Hollywood takes out half-page ad for Zenyatta's HOTY candidacy

The Indomitable DrugS 12-10-2010 04:22 PM

Yes - the Breeders Cup Classic does not determine Horse of the Year ... but I suppose beating Dance To My Tune, Taptam, St. Trinians, Rinterval, and Switch does?

TouchOfGrey 12-10-2010 04:28 PM

Was it only a year ago they were saying that the Classic winner should be HOTY? :zz:

jimmy the T 12-10-2010 04:28 PM

she made that track and the other cali tracks a ton of money. they should all give a full page at least

gaut10 12-10-2010 04:41 PM

the ntra should take note and do more marketing for the game in general.

The Indomitable DrugS 12-10-2010 04:52 PM

Remember when Borislow was running all of those ads in the DRF for Toccet to be named champion 2yo?

brianwspencer 12-10-2010 05:01 PM

Oh my lord.

If they wanted more bang for the buck, they should have taken some undecided turf writers to dinner.

Maybe Hollywood should take some of their advertising budget and spend money on some type of on-track incentives that would increase their attendance.

Alan07 12-10-2010 05:49 PM

They just cost her a few votes.

It won't matter. She is going to win.

And they might have trouble soon:

Do you think Ann is jealous that someone else is blowing Jerry? I figure she is saying "better you then me"

Completely agree.

Take a look at this...Go to document page 16...http://www.ntra.com/images/NTRA_2010_Annual_Report.pdf

I have never seen any of this utilized other than on tvg and hrtv. Wow, thats innovative...market only to people who are already in the game.

Part of the problem is that horse racing, like boxing is generally a sport of those born before 1980 unless you grew up around it or have those close to you involved. unfortunately, most younger people are interested in MMA and other American sports.

My personal experience has been that most younger than 30 have no interest in traditional sports like baseball, boxing or horse racing. More has to be done to attract "fans" to not only the track, but the sport in general. The NTRA should allocate more funds for marketing. NTRA.com is awful and not updated. TVG did all the marketing for the BC.

NTRA does little to promote its stars both active and retired. For casual fans, the horses race then they retire. They have no clue about the breeding aspect of the game.

Recently, EVD had its most prestigious qh futurity (560k). There was absolutely nothing done by the local media, EVD, or the AQHA. EVD didnt even mention it on its website, yet the track was packed with people.

The entire thing is getting old, BUT....The day she beat Taptam, who was she supposed to beat? Who did not show?

You wonder why they can't market and grow the sport...check out the freakin balance sheet/income statement info.

The SAFETY ALLIANCE generated $328,000 in revenue but COST $638,000 in expenses associated with the program and racing integrity. Assets dropped, from 2008 to 2009, by 45% and expenses dropped 47%...however, revenues from TV in 2009 were a meet $219,000 as opposed to $1.9 million in expenses. Even worse, the general and administrative expenses stayed just about the same over both years...so as their assets dropped off a roof, and some expenses were cut, it looks like they kept everyone on and just paid em the same...definitely the way to make a company work (even if non-profit)

FTFY.

I think they're using Zenyatta because they want press for Hollywood Park, not because they think it will influence the votes. They love Zenyatta, the people seeing the ad (including everyone here, I presume) love Zenyatta or will if they bother to find out anything about her. It takes advantage of the warm fuzzies the same way a studio's Oscar campaign does. It isn't just to promote a film, it's to show everyone they had a big deal movie because they're a big deal studio and we can count on seeing great movies when this studio is involved (in the end increasing their $$). Hollywood Park may not be in immediate danger because the economy's a mess, but I don't blame it for taking advantage of PR opportunities where it finds them. I think they could've done it without throwing in the thing about the Classic, but whatever.

There are a few voters publicly stating that they're flip flopping, but I think most are sure of how they're going to go. I also think many of the Blame HOTY supporters are simply refusing to draw the ire they expect to come their way if they "come out". I love Z, she's a stunner in a million different ways and I'd turn into a total groupie if I got to see her in KY. I just read the writing on the wall here. I don't expect her to get the award. If she does, I'm pretty sure she won't care because she can't eat it. The fun part is gonna be when Rachel and Zenyatta go up for the Hall of Fame at the same time. I just hope poor Sky Beauty gets in before she has to deal with being overshadowed by these two ladies.

i agree. what are they supposed to say....."she lost the BC classic and does not deserve it." who cares????????????????

randallscott35 12-11-2010 08:17 AM

The better question is should a track be doing stuff like this?

Coach Pants 12-11-2010 08:22 AM

A f.ucking award...

The sport is doomed.

If one of the voters is swayed by a 1/2 page ad that Hollywood Park puts out...they shouldn't have a vote. The ad just gives goobers something to talk about.

That did not answer my question. To me a track shouldn't be doing things like this. IMO

You're absolutely right. What the hell does Hollywood gain by doing this? It's sour grapes from an organization that can certainly spend their money, even if the amount is considered infinitessimal by a racetrack's standards.

Danzig 12-11-2010 08:54 AM

i'd rather tracks spent their ad money trying to build the sport.

she should have been running in open company against better than the likes of taptam. she should have run an hoy campaign, like blame did. like rachel did. if you have to beg for votes, just how big a HOY are you?
if miss lizzie sue ran in the five races zenyatta ran in, won, and then was suggested as being hoy material, you'd be jumping down their throat.

blackthroatedwind 12-11-2010 09:01 AM

Since Vic so generously told everyone how much he made last year, and we all know how much happiness Zenyatta brought to Vic, I think he should take out a full page ad.

Maybe in the ad he can also tell even more people his 2010 earnings as well.

That wasn't what I made last year. That's just the Rosario portion. Thanks for taking something I was trying to share from my heart and belittling it. Inspires me to continue to share things.

Oh, you shared your $260K, now part, income to be kind to the little folk. How could I have missed that?

Vic, the disingenuous act isn't fooling anyone. If you actually think " sharing " your income, especially when PART of it is over a quarter of a million dollars, is a way of interacting with others, then I suggest you use your now self-imposed free time to do a little soul searching. Personally, and I've been wrong before, I think you know exactly what you did, and now we can use this as definitive proof that your " interacting with the little people " has been exactly the act that most, if not all, have always taken it for.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion. My opinion is that you speak about me personally and don't know me. That's cool. Part of the internet experience.

Actually, until you wrote that post about your income, I had JUST told Byk that you seemed like a good guy with a good sense of humor.

Go ahead....ask him.

The post wasn't about my income. It was trying to explain why I chose to make changes in my life. DRF reported that I had resigned from Tyler Baze. Some people wondered why. I chose to share. I'd write more but I gotta get BYK on the phone. I'm not going on with my day until he tells me I'm OK with you.

Like I said.....you now have the free time to figure this one out. I'll hope for the best for you.
