Shannon..aka South Beach Luv and his wife did a remarkable thing to save an otherwise random 9 y old mare. It got a lot of attention on the Barn To Wire site but deserves more and thanks to Marcus from DRF it did..read and enjoy..

What a sweet story! So many want to help save them, so many need to be saved. The Carpenters made it happen. Well done.

Thanks for sharing Bob. She is a real sweetheart of a horse which made the whole thing even better. She isn't moving but 35 mins away and we are welcome to visit anytime so that is great too.

Is it wrong for me to want to punch Baird in the face for charging $1000 for that horse?

richard 07-26-2012 08:49 PM

No CS. Maybe someone will slap his face.

Supposedly that was what his guy in Thistledown was going to pay him, if he even exists.

We had no direct contact with him throughout the whole process, everything went through the other trainer there, including as the story mentioned the day my wife paid for her.

In the end though, the $ wasn't a big deal and he did keep his word on giving us first dibs on buying her.

Thanks man, obviously I didn't post those plays from the story in the selections forum, otherwise they would have been losers :D

Much respect SB, amazing thing that you and your wife did here. If every player who won money on a horse did the same there would not be a problem.

It amazes me that owners could do this. Thank you for exposing to the racing community what a piece of garbage Baird is. Wonder if he has enough of a conscience to make sure he never gets exposed as a heartless j***off like this again. You saved one horse directly but probably many more indirectly.

Calzone Lord 07-26-2012 09:28 PM

Nice story about you and your wife, SBL.

tiggerv 07-26-2012 10:31 PM

Very cool :tro:

South Beach Luv 07-26-2012 10:53 PM

Thanks all.

Her next to last race she almost finished fourth, there was a photo for it, it was the first and probably last time I will ever want to lose one.

Sweet, wonderful story. :tro: Congratulations and thanks to Heidi & Shannon for taking on the responsibility and ensuring Oil Money's Dream a second career. Nicely told by Marcus.

What you did was really great. It just pisses me off when these guys take money from people that could be used to care for the horse. While I also understand that when you "give" a horse away there is always the threat that someone will profit by just flipping them to the meat market getting $1000 for a complete liability (earning nothing but still eating whatever meager feed they were giving her) is not exactly ok

LARHAGE 07-27-2012 09:24 AM

That was awesome!! Thank you for caring and going above and beyond, may Karma reward you both!!

You obviously know a lot more about this scenario than me, what do you think should have happened then? A couple hundred dollars? We are not or never did complain about the 1k purchase price, but like you said that $ could have went towards the horse instead of in Baird's pocket.

And thanks to everyone else. My wife just left to take her to her new home.
