DrugS Derby Dozen

I've scanned the PP's of all 398 horses who have just recently been nominated to the Derby and Triple Crown series for a $600 sum by their owners.

I am now ready to release my Derby Dozen.

#12.

This horse is seriously way too talented -- but I just like that D. Wayne Lukas/English Channel combo. Note how the trainers ROI is in the toilet with every category except routers.

#11

Again -- another horse way too talented -- but it's that D. Wayne/English Channel combo...and you have to love that its never run beyond 5.5 furlongs.

#10

Now this is a D. Wayne/English Channel combo I can go for!! Nothing says serious triple crown threat quite like a double digit length drubbing in a 40K maiden claiming race!

#9

Again -- I should probably be trashed for including a horse with so much proven talent on this list...but note how this guy has never run beyond 7 furlongs and has given ground away late in the stretch every single time.

Now, this looks like D. Wayne's star! Never has this one Beyer'd better than a 50...and he's only beaten a combined total of 6 horses in five career races.

#7

Throw out the wet track race at Sam Houston and this Craig Upham trained runner looks promising.

#6

Hopefully he isn't named after the place where they plan to serve him on a plate.

#5

Trainer Martha Knox is very live with this son of Orientate who won a Retama Park MSW mile in a supersonic 1:44 flat.

Calzone Lord 02-11-2012 07:44 PM

#4

Nice to see Dale Romans getting involved. He has a big look with this Indiana Bred who was beaten a combined 50 lengths in two starts against Indiana breds at Hoosier.

#3

Nothing says $600 well spent like nominating this unraced Michigan Bred son of Syncline who has no published workouts.

#2

I watched this New York Bred "run" in the OBS June 2yo sale. The horse that played Secretariat in the Disney movie would toy with him. Nice worktab so far.

#1

This is bold!! They paid $600 to nominate this filly? Shouldn't they just aim her to the Kentucky Oaks instead?

What's another 600 bucks when you already spent $625,000.

Who is the best Michigan bred ever? Someone on this board must know.

Baker and Mack should should just light their money on fire and save some time.
Pretty sickening the horses they buy for over 500k.

Cashiers Dream, I just remember she was really fast

Indian Charlie 02-12-2012 01:11 AM

Badwagon Harry for best Michigan bred.

I like the Lukas half to Halfbridled. Should have a stellar career.

Merlinsky 02-12-2012 01:49 AM

What, no Derby Dozen video a la Haskin?

Tenpins, of recent horses. Graded stakes winner at Kee and AP. There may be some older ones with better race records, but I can't recall any.

ArlJim78 02-12-2012 10:11 AM

for notable MI breds its slim pickings, going way back there was one called Thumbsucker who had a decent record, and may have raced in the derby as I recall.

Private Thoughts also, that one was from the 70's.

There is a son of Tenpins with a great name considering the pedigree who was foolishly nominated to this years Triple Crown.

Big Dougie... I know the falling out has been rough on both of us, but how about a real Derby Dozen. Curious of your thoughts at this point.

How should I know? I just figured this would be a good first step in regaining your spot as #1 nutlicker.

Despite his many desperate attempts....and they were frequent and desperate, we've never been friends.

I think you should give him another chance though.

I'm going to save you from yourself here. I'm messing around. No one I talk to cares about you enough to talk about you.

I was just getting you going because you started with the rumors nonsense.

Hilarious.

Fed Biz = Dramatic Gold or Diazo
Take Charge Indy = Graeme Hall or First American

Without your endorsement:

Battle Hardened = Monarchos
Fed Biz = Red Bullet
Take Charge Indy = Lemon Drop Kid

Diazo was a damn nice horse.

He was a huge disappointment in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. Considering his lack of seasoning, he ran well in the Kentucky Derby and BC Classic.

That was a rough start to the '94 handicap season. First, Gilded Time flamed out in the Malibu. Zignew won the San Fernando, then broke down in the Strub. Diazo broke down training for the Big Cap. The Wicked North was toast after the Hollywood Gold Cup.

But hey, at least Kissin Kris and Stuka stuck around.

He was a tough horse for a very long time. He was injured more than once, but kept coming back in good form.

He was highly touted early as a 3yo but was absolutely dusted (along with several others) by Holy Bull in the Florida Derby. That pretty much knocked him off the Derby trail, but he came back well enough to hold his own against his elders in some big races later that year.

Not counting the Big Cap, which preceded a 6-month layoff, Dramatic Gold was the only horse to finish in front of BC Classic winner Alphabet Soup in '96.
