Barry Irwin

How about his interview before going into the infield? Was this an F U to Pletcher or what?

I was figuring he was referring to Catalano with that line.

Not related but this line from the article was a classic

"More Derby: Who knows how Larry Collmus, well-regarded Monmouth/Gulfstream race-caller, made out in his first Derby for NBC? With NBC not taking care to lose the in-house call, both calls blended to sound as if the intercom at the Jack In The Box drive-in was beefing with a Beastie Boys CD.'

randallscott35 05-09-2011 12:27 PM

Yeah Larry did fine. Not his fault NBC goofed.

richard burch 05-09-2011 12:40 PM

he is WFAN right now....seems like an angry guy considering he won!

Listen to the dig he gives race tracks at the end of the press conference regarding racing partnerships. Barry is letting the country in on his a$$hole list..

Pletcher must have told him Pluck didn't have a chance in The Arc de Triomphe.

Backlash towards Irwin growing..

Trainers respond to Irwin's comment about lying
By David Grening

Catalano said he called Irwin on Sunday to congratulate him for winning the Derby but also to clarify that those comments weren’t directed toward him. "I know 100 percent it wasn't toward me," Catalano said by phone from Chicago. "I never had a cross word with the guy."

Many New York horsemen were disgusted by Irwin’s nationally televised remarks, but few wanted to go on the record with their comments. Kiaran McLaughlin, who did train briefly for Irwin and Team Valor, was offended by the remark. "I can promise you and anyone else that I never lied to Barry Irwin," McLaughlin said Monday morning at Belmont Park. "And I don’t appreciate that comment for our whole industry, all the trainers that have trained for him – I don’t feel so bad because it’s a large group and obviously we’re not all liars. “It took away from the day and the sport and it was uncalled for,” McLaughlin said. “I was very happy for Graham Motion and Johnny Velazquez.”

phuck him this guy has pitched his swill on partners forever.. Even if you get it and are delivering great result you should be a mensch.. The guy is all that is wrong, between him and John Fort I wanted to throw up..

Sightseek 05-09-2011 07:25 PM

Just when you think (insert name here) is the most unbearable owner to step foot on the track, in walks someone else to claim the crown.

Who knows? Probably couldn't get box seats for all his owners, while Repole took six boxes with two entries, scratched one and kept the seats.

Cannon Shell 05-09-2011 07:56 PM

The funny thing is the guy can't understand why no one likes him

Cannon Shell 05-09-2011 08:04 PM

There is a reason why people dont bend over backwards for the guy. I think you can figure out why...

I mean this is a guy who stood on his soapbox and declared that Team Valor would have a zero tolerance attitude towards drugs...then take a look at the list of trainers he employed AFTER that proclamation.

Mr Irwin has a had a reputation in the past for uh...lying to his trainers about when they were getting paid.

I'll bet they lied to him and he was shocked

I have mixed emotions about this guy's remarks. I absolutely understand, on a personal level, his frustration with disingenuous trainers. Let's not pretend it doesn't exist....a lot! Was it the wrong time and place? Maybe. Probably. But the intention to shed light on a decades old problem to a national audience is somewhat intriguing. He opened himself up to criticism of his alleged business practices.

Back in the day he used to post on the AOL horsey forums.

An ass.

He invited me to the Clubhouse at HP one fine, hot 130 degree summer day. He really does have no filter for what he says. I couldn't believe the things he was saying about Baffert, and Vladimir Syringe. He was bitter about Silver Charm winning the Derby, putting it mildly.

I showed up in a tshirt riddled with holes and blood stains along with a pair of gray gym shorts. I was out of place! :)

Never was invited back, for some reason.

It is something I identify with easily, thus it is easy for me to recognize.

Irwin has always done a good job for his partners. They manage their horses correctly and do a pretty good job picking up nice horses at reasonable prices. There's a reason a group like Team Valor is so successful, it starts w BI. Like or hate the guy he gives his people a good bang for their buck. As a partnership goes they are probably top of the foodchain.

He may come accross like a knowitall, but he's probably seen it all, and I'm sure he's speaking from experience.

There's a LOT of people involved with the sport, just like that! ;) don't dare question them.....they're NEVER wrong!

No one is denying that Irwin does a good job. But humble or likable he is not.

I guess it depends what capacity you know him. I like him, and I like when a guy does well and doesn't mind telling people. There's not enough guys like Irwin running these partnerships. If you put all these partnerships side by side Team Valor lays on the rest of the major groups. Irwin shouldn't be humble, when he deals w his ppl he needs to tell them he's the man. He runs the show and his ppl have been given a wonderful opportunity to be successful in a brutal business. Take Irwin out of the equation all his novice owners take a substantial loss and probably are one and done owners.

When people say you cannot make money in this business it's absolute bullshit. When I have sat these partnership seminars that's how they open " it's fun don't plan on making money" I think that's poor. There's so many idiots doing this stuff anybody with any brains, who truly knows, will turn a profit. Hence Irwins success

Hey IC!

My older sister is moving to Maine. She's the "fuller-figured" member of the family -- want me to hook you up?!?

I hope you're tall though, she's 6 feet tall.

lol.

DrugS exaggerates. The person is what is important to me. Though, I gotta say, I do like tall chicks.

Why is she moving to Maine, and where? If you ever go visit her, let me know. Believe it or not, Maine is a great state for foodies.
