The $4.5 billion Senate bill would expand eligibility for school meal programs, establish nutrition standards for all food sold in schools and provide a 6-cent increase for each school lunch to help cafeterias serve healthier meals. The $8 billion House version includes more money for expanding access to school lunches for children in low-income households.

How could anyone be in favor of cutting food stamps to the poor to feed the children of the rich? Or is it the menu selected by and control of the government that is the appeal? And if we're really going to try and trim down the children why don't we just suspend bus service to anyone deemed unfit and make them walk? We would not only save the child but the money to transport and the carbon wasted hauling the overweight kid around. But that would be too simple.

I expected exactly what we are getting. A President who supports building the mosque despite who it offends but doesn't support a State who is willing to do the Fed's job and enforce immigration laws because of who it may offend.

Geez couldn't someone have told him to say 'while the U.S. constitution ensures Muslms the right to build a mosque on private property I would suggest they be more sensitive to the families of 911 victims and not build near ground zero.' I know he doesn't have it in him but in this case perhaps he should have brought out the teleprompter he's so fond of and read it.

Simply dropping money out of airplanes is better stimulus than food stamps. The govt reimbursing stores for food that they paid farmers to produce isnt really stimulus, it is subsidy.

Well of course it is, but as far as social services that help the poor -- it's great stimulus, which is what I meant and what I should've said.

If you're of the mind that the govt. helping the poor eat is a bad idea altogether, then surely they're a bad idea -- but if we're providing social services to poor people, then food stamps are excellent as it provides food, helps local businesses, and goes back to those providing and shipping the food. It's a very solid social service program.

Don't confuse social services with stimulus. Putting comments like the bolded are petty. I didn't say that food stamp programs arent worthy causes. But as stimulus they are hardly of any value as the cost of the social programs far outweighs the stimulitive effect. It doesn't create sustainable growth or industry, it simply subsidizes what is already there. Once the food stamps are taken away or as in this case cut, what happens to the businesses supposedly helped?

The food providers are in most cases already getting paid by the govt, in many cases to not produce food.

It's not meant to be petty at all -- there are people (maybe not YOU, but a generic "you") who think that all social welfare of any kind is wasteful and that people are lazy, should get jobs instead of playing Xbox all day (like that's what they're doing anyway), etc, etc.

It's not petty, and perfectly important to point out that if anyone is of the mind that all social welfare of any kind is wasteful, then of course they're bad ideas. Not meant as a dig at you -- those people are out there, and they're here on this board too, as we've seen a million times.

You're arguing a case that I'm not really making, but I may be making myself rather unclear. Naturally lots of government provided programs like that are not actually "sustainable" and "stimulative," but given the other ways that our government does hand out cash to people, food stamps are actually good and help the economy. In helping people afford to eat, that money gets put back into circulation and has an effect long past the person eating food.

Stimulus in an economic sense:

•Economic aid granted by a government to citizens and/or industry to try and spur growth within the economy.

Food stamps dont spur growth.

And "if" is not usually taken to be a condemnation.

Which was a rather reasonable thing to ask, considering the kinds of things that get said around here about helping the poor by some other people.

So "if" you're of the mind that govt. helping poor people at is a bad idea is what I said.

Apparently you're not, so that portion no longer applies to you. No need to get all defensive about it and call a completely reasonable "if" "petty."

I only think its okay to a certain extent. its way to easy for fraud situations and it should only be offered for a minimal amount of time to help people back on their feet.

I think it's wrong to cut food stamp money. I think fruit and veggies for snacks for kids in school is great. Better than the soda and candy and McDonalds' crap in some schools now.
