INTERACTIF declares getting BACKTALK (Miguel Mena rides) in; ENDORSEMENT worked well but exited work with a non-displaced fracture of his right front putting MAKE MUSIC FOR ME into the Derby...

Joel Rosario on MAKE MUSIC FOR ME... Robby Albarado picks up DEAN'S KITTEN...

Draw at noon...

Monarchos1 04-28-2010 08:46 AM

From Twitter.com/DerbyContenders: Confirmation that Endorsement is out of the #KyDerby with a fractured front leg.

FATPIANO 04-28-2010 08:47 AM

Endorsement injured and out of Derby

Who is next in line to get in? Pleasant prince?

Coach Pants 04-28-2010 08:49 AM

I don't know let me make another thread announcing this.

Gate Dancer 04-28-2010 08:49 AM

Just like the barn said, "everything is fine."

slotdirt 04-28-2010 08:52 AM

WTF? The horse was obviously having some issues - why even bother working him this morning, to make certain he had an issue?

slotdirt 04-28-2010 08:53 AM

Make Music for Me blows. That is all. Too bad we can't get a few more defections betwixt now and draw time.

tector 04-28-2010 08:57 AM

So the field becomes more mediocre by the minute. At least Endorsement had a quality win to his name.

slotdirt 04-28-2010 09:01 AM

Endorsement had the highest last out Beyer. This field is epically bad when compared to previous generations of 3YO's. Only three horses - one a filly - will come into the Derby with a highest lifetime BSF of above 100. That is absolutely unprecedented and brutally slow.

Why would Make Music for Me be considered here? What about his 3YO season shows that he'll be capable of going 10f on DIRT this Saturday? The American Turf seems a better spot to be frank.

cloud_break 04-28-2010 09:02 AM

Draw at 12 noon

Might be a stupid question, but is this televised??

ninetoone 04-28-2010 09:02 AM

Setsuko should be in this race...he's getting boned.

slotdirt 04-28-2010 09:05 AM

Hopefully, Setsuko not being among the entries will ensure a change in the graded earnings system for next year's Derby. Count the horses in this field that have zero graded stakes earnings during their 3YO seasons:

Homeboykris
Make Music for Me

Who am I missing?

Saying it over and over won't ensure a change in the earnings system.

Seems like there are a few others in the Derby field who probably would be a better fit for The American Turf also. Why question just Make Music for Me's connections?

If they didn't change the rules after horses like Sunday Break, Rock Hard Ten and Unshaded were excluded from the Derby, do you really think they are going to do it because of Setsuko?

slotdirt 04-28-2010 09:09 AM

Obviously, me saying the graded earnings system is broken isn't going to change anything, but that doesn't mean I'm not right on this one.

Find me the horses in those three years with zero graded earnings as 3YO's and then let's discuss. Seriously, we're talking about two horses who, at least in Homeboykris's case, haven't lifted a hoof on the track since like November.

Besides, Rock Hard Ten had his chance two weeks later in the Preakness, and how did that go? Hindsight is always 20/20.

Off the top of my head, action this day and birdstone came into the derby having had dreadful springs. If they had any graded earnings as three year olds, I would be surprised.

slotdirt 04-28-2010 09:31 AM

Good points on Birdstone and Action this Day. That being said, I'm still with Watchmaker on this one: turf, synthetic, and filly restricted earnings shouldn't count towards entry into the biggest DIRT race on the planet.

Alan07 04-28-2010 09:37 AM

www.NBCSports.com will also cover the draw live.

slotdirt 04-28-2010 09:39 AM

The only thing I'd add on the earnings system is that Rock Hard Ten had exactly one on-the-board finish in a graded race to this point of his career - a 3rd (DQ'd from second) in the SA Derby. Setsuko's already finished second in two of the bigger SoCal preps for the Derby. Similarly, Sunday Break had a third in the Wood coming into the Derby - again, Setsuko had superior credentials.

Well that would only take out every race of importance for a 3-year-old in the West. What's next, leaving out Delta because their track is too small?

Raise the purses in SoCal.

Isn't Santa Anita considering a switch back to real dirt anyway? Eliminating synthetics would get rid of worthless graded earnings from awful races like the El Camino Real, the Lane's End, and the Blue Grass. Aside from Hard Spun, what worthwhile Derby entrant in the synthetics era earned their entry card in any of those three races and then went on to actually run well at Churchill?

For fillies, I think they should have a minimum requirement of non-restricted graded earnings ($60K maybe), so they at least have some previous experience to prove they belong in the race.

As far as Endorsement being out, I'm kind of glad. It's a horse I've liked the past month, and have been on the fence about in recent days.

Couldn't you say the same thing about races like the Wood Memorial, Louisiana Derby and Illinois Derby?

Add a horse like Sea Hero to that list. He did have a 4th in the Blue Grass.

And Setsuko would be afforded the same opportunity. Rather, his connections are opting for a $175K turf race??

Thunder Gulch 04-28-2010 10:34 AM

Don't throw out any particular race or races, but come up with some weighted average to account for 2yo vs 3yo, sprint vs route, dirt vs others, fillies vs colts. I'm sure the the dirt vs synthetic argument would draw the most heat, but it should be accounted for somewhere.

slotdirt 04-28-2010 10:35 AM

Well, they already shipped to CD, so why not run? Would seem to be a worthless trip otherwise, no?

Does Ramsay not enter Dean's Kitten so Pleasant Prince can run?

He did not. According to what Ramsey told Haskin, despite knowing he has a better chance at any success in the race at all by running Pleasant Prince, Ramsey prefers to try to get more exposure for Kitten's Joy as a sire. It is funny it turned out this way with him having the option...

Draw starting in 3 minutes at 12:04p...

What exposure do you get running up the track in the Derby?

This is Ken Ramsey we are talking about. Don't confuse money for horse sense.
