What a shame! Wonder what the story is behind this! 24 is just too young an age to depart. Prayers go out to his family and loved ones!

Sightseek 05-10-2011 07:31 PM

I hope they have answers for the family soon.

helicopter11 05-10-2011 08:06 PM

Thats terrible news!! What a great young rider he was and he was only 24. Thoughts go to the family.

trackrat59 05-10-2011 08:09 PM

Very sad! I can't get over this. Only 24 years old. My prayers and thoughts go out to his family and friends. This is awful.

joeydb 05-10-2011 08:15 PM

Very sorry to hear this. Prayers for his family.

philcski 05-10-2011 08:20 PM

Very sad and very strange. He had been doing so well over the past couple years, I hope there's not criminal activity involved...

arizonadave 05-10-2011 09:41 PM

I know when he rode in California, he battled a drug problem. This is so sad.

VOL JACK 05-10-2011 10:17 PM

Sad.

He really looked like the next big thing back in 2007 in So Cal.
I wondered why he lost the mount on Nehro after the LA Derby.

onebadbeast 05-11-2011 12:16 AM

very sad, i know he was no longer with his wife, to sad for words..........

mclem0822 05-11-2011 06:57 AM

Oh how sad......

It hasn't been all that long, that he was riding first call for Wayne Catalano I think? Wow, very sad news condolences to the entire Baze family. :(
Very talented rider, gone way too soon.

randallscott35 05-11-2011 06:58 AM

No foul play suspected.

justindew 05-11-2011 08:09 AM

Tragic. Very sad.

I read a few of the non-racing media articles about this. More than one identifies Baze as "having just ridden Nehro to a 2nd place finish in the Kentucky Derby." In fact, one article make this mistake, and then one paragraph later states he hadn't ridden in a race since April. I mean, is it really THAT hard to get simple facts correct?

Of course, the non-racing media also still refers to any son of Dynaformer as "Barbaro's half-brother."

MaTH716 05-11-2011 08:37 AM

Very very sad news. The kid had his whole life ahead of him, it's a damn shame. Condolences and sympathies go out to his family.

Scav 05-11-2011 01:22 PM

Just did a tribute at Arlington and not a dry eye in place....was a good kid

Riot 05-11-2011 01:37 PM

Wish someone who had seen him not moving in the car had bothered to wander over to the car to check it out in the morning, rather than the afternoon. That really bothers me.

Rootdog1 05-11-2011 01:43 PM

I agree with Riot. Said many saw him in his truck in the morning and they found him after 4pm....what the hell is that?

I worried he overdosed intentionally with the intent to be discovered by parking on the backstretch - but wasn't as nobody could be bothered to walk over to the car.

If it was unintentional, or if there was a sudden medical problem, perhaps his life could have been saved if he wasn't left unconcious in 80-degree heat all day in a car, even though people noticed him there in the morning.

richard 05-11-2011 03:08 PM

A tragedy. My condolences.

satan's twin 05-11-2011 04:12 PM

This is some tough news today. I talked to this kid more than a half dozen times over beers last summer at Jimmy D's, across the street from Arlington Park.

Yet another reminder that every day is a gift and as Warren Zevon said, "Enjoy every sandwich."

Riot 05-11-2011 04:52 PM

Very sad loss of a young life.

Baze was due at a preliminary hearing Thursday after being charged with first-degree possession of cocaine in November.

Jim Wesley, a Jefferson County deputy coroner, said Wednesday preliminary autopsy results found no anatomical cause of death. He says the toxicology reports will take three weeks.

Very tragic. Apparently, he was recently arrested for cocaine possession according to Fox sports. Hope that it was not a drug overdose.

DELL_YOUNT 05-12-2011 12:46 PM

Sad, sad news... Michael Baze quickly became a favorite of mine.
The kid was good. 24 years old ...no more mounts. A terrible, terrible loss.

Patrick333 05-13-2011 03:38 PM

What a shame.

Kasept 06-04-2011 08:02 AM

Recent scientific research has discovered new avenues of treatment by showing conclusively that addiction is a chronic physical disease that attacks the brain, damaging key parts of the limbic system and cerebral cortex.

I have been sober for a little over three years. For me it is a combination of treatment, faith and AA. There are many resources available. Here are a couple of links.

Ditto!

Very thoughtful of you to post the links for those that might want to check them out.

richard burch 06-07-2011 09:53 PM

i remember watching him and talamo coming up together.

baze seemed like he would be a great jockey for a lot of years.

very sorry.

Coach Pants 06-07-2011 10:05 PM

It's easy to romanticize the dead but great jockey? Come on, man. Let him rest in peace but lets not lose perspective.

Coachie Luv I'm not correcting you or anything but here's a story...

There's another board that I haven't even logged onto for literally years but I can remember starting a thread, back when he was riding out here, and it was something like 10 years from now who will be the greatest living jockey and he was my choice.

I thought he'd be one of the greats and that's not looking back cause the poor kid is gone and trying to turn him into something he wasn't... it's just what I thought (I remember others saying Talamo) at the time.

What a ****ing shame.
