no telling what the total $ amount will be on this storm. one picture alone has several cars piled up in a flooded area. going to be high. hopefully no more added to the death toll. |

Watched ABC hour long news at 6.30 and CBS from 10-11 last nite and in between the weather channel, haven't watched them in years...on location reporters were in distress...and Stewart had a re-run due to storm and watched a few minutes of Letterman and was just him and his goofy band leader and no audience... |
i have to admit, probably my biggest pet peeve is when stations such as the weather channel send reporters to stand out in the storms to do reports.
what the hell purpose does that serve? you're telling people it's a serious storm, seek shelter...and then you send a crew in harms way. that makes no sense at all to me. do we really need to see someone in rain gear getting soaked and blown around to know 'hey, it's a hurricane'? |
Revealed today that New Jersey is devastated, both on shore and inland, Chris Christie on Fox this am obviously severely worried, caring about his state and people. Fire burned 80 flooded homes. Manhattan flooded. 38 dead.
Heavy heart for all involved :( |
Amazing you people are taking Fox at their word?

Powerful Article ... non-political
Watching New York City drown In 2005, Aaron Naparstek, a writer with the New York Press, published a remarkably prescient piece about the vulnerability of New York City to hurricanes, the flooding that would result along the hundreds of miles of shoreline in the five boroughs—with the water filling the sea-level interior flatlands and washing over the reclaimed swamps of Brooklyn—and the ill-prepared psychology of “a complacent coastal city” where the ocean is not thought of as a threat. Naparstek observed that in fact New York “is behind only Miami and New Orleans on the list of U.S. cities most likely to suffer a major hurricane disaster.” He cited meteorologists and disaster planners with the city’s Office of Emergency of Management who were in consensus “that the metropolitan region is due for a big one. Overdue, in fact.” Mike Lee, then Director of Watch Command at the OEM, told Naparstek that the worst-case hurricane scenario for New York City—in which 30 feet or more of storm surge sweeps over the city in a category 3 storm event—“gives emergency managers serious gastrointestinal distress.” Nicholas Coch, a professor of coastal geology at Queens College, said “The New York City area is the worst possible place for a hurricane to make a landfall.” http://www.salon.com/2012/10/30/watc...rk_city_drown/ |
what a crazy storm. I never really would imagine seeing pictures like I have of the places I spent my childhood. My brother was in hoboken, four feet of water surrounding his apartment (he's fine).
Kudos to the President, Governer Christie, and the mayor of NY, for a job well done so far. |
Side note..When was the last time the stock market closed for two consecutive days....1884...wow...
|
Just spoke with a good friend of mine that still lives "at the shore" (we never used that terminology growing up) and he said that Bay Head and Mantoloking, two very nice old beach towns are still completely under water and what isnt under water is on fire due to a gas leak that they cannot shut down because the valves are under sand or water. I built about 15 homes on those beaches before I moved, they are all destroyed or washed away completely. Very sad.

I understand the waters are horribly contaminated with gasoline, diesel, etc. and people who stayed back are still being asked to evacuate due to risk of fire. |

whatever
so far they've been doing everything they can. Unless Christie bends over and starts chugging water. The responses have been good. |
|
lots of looting going on..national guard should have shoot on sight order..
|
my brother is in hoboken. they got it bad.
he says the whole town smells like crap, literally, and there are dangerous downed powerlines. He walked 20 minutes to the ferry today to get into Manhattan for work... said manhattan is a ghost town. |

Christie is a very good politician. He started campaining for President as the Hurricane hit. Obama couldnt wait to get here for the photo op. Bloomburg is running a marathon on Sunday while hundreds of thousands in his city are without power and food. The idea that they should get any credit is way premature as things can get very dicey especially since it is getting cold at night and there are a few million people w/o power. |

we in the south have a healthy respect for hurricanes..this is what my town looked like in 04 no electricity for 2 weeks..problem was the temps were 100 degrees..not sure what would be worse..heat or cold after.. |
what more would you like them to do.
its not like you can snap your fingers and have the whole mess fixed. the national guard is doing what they can, the funds were appropriated almost immediately. come on now. a LOT more deaths could have occurred here. I mean, look at this devistation. a lot more. |
yes the word got out and people did what they could .its far from over.politicly obama knew he had to have a 's' on his chest when it came to nj s christie. if he didnt christie would fry him..

The correct response would have been "I have been in contact with the President and the Fed Gov't is committed to helping us in anyway that they can." Cristie has gone out of his way to praise Obama in a very public manner, on virtually every occasion that he gets his mug on TV. We are about to get an Obama/Cristie press conference on tv. Of course the people who need the help wont be able to see it. |
your right mugging for the camera isnt getting water and food to the people..

This is a huge tragedy/disaster, and yeah, so far so good. Proud of Christie and the other govs for being proactive. Nobody is saying there are not people without water, food, etc.today - but they are just wrapping up search and rescue. |

Pretty outstanding response. You and Hooves can keep dissing it, and politicizing it with your typical targets of dislike and pettiness, but that seems pretty wrong and unfair. You guys go ahead and bitch and moan without me. It's completely absurd. I'll wait until tomorrow, when you two are angry that the subways are not drained and all the power isn't back on yet. Good grief. |
im not dissing anything.. its a sad state of affairs..i hope the people do the best they can.and noone asked for your comment riot..and its you that will be sad when obama the great loses the election..

Romney donated a million to the Red Cross today!
Obama got a free sandwich from the Red Cross and said it was great. Total loss at $50 Billion is nothing. The U.S. taxpayer is down that just with the GM stock we're still waiting to go up. |
