Joe Drape Not as Sharp as He Thinks
One of the things that has struck me through the recent spate of articles from the NY Times is how defensive and seemingly offended Joe Drape has been when anyone has had the nerve to question his knowledge of the sport. If this recent tweet of his is any indication, he should drop the act:
"Saint Ballado never one [sic] anything of note and was a half ass sire." "A half ass sire"??? Saint Ballado went to stud after a decent racing career (Grade II winner of $300,000) and initially stood in Florida for $2,500. His succeess in Florida led to him being relocated to Taylor Made in Kentucky. At the time of his premature death in 2002 (at age thirteen), he stood for $125,000. He was North America's leading sire by progeny earnings in 2005, and among the 70 stakes winners that he produced were 2005 HOY Saint Liam, multiple champion Ashado, Met Mile winner Yankee Victor, Captain Bodgit, Sunriver, Sister Act, Flame Thrower, Straight Man and Star Dabbler. I wonder when the retraction is coming. |

I think it's roughly 1/20 that he was drunk when he wrote that.

Nothing says pathetic quite like Twitter.
It's where the twat meets the sh!tter. I have pretty low standards, but one thing even I will never do is start a twitter account. |

Twitter is basically Internet text messaging...every page I've ever looked at makes the creator of said page look like a huge douche. |

(Seriously, people on an internet board complaining about Facebook. The unintentional meta is sheer brilliance.) And yes, Drape is an idjit. But what do you expect from a paper that pays David Brooks and Ross Douthat to spew drivel on a regular basis? |

I've been thinking that was Costanza (Jason Allexander) forever

I can understand if you're doing twitter for purposes like BTW, Byk, Travis, Pat, and NTamm etc. If not, what's the point? If I wanted to read a bunch of short thoughts -- I'd buy Jack Handy. "I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they’d never expect it." Now, that's brilliant. Basically, it all boils down to people believe they're interesting enough that they feel the need to update the world on their current doings... they aren't. Well, other than Randy Moss anyway. And Randy Moss basically dedicates his entire twitter existance to the two loves of his life ... fish and homeless people. If Moss has a digital camera handy, and he comes across either a fish or homeless person, it's a lock he's getting a picture and posting it on twitter to add to his numerous collection. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
So, all in one thread, we've now identified one character who wants to be a marine biologist and another who faked being one.

In theory, people who come here should prefer substantive discussions and arguments about horse racing and other issues of the day. These forums should be places to go for important matters -- like to debate the merits of the top horses in training and to discuss and analyze past and future races. Facebook is where people should go for less important stuff like talking about jockeys, dishing out hyperbole about the greatness of Zenyatta, and calling Todd Pletcher a f@ggot. |

sorry, i disagree. lady who works for me is constantly telling me about the latest uproar between family members on facebook...or a friend who tangled with the woman who works for the florist-she posted something snide on f/b-and a catfight will ensue. and yet, not once have i ever mentioned to her a thing about derby trail. no one in my family on it with me, i don't report every day the latest happenings at home, or at work. who here knows what my kids are up to right now? but on f/b, i would be expected to constantly update all that bs...i don't care what anyone's status might be. it's why i come here, to escape that tedium and engage in discussion, both light-hearted and otherwise...to talk about horses and issues, not about me or mine. |
Here is a sampling of my recent facebook posts ... I've graduated from posting fast-food reviews to now posting snippits of the few memorable conversations I've had recently.

I always thought Warren Sapp was by far the best player on that great Miami Hurricane defense that couldn't beat Nebraska. So did everyone, Sapp actually got a few Heisman votes.
But, you knew Ray Lewis was going to be a great pro when you heard him proudly boasting about how he only wore two pairs of jeans his entire time at the University of Miami. If your proudest boast coming out of college is that you only wore 2 pairs of pants your entire time as a star at a university like that one -- it's really no surprise he is the greatest defensive player in the NFL I've ever watched play. That is the kind of crazy thing you'd expect to hear from someone who is undersized, but truly great and was getting better all the time and is still a factor even though he's ancient now. Sadly, the twitter account for Ray Lewis is run by a PR guy who just posts about charity events. Could you see Ray Lewis in front of a keyboard texting whacked out stuff and making himself look like a complete moron like a lot of these athletes do? |

Ray Lewis was at Miami from '93 to '96. Ray Lewis was on the dominant Super Bowl winning defense of the Ravens in 2000 when Reed was still in college. Ray Lewis is an old surly Mofo. He might have about 8 super bowl rings if the Ravens had a good offense. They even won games with Kyle Boller. Ray Lewis was once accused of a double murder -- and is now giving speeches to uppity Stanford kids. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07fhOVQ9wEA |

The Ravens D that year was so fun to watch. It's the only defense I've ever seen where 3rd and inches for an offense seemed like 3rd and 6. They were almost impossible to run on in situations where the run was likely.
And in other news -- Facebook still has a boat load of single, angry, extremely horny, but desperately needy divorced moms on the market. |

I'm going to go ahead and call hyperbole on Calzone Lord for that last one. I'd take the '85 Bears or <insert 70's Steelers team here> over the 2000 Browns.

I was 4-year-old when the '85 Bears dominated. The 2000 Ravens could be passed on at times, and didn't have the greatest pass rush to say the least. Maybe not the best complete defensive unit in NFL history. However, they played a 4-3 with Sam Adams and Tony Sirragussa protecting the middle for a dead of his prime Ray Lewis. It was impossible to run on them when the run was expected. Best run defense I've ever seen BY FAR! That team went like 5 straight regular season games without a touchdown ... and they still won a Super Bowl with first Tony Banks and eventually Trent Dilfer playing QB. |
Trent Dilfer could play some quarterback...if one listens to Trent Dilfer tell it.

Quote:
The Ravens toughest test in the playoffs was when they beat the division champion Titans 24-10. Dilfer and Banks combined to go 5-for-17 passing with 0 TD's and 3 sacks. The Ravens running game managed only 49 combined yards rushing. They had just 6 first downs the entire game. Yet, they won 24-10 thanks to a blocked field goal returned for a TD and a Ray Lewis 50 yard INT for a TD on a play where he basically ripped the ball right out of Eddie George's hands. Great memories. Indian Charlie knows how big of a fan I was of the 2000 Ravens all season long. That was one of the last nice future wagers I've cashed on sports betting. |

Not just my opinion. “Can’t say I’ve [coached] against anyone better in the secondary than Ed Reed,” Belichick said. |
Payton Manning has expressed these same sentiments several times in the past.
|
Woodson was pretty old when he played for the Ravens. He was a great Pittsburgh Steeler player.
Ed Reed is certainly a great player...but he's a far bigger menace against the pass. For a coach like Belichick, who has a pass heavy team that constantly throws the ball, he's got to fret over Ed Reed way more than your coach of a balanced offensive team. |
