Name Changes
Every time I see the name the Evening Attire Stakes I smile. I love that they renamed the Aqueduct H. for him.
So I'm wondering... what other living horses deserve a race named in their honor or renamed (not a fan of this except in cases like the above. I wasn't a big fan of the Lady's Secret being renamed. That's wrong to swap one for another)? ...and what about specific races? Should, for example, the Arlington Million be renamed for John Henry? Is there a race that you feel should be changed to honor a specific horses? Curious to hear your thoughts. |
As soon as Musir retires I would hope the Sheik names something for him. Hr has raced 13 times in 3 years
|
I have to admit I preferred when stakes had names that werent changed every few years.
|
Man O' War is over the hill, I say we rename it the Gio Ponti.

I thought this thread was going to be about Ittasak, aka Dynever. I guess it still could be.

Zacocity became Sattaie, Premium Tap Allam, Muller is now Alsaqeer and Joe Louis... didn't they change his name too? Nice horse who won everyones favorite race, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Cup :D. I think he had a name change too but just cannot remember and don't feel like spending the night looking for Saudi racing sites. I won't bombard anyone with all the HK runners... let's just say there are a LOT (but at least they get cool, somtimes fun, interesting or occassionally really really bad names. As far as I'm concerned these beat Sattaie and Allam any day of the week). |

Pat's wrong. King's Boy won this race last year before finishing a distant fifth in the Dubai World Cup. Dynever, whose name has been changed to Ittasak by his new owners, Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Sons, finished another 6 1/2 lengths in front of Alssarh, the Argentine-bred formerly known as Second Reality. http://www.drf.com/news/kings-boy-wins-desert One of a million... I can post more links if anyone would like. |
Better Talk Now...
He was in the BC how many times? He holds the record, right? How about a race named for him? Perfect Drift? |

Kona Gold was before my time (in terms of racing) and the little I know about him is because of King but i didn't know this...I had no idea. |

I had no idea.
The more I learn the more I realize that i know so little (that sounded illiterate but I think you know what I'm trying to say). I think I've only seen a replay from one of his races, I'm embarrassed to say. Off the top of your head which other horses started so late? Do any come to mind? |
I can't think of any as good as him that started so late. I'm sure there probably are a few.
|
Although not in the league of Kona Gold, Alumni Hall (earner of $747K) won his career debut at Keeneland, when he was a 5YO.

I remember when he beat Colonial Colony (who I absolutely loved) in the Maxxam Gold Cup. I don't think I had heard of him before that but I was pretty new then. Thanks for the info. I never realized any of them started so late. |

Kharimes! That's the awful name he ran under! It was driving me mad. Muller as well... he became Alsaqeer poor guy. Okay I'll step away from the nice thread now... |
I started by asking who else deserves a race but this made me wonder something else...
http://www.drf.com/news/hovdey-zenya...a-anita-statue Who deserves a statue? |

Unveiling Of Sunline Memorial At Ellerslie Friday, 24 February 2012: (excerpt) Auckland Racing Club and the connections of champion New Zealand mare Sunline, will unveil the Sunline Memorial at Ellerslie on Auckland Cup Day on March 7. A statue in commemoration of Sunline will be unveiled beside her grave just outside the entrance to the stables at Ellerslie Racecourse. The world's highest earning racemare of her time, Sunline (Desert Sun x Songline) raced on 48 occasions for 32 wins including 13 Group I races, nine seconds and three thirds to earn over NZ$14.5 million. She was named New Zealand Horse of the Year on four occasions and is also the only horse ever to win the Australian Horse of the Year title three times. http://www.racingandsports.com.au/ra...asp?NID=240384 |

... but this is the line that I'm wondering about... The Eddie D Stakes, which has Grade 3 status, is the new name for a race previously known as the Morvich Handicap, and is part of a change in stakes names for the autumn meeting. Wonder how many and which ones... |

I think when folks hear "the Mine That Bird Derby" they'll assume you wanna talk about when Mine That Bird won the Kentucky Derby. |
