NBC

Am i the only one who couldn't hear a f'n thing with the race call?

why do we have to have 2 announcers shouting over each other?

same thing happened last year so you think they could have figured this out.

Arletta 05-07-2011 06:14 PM

Good question.. why can't they just let the damn track announcer call the race?

Very distracting.

i was in hi-def and it was 100% in-audible. (if thats a word)

booner 05-07-2011 06:18 PM

It's not all bad. At least they showed the Woodford this year. Gotta count for something.

Serb Man 05-07-2011 06:31 PM

NBC, Larry Collmus

well I can't blame collmus because i couldn't even hear him. sounds like johnson yells over him becaused he's pissed off that he didn't get the prime time call.

:tro: about time they showed it

OldDog 05-07-2011 07:19 PM

All in all I think the Versus coverage beat the NBC coverage. Less fluff and more pertinent race coverage and interviews. NBC tried to pander to the masses.

fpsoxfan 05-07-2011 07:23 PM

Great job. Great stories. Race call was fine. Had a great time!

Same for me. I've never had this problem with NBC before. It's not like we don't want to hear the roar, but they need to get better control of the sound mix.

just curious, what cable system are you on?

smartbid09 05-07-2011 07:40 PM

NBC really did an excellent job of covering the Kentucky Derby this year in my opinion. I agree that the Kentucky Derby call was hindered by the background call competing with it - however I have to say that this was a wonderful presentation of the greatest sport on earth!

I wish they had not shown the horses that broke down during Rosies segment - I really hope they only showed it because the horses survived - if not it would be very wrong as the last thing our sport needs is another Eight Belles or Barbaro incident. That said I am glad that they didn't really linger on the injury of Arch Arch Arch! I am praying he is okay. I am sure we all are.

NBC looks to have a bright future covering the triple crown. I look forward to their presentation at Pimlico! It should be awesome!

I also thought he overall show was OK which makes it even worse.

the stories are fine but we tuned in to watch the race and they blew it. (again) i still have last years race on my DVR and you can hear johnson over durkin. with todays technology you would think they could get this right.

kp319 05-08-2011 06:15 AM

Bob Costas should be put down. KP

JJP 05-08-2011 07:37 AM

I never got to see the Woodford Reserve. Was it on Versus?

Lava 05-08-2011 07:39 AM

it was on nbc

herkhorse 05-08-2011 07:42 AM

The double race call on NBC was atrocious.

JohnGalt1 05-08-2011 08:10 AM

I thought Gary Stevens did a great job analyzing the Derby using the many replays about the trips of Animal Kingom, Archarcharch and Dialed In.

I still hate the multiple angles during the race. Save them for the replays.

Can't say I could really blame either as they were both doing their jobs. I've heard Johnson's version on twinspires and thought he had a great call. I agree with Laura, just let the track announcer do it.

PatCummings 05-08-2011 10:01 AM

Don't know what some people's issue with the call was, but I heard it just fine on NBC-HD.

As for those complaining NBC is pandering to the masses...of course they are and they should. And if you don't agree, well, you're wrong.

Same here, nbc-hd. I could barely hear MJ's call in the background, LC sounded fine.

Not sure what you mean about the masses, though. Were we suppose to vote or something?

jms62 05-08-2011 10:16 AM

They really need to Mute the crowd noise during the race... Let the crowd noise in for the first 10 seconds or so and then mute it and let us hear the call. This is an ongoing issue with the derby. I can never hear the call no matter how high I put the volume and my hearing is just fine.

somerfrost 05-08-2011 10:30 AM

It was ok on my TV, I really would enjoy watching the race at the OTW with my friends but there you can't hear anything cause you have a couple hundred once a year fans screaming for a horse running next to last...I thought overall NBC did a good job (as did Versus with undercard), at least I can sit in my chair and watch the race without going deaf!

booner 05-08-2011 12:07 PM

Overall, this year's coverage was better than in year's past. My wife follows horse racing a little and always watches on the "big days". Her assessment:

1) Laffitt Pincay Jr. was a good addition. She likes his demeanor and analysis.
2) She thought there was a good balance of the background stories of the the Derby contenders and coverage of all the other races. Not too much of one or the other.
3) She was really interested in Gary Steven's post race analysis. She got to see different views of the race and learned some stuff.

All in all, she gave it a big thumbs up. As a matter of fact, she even sat down and watched the post-race report on VS before the Preds game. This was the most interest I've seen her show from beginning to end on Derby Day in....well, ever.

herkhorse 05-08-2011 09:02 PM

No one mentioned the NFL style jockey intro's. That was my favorite part.

Heels1989 05-08-2011 09:29 PM

Speaking of jocks, one of the funny post race interviews occurred with Nakatani following his win on Regally Ready. He referred to the Asumessn operation as "well endowed". :D

slotdirt 05-08-2011 09:46 PM

Versus literally showed every race from race 2 through 4:00 on Saturday. Can't complain with the coverage NBC is giving horse racing, particularly with the massive amount of advertising they're doing during the NHL playoffs, etc.

On the national front, however, overnight ratings for this year’s Derby broadcast on NBC-TV declined 7 percent compared with the 2010 show, according to NBC, despite aggressive promotional efforts by the network and its family of channels. The overnight rating for the race segment, from 6 p.m. Eastern to 7 p.m. Eastern, was a 9.7, with a 22 share, down from a 10.4 overnight rating last year. The overall rating for the three-hour broadcast was a 7.4, with a 17 share. Final ratings will be released Tuesday, NBC said.

Yeah, it was generally accepted that it would drop this year, especially after Uncle Mo was declared...lack of star power. I don't think it helped much that virtually all the preps were ignored either.
