Urban Meyer to Ohio St

ESPN reporting that its a done deal. 7yrs/40million. Its hard in NCAA football. You have to get your players in there. So how long do you give a guy? A lot of guys recently have not even had 3 years. Meyer is a great coach and does well everywhere he goes. If this report is true, I say they are playing for a National Championship possibly next year. If not the year after. The young QB that they have, Braxton Miller.... Urban wanted him at Florida and is insanely high on the kid. We shall see.
The report I read says the announcment will come Monday. Now if its all true, does he take over this year? Does he coach the Bowl game? How will it all work?

Danzig 11-23-2011 06:16 PM

"I have not been offered any job nor is there a deal in place," Meyer said in a statement. "I plan on spending Thanksgiving with my family and will not comment on this any further."

On Wednesday, the New York Times reported that there are a handful of obstacles Meyer must clear before further engaging with Ohio State, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. That includes speaking with his entire family over Thanksgiving and further researching just how significant the NCAA sanctions against Ohio State may be.

People within the athletic department and close to the team told The Associated Press the job has not been offered to Meyer and nothing has been completed. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the coaching search is supposed to be confidential. Athletic director Gene Smith declined to comment Wednesday.

I may be a zebra, but I know football.

This is an awful thing to do if it happens...awful.

Fickell should remain and the carpetbagger should go down to 'Nana and learn more about how to scam everyone.

Typical religious guy. The more he talks the longer his nose gets.

RockHardTen1985 11-25-2011 01:19 PM

The denial from Meyer is to avoide a hectic Holiday. He will be the Ohio St coach come early next week. He wants to spend the holiday weekend with his family, can you blame him?

clyde 11-25-2011 01:20 PM

Something here is not making a lot of sense.

Other than RockTard.

I wouldn't bet on this goof being the next hc at Ohio State.

I thought he wanted to spend the rest of his life with them. Isn't that why he left UF?

Whatever he said then does not really matter now IMO. If your Ohio St who is better? Everywhere this guy goes he wins and wins big.

think back to '07, and then let me know.

go talk to steve spurrier about life after florida as well.

clyde 11-25-2011 06:47 PM

Frankly, a guy who quit twice when things were going south---just a year or so ago, that's not the type at whom I would throw money.

In fact, considering it was essentially greed that got the world in the mess it's in...I wouldn't throw money at anyone.

Ohio State has the right guy now as HC, but they're too stupid to realize.

I quit them if they hire Bourban Meyer.

Danzig 11-28-2011 09:10 AM

i'd imagine fla fans aren't too thrilled with ol' urban right now. but thank goodness he's got a clean bill of health now!!

it'll be a walk in the park up there compared to the high stress life of the sec. who's better? lol rht, did you really put that? isn't the ncaa still working on their sanctions?

lol what? I think you were the first one who told me I was wrong on this. This was a done deal since early last week, I was spot on. He wanted the Holidays for himself and his family. First thing Monday morning this is announced. No one is better then this guy, this is the perfect fit for Ohio St.

i didn't say you were wrong at all. i just thought i'd post that excerpt since it wasn't a done deal, and i've seen espn make up crap before. i don't trust them when they bring out 'sources say'.
i think les has left lsu twice now, according to espn and their 'sources'. yet, he's still there.

too bad that meyer had to lie tho, when he said there'd been no offer. guess he went to the saban school of how to answer questions.

at any rate, yes i did laugh when you said there's nowhere better than osu. i can think of plenty of places that are better.

I did not mean nowhere better then OSU. I meant not a better fit for Ohio St then Urban Meyer. Because he wins everywhere he goes, hence he should win at Ohio St. The Big 10 is nothing special and Ohio St has a big time QB who Meyer wanted at FL already in place. The way I phrased it I can see how it was confused for what you said though.

Dahoss 11-28-2011 01:06 PM

The announcement waited until after the weekend because he was attending his fathers funeral this weekend. Had nothing to do with the holidays.

Antitrust32 11-28-2011 02:19 PM

Urban Meyer is a great coach and a very good person. the fucl<eye's are fortunate to get him.

I once thought and said the same about Joe Paterno. Urban may be, but all in life is not what it seems. Paterno was very lacking as a person in many aspects despite not being all evil....I suspect the same of Meyer.

I didn't know this but I doubt they would announce a new coach before your biggest rivalry game. Why undermine and make your current coach a lame duck before Michigan? It would have been an even bigger distraction.

very true Main Course.

I met him and know a former player of his who hold him in an extremely high regard. Meyer is like a military drill sergeant. Not surprised at all that he has health / stress issues. I met him at a one day football camp and he was telling kids that their role models should be their parents, teachers, etc.. not football players or coaches. I respected that message.

Agree. It made sense to do it now. In hindsight it's pretty funny to think about how many times Meyer denied this.

Aside from meeting him once and knowing one former player of his how do you know this to be true?

He could be the greatest guy in the world, but leaving Florida as soon as it got a little tough, while citing health issues, only to comeback less than a year later at a different school seems shady to me.

well the one former player is probably as close to Meyer as Tebow is, so I'll take his word for it.

But, for political correctness. I perceive Urban Meyer to be a very good human being.

I think he really did have health issues, not just bailed on the team because the talent wasnt going to be there. And it's not like he knew Tressel was going to be out at Ohio State when he left Florida. It would be very hard for anyone to pass up the opportunity Meyer got. I can understand while some Florida fans would feel slighted, but Meyer did a TON for the Gator football program.

I still hope Ohio State loses all their games next year.

I guess my point is who knows how these guys really are. Especially now with all that is going on with Penn St and Syracuse. I'm not comparing them, there is no comparison. Just saying we don't really know.

The first time he stepped down last year he cited health issues. The second time he said it was to be around his family more. Apparently the year he spent with them was enough.

its hard to pass up 40 million!

and you're right.. apparantly now a days you can never really know what lies in a person's heart.

He's going to win a ton of games for OSU though.. which sucks.

Very, very true. Although I imagine it's easier to turn it down when you're already a multi millionaire.

Maybe that is what he told his family. "I'd love to see you more, but that 40 million is hard to pass up. See you guys again in a couple of years when Braxton Miller goes to the NFL."

I kid...sort of.

I would think they already know the answer to that. Would Meyer go there if it was up in the air?4

I don't think the NCAA has decided yet. Just a speculation on my part, but if they were not going to be eligible, I doubt Meyer would have taken the job. The whole thing stinks already.

You have to figure they all know the answer to the question already. Why offer 7 years and 40 million and why accept it if the program is going to have those type of issues.

:$: talks....

yeah, who knows? i'd have to think they'll get something-maybe a few scholarships lost, one year no post-season?

and yeah, he'd take the job-there's enough green to make up for no bowl.

for future recruitment. to show they're going with a supposed disciplinarian.

True about the money. The only thing I could find online is Ohio St self imposed a 5 scholarship a year reduction over the next 3 years. The NCAA charged the program with a Failure to Monitor its football program and that a decison on any further sanctions is expected in December.

Everyone thinks they want to spend more time at home with the family. Until they actual do it and realize there is no work to go to and get away from home. Home is daunting, family is great, but not for a guy used to working round the clock, round the calendar. A four day weekend to me feels like a month away from work and I am only 36.

It depends on your job and your home life. A four day weekend feels like 5 minutes away from work for me.
