... to brighten up even your darkest night...

When Makybe Diva won her thrid Melbourne Cup she did so wearing the bridle of her best friend. Mummify. They had been inseparable.

Smarty had Butterscotch, Seabiscuit had Pumpkin. Roger Attfields horses have their stuffed animals, Amani has her bunny.

Silent Witness had Highlili, Vengeance of Rain had Syllabus, I know Black Caviar and Curtana (she's entered Sunday at Caulfield, by the way) hit the beach together but I don't know that these would count as absolute best friends. Maybe these would be in the spent a lot of time together cause they're stable mates department.

I was wondering, just for fun, which horses have goats or other horses as bffs. :D

I'm sure there are some famous ones that I've never heard and some fun lesser known stories.

Anyone?

It's not a racehorse, but the horse I ride has 2 turkeys, 5 hens, 1 rooster and 2 kittens. The kittens weren't bought "for" him, but the other buddies were because he's a bad spooker.

The kittens follow us while we're out riding. The horse just started accepting the turkeys and chickens and keeps trying to smell them, but they run away whenever he gets too close so he trots after them. :D

I love it! :D

Come on, I thought Big Ern was back.

Thanks to my post, you had an opening to post your overused put-downs of Ernie.

We all walk away as winners here!

Somewhere there is a blog entry about My Miss Aurelia's lucky cat, but I was only able to find the photo:

Sighty, no mocking of Ernie will ever get old.

This seems like a dopey subject -- but it's one that legendary horse bettor and successful horse owner Pittsburgh Phil believed in.

A horse he bought named Belmar had won the Preakness and Belmont Stakes in 1895 (thus making him a dual Classic winner) -- but the horse had fallen badly off of form when he bought him.

'Phil' talks about how he thrived once he hooked him up with a dog.

He utters a line in the following cut that tells you quite a bit about how much the game has changed in 100 years.

Where do you get these clippings?

Sorry Steve, I'll ease up.

To be clear, it wasn't a put down. I'd love to have Ernie posting again.

The clippings in this thread are from the following book:

It was published after Pittsbugh Phil ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_..._%28gambler%29 ) died. Chapter 1 opens with a great line...

George Smith called himself Pittsburgh Phil.

Maybe you should be called Erie Dick?

He was given the nickname "Pittsburgh Phil" to differentiate him from the other Smiths that also frequented Riley's pool halls and it stuck.

Phil is short for Philadelphia.

Erie Dick sounds too much like Pippy's favorite running back Eric Dickerson.

Ebay has three listed currently.

Indian Charlie 09-28-2012 11:56 AM

And Amazon.com has a paperback version being released in just four days, at only a little bit more than $10.

Sightseek 09-28-2012 11:57 AM

Thanks guys!

Calzone Lord 09-28-2012 11:58 AM

It's free at the link I posted.

Probably would be a pain in the ass to print-out though, if having it to carry around is your sort of thing.

Yeah, I used to buy from them.

Then I found the joy of downloading ebooks.

I love books. Probably a bad thing to collect when you move several states at a time every few years. :D My new house has built in bookshelves -- I was so excited!

Dreams really do come true!

edit - I don't see him there... is he invisible?

Don't think the Carole King lyric doesn't go unappreciated. The pinnacle of what we call singer/songwriter.
