan Cloos ‏@SusanCloos 20 Jul
@MsVFAB @EJXD2 Yeah I wasn't falling for it.

Ed DeRosa ‏@EJXD2 20 Jul
@SusanCloos @MsVFAB You're one of the few...

Ed DeRosa ‏@EJXD2 20 Jul
@DeJulio @EJXD2 Don't make me use the other guys, Bruno!

Racingwithbruno ‏@DeJulio 20 Jul
@EJXD2 go ahead Ed put Tullman in your stable mail

the incident in the gate knocked a tooth out and resulted in some bleeding from a cut on an ankle

randallscott35 07-23-2013 12:15 PM

Apples and oranges obviously but the idea that you can't criticize Zenyatta's competition is ridiculous. The West Coast gang just can't hear of it. Say a Thank You prayer for Blame every night before bed.

There are some people that believe unless you win at Saratoga somehow you are not deemed "worthy". We saw that with Azeri back in the day, then she won there and suddenly she was truly a great horse. Most people don't feel like that but some do, obviously this guy does.

Zenyatta accomplished enough on dirt you would think she was past that type of criticism but some people have their own agenda.

pweizer 07-23-2013 12:25 PM

Zenyatta did ship east and run on dirt twice if memory serves. She was dominant at Oaklawn and missed by a nose in the Breeders Cup Classic at Churchill.

Zenyatta did get a ton of hype. I don't know if she was an all time great. But, the idea that she couldn't run on a real surface strikes me as plain silly.

Yes, 2 dirt starts, the rest all in Cali and all on synthetic and most against tin cans...but I don't want to rehash Zenyatta, its more the concept that you can't take a weary eye to her accomplishments without being attacked.

I'm pretty sure this was done as a rouse to evoke responses from these people

and shouldn't be taken seriously.

Too further my point lets take Game On Dude, who by every measure is a very very good horse. He has run on dirt and synthetic, in exclusively grade 1 or 2 competition, ran extremely fast figures, ran a super second in the BC Classic while shipping to Churchill but he has yet to win at Saratoga, and to a lesser extent Belmont. There is a perception out there that he just is ok and winning because he runs in California where the reality is he wins because he is very very good.

I am lost on this Saratoga point. I don't care whether a horse runs during this 6 week meet or not, just the general level of competition wherever it is. AQ is fine. And pretty in November.

You can continue saying Zenyatta ran twice on dirt, if you make things up on the internet they must be facts.

This is complete and utter BS. You just made this up out of thin air. We praise Game on Dude constantly as arguably the best horse in the country. Please, find some examples from credible people that supports your contention.

This kind of paranoia is just plain silly.

Where is this perception? Game on Dude has danced every dance, I have never heard anyone say that because he has won races in California he is just ok.

The criticism about Zenyatta was the level of competition she was generally placed against, not that she was based in California.

She won twice at OP, though that really isn't "east". East of California, sure.

Most serious horseplayers I know are east coast guys, and they all think he is terrific.

not zenyatta again...

but i have to say, i can't believe arkansas is now considered 'east'. she shipped in an easterly direction, but i do believe that states on the western side of the mississippi river aren't considered eastern states. matter of fact, i think the original line of demarcation was the appalachians...this side of the cumberland gap is east?

I was not talking about you, I see your show and you know it because I make comments.

Did you see Ed's tweets, the perception among some people is out there.

I will pull up an older article from your partner in crime from Talking Horses last Sunday...he was making this very point after the Santa Anita Handicap, maybe the race before.

of course people down here think if you were born north of I-40, that you're a yankee (i guess i'm a damn yankee, as i came down and never left!).

big gap between races? i thought that was common with shirreff horses? and if she was needing a race, then why the shuvee first off a layoff?

Because their other option, a NW2X allowance race, didn't fill.

again, the trainer doesn't strike me as someone who would rush, or put her in a race she wasn't ready for.
i think samantha is off on her point-i think the gate incident probably is the main reason she didn't run well.

NavalOrange 07-24-2013 10:01 AM

Why wasn't the sister scratched from the Shuvee. Did they not check her after the gate incident to realize she was hurt. My son was at the finish line and said there was quite a bit of blodd coming from her mouth. That injury had to affect her performance.

Who DIDNT she beat that was running in the female division? She raced in three breeders cups for God's sake, its not like she ducked the big races.

She raced the same female scrubs all year long over and over in SoCal except for the BC. Granted, that his how racing goes these days. It was a double edged sword in that no trainers with good females wanted to face her much either.

But, she could have been tried in tougher races all over the country as well as at home. She didn't race in a single Big Cap, Hollywood Gold Cup, or Pacific Classic.
