60 Minutes Overtime

Here's a LINK to the backstory behind tonight's 60 Minutes story on Zenyatta. The Zenyatta lovers will enjoy this, those that dislike her connectionS and fans can scoff, but it looks like there are now two more non-horse racing fans who have been enchanted by the Queen :D

Merlinsky 10-31-2010 04:49 PM

Can we blame Michelle Boniface for the historical perspective that led to the "greatest filly of all time" designation? Or did the CBS producers opt for that?

We need a drinking game. Every time they call her the greatest (including ads for the show) do a shot. When they show footage of her dancing, drink. When someone goes to snuggle with Zenyatta or kisses her on the nose, keep drinking til they stop. If anybody implies or expressly states she might be greater than Secretariat, drink everything you've got.

I want to watch and enjoy Zenyatta, but I'm concerned about the risk of diabetic coma. Might need to tape it, then watch after the Classic. If she wins, it makes the piece feel less saccharine. If she loses, it's bittersweet but still great that racing got the press.

19 for 19 is a pretty great feat obviously.....But why is it that you never hear about the time of the races that she ran ? Does time only count when your in jail ? Or is it people just have no clue that she for the most part beat slugs just about every race she ran in.
I am kind of puzzled as to why none of the people that do storys about her, never mention this.
To be mentioned in the same breath as Secretariat is pretty F up. It certainly makes me want to root against her next week......

Sightseek 10-31-2010 05:38 PM

If Mike Smith says that she is the greatest he ever rode, Holy Bull should be allowed to kick him in the head.

Why? What would that do? That would be like kicking a broken clock that's missing it's internal mechanisms and expecting it to work.

trackrat59 10-31-2010 06:33 PM

If Mike Smith says Zen is the greatest horse of all time, that makes HIM the jockey that rode the good majority of the races won by the "greatest horse of all time". It would be cool beans to be known as the jockey who rode the greatest horse of all time.

When Mikey gets tired of riding, politics might work well for him.

Coach Pants 10-31-2010 06:57 PM

Well there are plenty of drunks in politics.

hoovesupsideyourhead 10-31-2010 07:28 PM

Yes. This is a very important point to focus on while this man trained Zenyatta for the 2009 and now, the 2010 Classic, under everyone's noses.

It was a 14 minute segment sir. If your teeth look like the color of baked beans, you need to put forth an effort. I'm keeping it real.

Better than Secretariat? He didn't REALLY say yes, but close.

dalakhani 10-31-2010 10:27 PM

Vic doesn't get a mention yet in this thread?

chucklestheclown 10-31-2010 10:29 PM

His talking voice is much different than his calling voice.

DerbyCat 10-31-2010 10:52 PM

I thought it was a rather superficial look at Zenyatta. Everyone they interviewed tried to articulate how amazing Zenyatta is in person but it came across as goofy. You have to experience her in person, she has a presence that can not truly be described. From my experience I have found her to be curious, intelligent, completely aware of her surroundings and amazingly gentle for such a large animal.

Comparing her to Secretariat is not fair, saying she is the greatest thoroughbred of all time is not fair, but saying she is one of the best mares to race and entertain racing fans in recent memory is reasonable in my opinion.

I do think Mike Smith was right about one thing - I think she does have at least one more gear that we haven't seen yet. I think she does enough to win and will do just enough to win on Saturday.

pucknut 11-01-2010 06:44 AM

it was a puff piece with jouralistic integrity checked at the door
i love that 60 minutes bills itself as investigative journalism
for a minute there i thought i was watching entertainment tonight
absolutely no texture or touch for the game or the back story
watching Z drink a guiness was cool i was however disappointed it was not from a nitro can but that bogus bottle crap

Other than Mike Smith's unapologetic declaration about her being the greatest horse ever should she win the Classic - better than Secretariat, blah, blah, blah, I didn't find it so bad. It was indeed a puff piece geared to the unwashed masses of non-racing fans. It might draw a few people into the sport. Emphasis on the word "might".

Despite John Sherriff's less than white teeth (maybe it's from his share of Guinnes Stout), I like him. He loves his charge and isn't afraid to get all gushy about her. I find nothing wrong with that. I did kind of smile when Mike Smith said through misting eyes that no stallion was worthy of her.

C'mon folks, lighten up. It's hype, and it's only the beginning should she win the Classic. Get used to it or just tune off everything horseracing, because 99% of it will be slathering over Zenyatta until well after the Eclipse Awards.

Amen.

Fearless Leader 11-01-2010 10:56 AM

Does anyone seriously believe she has any chance of running down Quality Road ? Come back from Fantasyland.

Until the races are run, all races are Fantasyland. But, to answer your question - YES, I do believe she can run down QR. So far, he hasn't fared well at 10 furlongs.

The nice part about Fantasyland is that we eventually get back to reality - well, some do, some don't. Next week this time, it'll be backpeddling by a lot of people who think their picks had a lock.

All a matter of perspective. I'm certain the Zenyatta fans thought it was just wunerful. Another racing forum has not one negative thing to say about the show. Go figure!

After laboring through Secretariat without walking out of the theater, I can pretty much sit through any flavor KOOL-AID the TB industry/media/and entertainment shows choose to heap on the masses.

hoovesupsideyourhead 11-01-2010 01:14 PM

tvg has changed its name to TVZ..its really ugly..NOT 1 OF THOSE CLOWNS CLOULD SAY THAT 'THE QUEEN' MIGHT GET BEAT...buy your zenyatta bc package t shirt and hat..barf..

Actually no, a couple heavy duty 'will pound you into silly putty if you disparage the queen' people I follow on Twitter hated it. They thought it made everybody sound silly and was too puffy. They said Zenyatta deserved a harder hitting analysis because it just felt like a yes-piece (as in a 'yes man'). I think they figured it overdid it, and people wouldn't fully appreciate her awesomeness because it didn't seem real. So a Zenyatta fan bit into that 60 Minutes cream-filled donut and said 'my God, that's too rich' apparently.

Actually, yes... I said another forum didn't have a negative word about it - not EVERY forum or every person - Zenyatta fan or no.

You said "I'm certain the Zenyatta fans thought it was just wunerful." Not all of them did, and it occurred to me to share the ones I knew of because they instantly came to mind. I don't care what forum you're thinking about in your head, I wasn't referring to whoever those people are. I spoke to my own experience and referred to two people I thought would have thought the special was God's gift to television. They didn't. I don't really care if Forum X has nothing but sugary things to say about Zenyatta. I'm not a member of said forum I'm sure, so why do I care?

I should have used a dash instead of a period between my 2 sentences. I can only base what I think upon my personal observations and communciations. I have yet to collect a comment from all Zenyatta fans.

Why should you care what other people say elsewhere? I don't care if you care. But, it is refreshing to know that there are at least two Zenyatta fans who can remain objective about the hyperbole. :wf
