Trivia

Not exactly a tough one ... but this speed ball took 7 out of his first 8 with the only defeat leading to a layoff line.

Name him.

Correct.

Speaking of horses who were dangerous on loose leads ... this guy blew a 6 length first call lead going just 5 furlongs at the tail end of a 0-for-100 career.

Name him.

Yeah - are the people at Thistle Downs the only ones who weren't down with throwing their money away?

I like how he got the majority of the year off to hone in on that New Hampshire meet every season.

I'd love to see the field he was in against when he popped the gate and hung a 6 length lead on them.

That really has the look of a manufactored race.

The Indomitable DrugS 11-27-2010 09:51 PM

Very good two-surface sprinter.

Name him.

RolloTomasi 11-27-2010 10:00 PM

Possibly Full Moon Madness.

Correct.

Believe it or not - this well bred slug below has sired at least 11 stakes winners and two Graded Stakes winners. One of them ran at Churchill Downs on Friday. His runners have earned over $11 million.

Name him.

Tortuga Flats?

Dahoss 11-27-2010 10:50 PM

Might be tough for Tortuga Flats to sire anyone, unless she had a sex change. Are they doing that on horses now?

Not only would a sex change be in order, but she'd need a time machine to run in races run nearly a decade before she was born.

The Indomitable DrugS 11-28-2010 12:36 AM

It's Wheaton. He was sired by Alydar and a half brother to Storm Cat.

Santana Strings was the Graded Stakes winning horse he sired who ran friday at Churchill Downs.

What a bad race horse he was. I'm surprised they even attempted to make him a sire.

Might be King Cugat

KirisClown 11-28-2010 11:09 AM

Yup.. it's King Cugat. he was sent off favored in all but three of his career starts..

KirisClown 11-28-2010 11:20 AM

A talented NY bred.. he once came close to beating Langfuhr in the Carter. He finished his career running for 7500 on the Aqueduct inner.

Hollywood Derby Trivia

1) This filly beat the boys in the '83 Hollywood Derby. A course specialist, the following year she won the Beverly Hills, Inglewood (vs. colts), Matriarch, and BC Mile all at Hollywood Park. Name her.

2) This gelding chased Tight Spot all summer before just getting tagged by Royal Academy in the BC Mile. However, off the strength of late season wins in both the Hollywood Derby and Hollywood Turf Cup, he was able to earn champion turf horse. Name him.

3) The 1-2 finishers in the '92 Hollywood Derby were future stars in the national turf ranks. Both horses eventually placed in runnings of the BC Turf. One in '93, the other in '94. Name them.

4) Explosive Red was a front-running grass horse for Frank Stronach who took the Hollywood Derby in '93. However, his half-brother, by Chief's Crown, was more famous, earning the turf Eclipse by winning the BC Turf, coincidentally, run at Hollywood Park. Name him.

5) This horse was 3rd in the '01 Hollywood Derby. 2 years later, he was sprint champion. Name him.

6) In 1995, these two horses ran 1st and 3rd respectively, in the Hollywood Derby. Improbably, they hooked up again 3 years later in '98 in the BC Mile at CD. They reversed placings this time with the winner completing a phenomenal comeback and ruining his rival's unbeaten '98 record and bid for champion turf horse. Name both.

Yep, but just for clarification, Paradise Creek won that Hollywood Derby (he was coming off good 2nd as part of the field behind Lure's first BC Mile). Bien Bien had spent most of the summer getting thrashed in dirt races (Travers, Super Derby), having somehow won a very weak renewal of the Swaps. He actually won the Hollywood Turf Cup in his next start over recent BC Turf winner Fraise (I think there was a DQ or something in there).

I'm confused....wasn't the last BC at Hollywood in 1987? How could Chief's Crown have sired a winner of a BC there?

Dahoss 11-28-2010 11:49 AM

5 was trained by Frankel, but I can't remember his name.

It was there in 1997 also.

RolloTomasi 11-28-2010 11:50 AM

The last one is fairly simple. He was coming from Europe (I think he ran once or twice at Belmont before this race), along with stablemate Denon (the winner), in that race.

blackthroatedwind 11-28-2010 11:51 AM

5. I know Aldebaran was Sprint Champ in 2003....but I didn't realize he was 3rd in the Hollywood Derby.

Pathetic. How could you not remember Countess Diana burying Career Collection? Favorite Trick holding off Nationalore? Skip Away pummeling Dowty and Whiskey Wisdom? Elmhurst tagging Hesabull?

Are you even a fan of this sport?
