Super Saturday

I'll be at Belmont for it this year.

Inspired partially by a long rant about the importance of Super Saturday at this time last year when we first started dating... my girlfriend got me two tickets to the 49ers at Jets tickets on Sunday, the day after.

Obviously this years Jockey Club Gold Cup is a farcry from a Skip Away VS Cigar match-up as an event ... but the race has produced the last 3 Breeders Cup Classic winners when the Classic has been run on dirt.

Five Grade 1's and a Grade 2 at Belmont that day -- and five Grade 1's at Santa Anita as well (The Awesome Again, The Zenyatta, The Chandelier, The Rodeo Drive, and The Frontrunner Stakes ... nice job renaming your races SA  )

Obviously the other major racing day is the following Saturday, October 6th.

Of course the Breeders Cup was always the biggest and best betting day of the year -- but it's an action day and a lot of the horses that run in it are laid off afterwards.

Generally speaking, the two most important days of the entire year for a horse bettor are Super Saturday and the following Saturday. That's when the vast majority of BC entrants make their final prep. If you do a good job breaking down those races after they have been run and if you've paid any attention to the sport at all during the year -- you will do at least a good job betting over the course of the Breeders Cup.

My other birthday gifts from my girlfriend included a Randy Moss jersey (I gotta say, the 49ers have perhaps the best unis in all of pro sports. Simple, clean, sharp. Regal.) and a fancy looking razor blade (I've been using the same razor to shave with for 5 straight years) She also bought me a bunch of socks (because I never wear two that match at the same time)

Anyway, I look forward to being at Belmont Saturday and watching the game Sunday. Hopefully I don't die on the drive into NYC.

You're living large! What a great weekend, and Happy Birthday.

She got you . . . um . . . socks?

Calzone Lord 09-21-2012 07:26 AM

Yeah, I told her it would have been a more clever gift if she had her face customly put on them.

I don't get the big deal about matching socks. I just pick 2 the same color that look close enough in size.

Gate Dancer 09-21-2012 07:36 AM

Sounds like a great time............best of luck on the day. Will be interested in your post race analysis of the card. I'm heading to SA for my first Breeders Cup and the homework will begin after Super Saturday.

As for the sock thing, well.....................

Calzone Lord 09-21-2012 07:41 AM

Santa Anita's card will be very interesting as well...especially with the BC itself being held there.

The only real annoying and frustrating thing with the two days is that Keeneland is polytrack and getting a read on the 2yo stakes over synthetic is tough when they're coming back on dirt.

Gate Dancer 09-21-2012 07:52 AM

My Breeders Cup trip is being funded by my duties as a high school volleyball referee. (insert your spandex joke here) I'm reffing an all day tournament on the 29th so it will I will be placing a few pick 3's early in the day and enjoying the replays later that evening. Keeneland grass races have value to me but I don't pay that much attention to the main track races. Very happy SA is back to conventional dirt.

Calzone Lord 09-21-2012 08:20 AM

We only had female high school volleyball here in PA.

The true degenerates would be the ones who show up to watch high school female volley ball and high school female swimming ... and don't have a daughter playing either sport.

rpncaine 09-21-2012 09:19 AM

Camel Toe...could you name a horse that?

This is excellent advice, the fans are less than friendly.

For some reason, Jet fans don't share the love for Randy Moss:zz:

ateamstupid 09-21-2012 01:10 PM

Have fun, Doug. Should be a good game. As for wearing your jersey, it depends on where you're sitting.

Or if you are going to get dropped into your seat from a helicopter. Why bother.

...and how he acts at the game. Jump up and down and make the first down sign everytime Moss makes a catch at your own peril. Respectfully root for your boy without aggravating those around you and most will leave you alone.

If his internet personality is to be believed, Doug strikes me as the former.

Pretty much the rule at any stadium I've been to except Oakland Coliseum and old Veterans Stadium in Philly.

I know. I was trying to be optimistic.

I've seen many confrontations between fans. Almost everyone was started by the person rooting for the visiting team acting like a douche.

Go to the game, wear the jersey, don't respond to the verbal taunts and you'll be fine.

This is good advice. I've all seen a lot of confrontations at Jets games and they started similar to what you're saying.

As a 14 year season ticket holder from Sec. 729 in the Vet, I can say with certainty that even sitting respectfully and rooting quietly was no guarantee of safe passage if it was obvious via colors. If the Birds won, visitors were subjected to good-natured ribbing. If they didn't, they were subject to much more unpleasant treatment.

MetLife Stadium is far different from the old Vet, my friend.

With the new stadiums and astronomical ticket prices, they have priced a lot of the trouble makers right out of the market.

Especially in the seat license era. The licence you sign when you get the tickets gives them the right to revoke tickets for any rediculous behavior. This makes resellers a little more selective.

It's not what happens in the stadium , it is what happens in the parking lot after the game when everyone is tuned up and after the 49ers pound the Jets... That is the concern. Not a smart move Doug.

The tard : reasonable/casual fan ratio is much lower than at the old Meadowlands. Cute dig though.

Sorry you didn't get the cock fighting match you were looking forward too, but have a great time anyway!

Calzone Lord 09-21-2012 07:45 PM

Thanks for the Advice.

I think I'll wear the Moss Jersey to the track Saturday -- and bring my Tim Tebow Denver Bronco jersey to wear to the game on Sunday.

She will be fine, Denver fans will give her a good ribbing, but we are non-violent. Too sunny all the time.
