Cam Newton: The Real Deal?

Was that one of the best performances by a debuting rookie QB ever? No minicamp and limited preseason and he comes in and throws for 400+ on the road while throwing 2 tds and running for 1 more.

I can't remember a better rookie debut for a QB.

horseofcourse 09-11-2011 06:41 PM

Was it really any better than the debut of JeMarcus Russell?

dalakhani 09-11-2011 06:48 PM

Yes, it was.

Who do you remember that had a more impressive rookie debut at QB?

slotdirt 09-11-2011 06:48 PM

But I thought the Arizona defense was going to be a lot better this year?

dalakhani 09-11-2011 06:55 PM

I don't care which defense it was, that was a rookie in an NFL game that threw for 422 2/1 and ran for a td to boot.

Can anyone tell me of a more impressive rookie QB debut? I assume there has been one but my memory isn't that good.

I was joking. I'm guessing the over 400 may be a record for a debut game for sure. Tim Tebow is a religious figure but his wasn't better either. How about that Luc Longley for the Cowboys against the Redskins!! Maybe his name was Clint.

Manning set the previous record with 302 yards.

When you take into account that this guy didn't have Marshall Faulk, Marvin Harrison not to mention a minicamp or much preseason, it was a remarkable performance.

clyde 09-11-2011 07:04 PM

His team lost!!

That's a losers stat.

God.

clyde 09-11-2011 07:13 PM

And, hey---what is it with you and American Negro qb's already?

Steven H. Crist.

The honkey qb is every bit as good if not bettah.

Coach Pants 09-11-2011 07:27 PM

Evil is doing well the past decade. This scumb.ag piece of s.hit will probably be a hall of famer. Hope he gets as.s cancer and his dad gets caught with 3 dicks in his mouth.

I think that is a falsity. Otto Graham threw for 346 yards in his first NFL game and 3 touchdowns and a running TD against the defending NFL champions. BUt perhaps the historical records are incorrect. OF course that is an unfair comparison. He did have Marion Motley at rb. History is a long time dala. The Browns first game in the league is one of the most famous one's ever. You can even look it up. So I did.

His team won..most important qb stat.

horseofcourse 09-11-2011 07:45 PM

That football reference site has all them old time stats on it, so I'm pretty confident the numbers i listed for that 1950 game are correct dala.

she'll probably say all that crap belongs on the cleveland sporty thread and I'm overstepping some bounds or something.

clyde 09-11-2011 08:00 PM

!!!!OOOOOOOOOO!!!!

clyde 09-11-2011 08:00 PM

She hates me; she's a witch.

He had already had four yrs as a pro. Stop trying to be argumentative just to be argumentative.

This was newton's first professional game.

clyde 09-11-2011 09:24 PM

He lost.

HA-HA!

clyde 09-11-2011 09:50 PM

Once again I apologize for my insensitive remarks,DahlaPoo.

Do you have pretty legs?

Love,

Clyde

Dahoss 09-11-2011 11:47 PM

Oh my god.

clyde 09-12-2011 01:16 AM

You woke me up with this, but I did find it highly amusing.

Do you have pretty legs?

clyde 09-12-2011 01:32 AM

Am going back to sleep...only Dahla is allowed to wake me up again.

King Glorious 09-12-2011 05:03 AM

I don't think even his biggest supporters could have seen that coming. In his wildest imagination, Newton himself couldn't have either. Very impressive.

slotdirt 09-12-2011 06:08 AM

One game does not a career make.

Cannon Shell 09-12-2011 10:37 AM

Obviously Newton played great but perhaps he might have tougher sailing against teams that actually decide to cover Steve Smith.

slotdirt 09-12-2011 10:45 AM

Here are some recent first start stat lines for highly drafted quarterbacks:

Akili Smith - 25-42, 221 yards, two TD's (W)
Cade McNown - 17-33, 255 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT (L)
Aaron Rodgers - 18-22, 1 TD, 35 yards rushing, 1 TD (W)
J.P. Losman - 17-28, 170, 1 TD (W)
David Carr - 10-22, 145, 2TD, 1 INT (W)
Patrick Ramsey - 21-43, 320 yards, 1TD, 4 INT, 1 rushing TD (L)
Tony Banks - 10-17, 186, 3 TD, 1 INT (L)
JeMarcus Russell - 23-31, 224, 1 TD, 1 INT (L)
Troy Aikman - 17-35, 180, 2 INT (L)
Matt Leinart - 22-35, 253, 2 TD, 1 INT (L)
Philip Rivers - 8-11, 108, 1 TD (W)

No doubt. I am not saying that he is the next anything. All I am saying is that was the most impressive rookie debut by a QB I have ever seen. 422 yards by a rookie is ridiculous.

Any logical person would have to assume the lack of preparation for the defense played a part. Either way, he was awesome yesterday.

slotdirt 09-12-2011 11:35 AM

Just generally speaking though, how not good did the NFC South look yesterday? I thought they were the best division in football?

But that team still won.

The Browns secondary, usually very attentive fellows.....decided ( up by 3 with less than 5 minutes to go--mind you) to pay no never mind over at Mr. Wide Receiver--AJ Green.

The didn't cover him ...at all.

Nobody home.

Game winning 40 yard td pass to Green.

slotdirt 09-12-2011 12:12 PM

Newton also tied the record for most passing yards by a rookie in any game, tying the record held by...Matthew Stafford. I won't tell clyde against whom Stafford set that record.

clyde 09-12-2011 12:17 PM

Why, I'll bet it was the same team whose first 10 years of existence are pure storybook...you'd think it was scripted out of someone's noodle and made into a Disney movie.

Bet ya.

slotdirt 09-12-2011 12:25 PM

From '50 to '58, the Browns and Lions won a combined six NFL championships. Since? Let's not talk about that.

This was Newtons 13th pro game, I believe.

In the end, it was 2 Tigers (Doucet, and Peterson) that did in Scam and the Panthers. Good fo his azzzzz.

The Lions had great teams in the 50's and probably could have carried through the first half of the 60's if not for the Packers. They always were a big Browns nemesis.

The Brown's...mainly talking about '46 through '55.

Yes..they were still a very good team through the 60's, but not the great team of the 40's and 50's.

Not sure if the story of their first 10 years can be matched by any team in any sport.

This is true---that's all you were saying.

I really enjoy trying to make you viper spitting angry with me.

But you are so good at ignoring me that it really is upsetting.
