3/14 seed shockers! Bold Ruler tops Barbaro, Citation fells John Henry

Those are the two big "upsets" in round #1 of the voting for most popular horse in Internet history.

Calzone Lord 07-24-2012 05:16 PM

I botched the thread title.

I can't do anything correct today.

Someone test me for Bath Salts.

Cannon Shell 07-24-2012 05:18 PM

These results smell fishy. Current/recent wonderhorses Frankel, Black Caviar, Goldikova, IHA, Shackleford all lose?

I know. Big Brown failed as the 6th seed as well.

Afleet Alex did at least beat Silver Charm...but other than that, the right horse won in a surprisingly high number of instances.

The person from the Paulick Report who choose the top 64 horses and made the seedings looks more dopey than the Internet voters.

The entire premise is bizzare or stupid or both

Calzone Lord 07-24-2012 05:37 PM

I think the premise is to find out how Zenyatta would do against other names from different generations and countries.

Yeah should we just pencil her in? Kinda amazing that Alysheba lost to War Admiral, but I guess folks voting for Seabiscuit couldn't resist setting that up. I like War Admiral, I just think "the People's horse" should've come out ahead.

Superb job.

Zenyatta will defeat Personal Ensign in the quarter-finals, proving for the Zidiots that Z was the better horse.

Calzone Lord 07-24-2012 07:31 PM

We really should work together as a message board on this, and make sure Afleet Alex wins it all.

Think about this ... if not for Afleet Alex, Giacomo wins the Kentucky Derby, Scrappy T. blows them out in the Preakness and Andromeda's Hero edges the maiden Nolan's Cat in the Belmont.

That's a good one, Doug. I know you mean Afleet Alex not being there at all. But think about this....Afleet Alex is there, and he doesn't recover from the "incident". Scrappy T wins, and is the quickest DQ that any of us have ever seen. That would have made Giacomo the Preakness winner.

We need to thank Afleet Alex not just for being there, but for his heroics in that Preakness. If he hadn't done what he did, Giacomo would have been going for the Triple Crown in the Belmont, and that 3 weeks and those asterisks would have been pretty difficult to deal with.

Definitely both.

slotdirt 07-25-2012 08:00 AM

Excellent points on all counts on Afleet Alex. My appreciation has grown for the horse in spades by the two minutes it took to read this thread.

Merlinsky 07-26-2012 10:16 AM

Rachel vs Buckpasser is going on now. It's fun trying to guess who of the Buckpasser voters genuinely prefers him as opposed to the ones who are bitter about a certain 2009 HOY contest. He deserves fans, and I'm one of them, but let's not kid ourselves. There's tactics going on here.

Calzone Lord 07-26-2012 12:33 PM

Buckpasser was a better horse than RA. More popular among folks who inhabit the Internet in 2012? No.

Holy Bull VS Bold Forbes is fascinating. Similar style, similar ability, BF was a dual Classic winner despite his run-off speed, but Holy Bull was great after he failed to fire in the Derby. I'd take Bold Forbes as a 3yo over Seattle Slew, but probably give a slight edge to Holy Bull and certainly he was the more popular horse of the two.

Spectacular Bid fails to make the sweet 16. He is eliminated in round 2. Considering how well females have done, I was surprised he got by Genuine Risk in round 1.

Zenyatta is going to own Dr. Fager in the next round.

The two Cinderella horses, 14-seed Citation  and 14-seed Bold Ruler have both scored 2nd round wins. Citation looks to pull off another massive upset when he takes on Cigar in round #3.

Personal Ensign is the last survivor of the horses to race in the 80's ... Spectacular Bid, Easy Goer, Sunday Silence, John Henry, Alysheba, etc have all fallen.

DaTruth 07-26-2012 06:31 PM

If those yahoos get to choose between Native Dancer and the "dancer," you know who they'll chose.

Native Dancer lost to Cigar

......as great as she was i dont see her beating any of these.

Danzig 07-27-2012 06:59 PM

it's the facebook generation...
the grey ghost was incredibly popular in his day. he stood out in the days of black and white television.
but, popular now doesn't exactly mean talented. how else can you explain paris hilton and snookie?

Calzone Lord 07-27-2012 07:08 PM

Cigar edges out Citation.

Zenyatta blows out Dr. Fager.

Cigar won by 2 votes I read.

Zenyatta wins the whole thing in hand. I would like to know the % of voters of male vs female, because from what I have seen it is like 75%/25% in the females favor.

DaTruth 07-27-2012 07:20 PM

Rachel could pull it off. The announcement of her foal's name has to be worth a few votes.

I will post this in her seed, it is by far my favorite horse racing video, I'm going to watch it again now for the probalby 12th time and it will no doubt give me goosebumps again.

I hope it comes down to Zenyatta VS Man O' War so I can vote for Zenyatta.

i don't know that she'll get much of a boost because of 'jess's dream'. seems anti-climactic to me.

They had so many people suggest the name that they picked it out of a bowl. I figured they'd want something a little more unique.

yeah, probably not a great name for a young male, albeit a horse. ;)

How completely, utterly, ridiculously sad.

If young horse racing fans can't appreciate Dr. Fager - especially with YouTube availability of his races - this sport is doomed.

Jess's Dream sounds like a filly. A little girl named Jessica had a foal named after her.

I wonder if, when they sell Rachel's full sister Samantha Nicole, whether the new owner will change the name. Sorry, but it doesn't trip off the tongue as much. I'm sure it was named after a kid, but I wouldn't keep it. It's not bad luck to do that, is it? Like renaming a boat?

yeah, it sounds like a filly name to me, too. that was the first thing that struck me, that it's not a masculine sounding name at all.
some think renaming a horse is bad luck. but it happens, bodemeister for instance.

Do you mean Paynter? I know he was renamed. MC's Dream or something.
