Hamas: Israeli attack opens 'gates of hell'

>>>(CNN) -- Israel launched a series of blistering air strikes Wednesday on what it says are terrorist targets in Gaza, killing the chief of Hamas' military wing and at least eight others, Israeli and Palestinian officials said.

As the tensions ratcheted up, the U.N. Security Council was scheduled to hold an emergency meeting Wednesday evening.

Palestinian leaders immediately condemned the attacks as an escalation, with President Mahmoud Abbas calling for an emergency session of the Council of the League of Arab States to discuss what he called Israeli "aggression," the Egyptian state news agency MENA reported.

Hamas' military wing warned that Israelis had opened "the gates of hell on themselves" with the move.<<<

i had the same reaction to his post. it's serious stuff. if they don't find a way to calm things down, it will end up having terribly wide-ranging effects.

The air strikes were 'retaliation by Israel for increased rocket attacks from Gaza.'..
OK, fair enough...Let them fight it out and we view from afar...The Isrealis can handle this on their own as they have on all the other 'clashes' with their neighbors...we don't need another 12 year war...

Agree with that. The lessons of Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan are never learned. No matter how much firepower you have, it's hard to beat people on their own turf. They hide among the populace and its hard to distinguish between combatants and non-combatants. I think Reagan and Clinton had the right idea. Just send the bombers over. None of this boots on the ground business.

Yes...and as long as we are fighting 'the war on terror', see nothing wrong with drone attacks..rather that than a 50,000 troop land invasion...

Me too. I've heard the arguments about innocents being killed and I am sorry that happens, but war is hell and innocents are always killed.

If they can argue that Boots on the ground and Long Range bombing has LESS civilian casulties then targeted drones they would have an argument. That would absolutely defy any and all logic.

yeah, tony and i are voth vets, so is our oldest. have several nephews as well as my youngest in the military.

yeah, timmi must have read the welsh proverb that says 'it's easy to be brave behind a castle wall'.

i see our returning vets, who have given so much for so little, and it angers me. lost limbs, lost sight, lost time, head injuries that will effect them forever. and now some dumbass who thinks that medal of honor on the ps3 is how it is in real life is all gung ho to go fight-only, he won't be the one fighting. but yeah, i'm the chicken.
i served timmi, how about you?

twitter....next i guess they'll be unliking each other on facebook.

seriously tho, probably not a bad idea. i have to think in the age of instant communication, and easy access to info, that maybe people will be less inclined to go to war.
in the days of the revolution, etc, it took months to find out news. the war of 1812 was a direct result of incredibly slow communication. we made a demand, and then declared war-and found after we'd started the fight that we'd actually gotten what we wanted. whoops.
and slow news also made a hero out of andrew jackson. his unnecessary battle in new orleans was won and news spread before the word that a treaty had been signed got back to the u.s.

yeah, this 'chicken' is all for war being the last resort, as it should be.

Do you want to have the next middle east war before or after Iran gets nuclear weapons?

The peace process is a farce. So is the idea of any land for peace treaty. The PLO and Hamas want to destroy Israel, period.

This president will not lift a finger to help Israel, which I find interesting since the Democrats all but have locked up the Jewish vote. Still can't figure that out.

If Obama wants to do something, instead of urging restraint from the Israelis as he and Bush 43 have done, instead turn Netanyahu loose. Tell the world, "We've given the all clear. Any more funny business, and the Israeli defense forces will clean your clock."

And when the rest of the world gets involved will you hit the reset button to start the game over?

So what's your answer? Increased 'restraint' from Israel that is already losing the numbers game year after year in population growth due to birth rate? The country is only 9 miles wide at the narrowest point (excluding the eternally "occupied" West Bank of the Jordan River)

To quote Godfather Part 2, the only answer is "to hit them now, while we have the muscle." Or else this whole thing is doomed, and then why are we allied with them at all?

Strategically, with hindsight being 20/20, the 1948 decision to reconstitute the ancient homeland in the same place it was 2000 years before has got to be the biggest mistake made by all of the WWII Allies and United Nations Security Council permanent members. Who didn't foresee that this would cause perpetual conflict that will never be resolved?

I understand why they did it. I'm sure that all concerned thought there would be eventually a normalization of relations and stability in the region. But this is now evident that it won't be stable ever. And the UK, which helped champion this idea left it to us to wrestle with this. And if we decline in world power, Israel is toast. No doubt about it.

You need another 1967 Six Day war to go well and bloody the noses of the enemy once again. But when Iran gets nukes, who knows how long until they turn Tel Aviv and Jerusalem into smoking holes?

Updated at 4:15 p.m. ET: After a day where Israeli aircraft bombed Hamas offices in Gaza and Hamas fired a rocket at Tel Aviv, Egypt's leader on Saturday night said "some indications" exist that a ceasefire might be possible.

"There are some indications that there is a possibility of a ceasefire soon, but we do not yet have firm guarantees," Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi told a joint news conference with Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, who was visiting Cairo.

Egypt had brokered an informal truce in October that has since collapsed, and it has said it is working for a new deal.

I was pleased with President Obama's comments today. He was very supportive of Israel. He said that, "No country in the world would tolerate missiles reigning down on its citizens from outside its borders. We are fully supportive of Israel's right to defend itself."
