The big and shiny all about the Olympics thread

Yeah yeah, I know this should probably be in sports but whatever. Lets talk about the Olympics!

Which events do you all like?

I always let others go first. Hell this time I'll start!

Anything with Apollo.

Luge or any other event whereas participants lay on their backs.

Bobsled! (No you sick people, not for the crashes. It's cool).

Skating but only individual events. Will lapse into a coma if forced to watch pairs and God help us NO dancing (unless Americas Best Dance Crew-type of dancing is ever given green light fuhgettaboutit).

Ski Jumping or whatever real name is.

Downhill.

Snowboarding. (Shaun White!)

I think that's it.

Cannot understand...

Slalom. The event itself isn't completely boring but I feel like i have a speech impediment every time i say it. Either that or I've taken too many Xanax or something.

Curling which for some reason always makes me think of 3 things...

1. Is this some kinda joke? I mean really, is it?

2. the outer ring of the 7th circle of Dantes Inferno. I know, I know... this might not make sense to some but I'll bet it does to one or two of you.

3. The 2006 TBN Curling team (you know who you are). ;) It was different when we reinvented it, n'est ce pas? ***

*** It's a good thing Vic doesn't look down here or Andy would have to explain it.

Biathlon. One word. Huh?

Okay so please share... what do you like? Hate? Will there be special Olympic Scavatars available and yes the word combination of Special and olympics was an accident...

Who is excited? Who couldn't care less?

Who roots for the USA only? Who roots for teams based on cuteness or a pathetic number of athletes or for any other weird reason?

Anyone?

I hate anything to do with winter. :D (Except Christmas Carols)

Actually, I can never watch sporting events of any kind because I'm thinking to myself that I should get off my lazy butt and do something myself.

i'm into the bobsled. the team has it's first chance at gold in 50 years! thanks in part to the Bo-dyn sled project.
http://www.bodynbobsled.com/

i also like the cross-country skiing events. especially the biathlon. what kind of condition do you have to be in to ski, then stop and shoot targets in 3 different intervals?

ArlJim78 02-03-2010 03:56 PM

I'll watch most of the events, but my favorite by far is ski jumping. I like to try to guess the distance just by watching the takeoff. After you watch a bunch of them you can start to get a feel for it.

next would be the downhill and also both types of speed skating. especially that short track version where they whip around. its kind of like horse racing, you have closers and speed types, drafting, strategy, inside and outside lanes, they can get boxed in, photo finishes and sometimes there are fantastic wipeouts and guys that DNF.

Should I add us to the retirements thread?

Danzig 02-03-2010 06:48 PM

i hate that the nhl is on hold for two weeks while the olympics are going on. too bad!
i don't enjoy figure skating, something my mother always tuned into-i don't think any 'sport' that's judged should be included. but then, i always thought skating would be much improved if they threw in a random check once in a while-now that i would watch!

On a somewhat related topic, Vancouver is on the short list of places I have never visited, but would like to someday. I hear it's beautiful there.

My Country needs another Eddie the Eagle Edwards. Any other old people remember him

:D

great place - so is Whistler -pity i only visited it in the Summer.

I love the Winter Olympics more than Summer games. I think Ski Jumping is one of the best sports to watch, it is simply sensational. Hoping Janne Ahonen wins it. Will also be glued to the Curling, Skeleton Luge, Bobsleigh, pretty much all the skiing events etc etc..

Unlucky Janne, only 4th in the Normal jump - you've a better chance on the large hill next week..

9th and 45th place finishes. 9th is the best finish ever. USA has never won any kind of medal in biathlon.

brockguy 02-14-2010 03:01 PM

Biathlon is a ridiculously tough event..

I see the USA are having a very eh competitive game in Women's Ice Hockey against China :)

That was an exciting race. Kind of fun when guys get head starts (based on their ski jump) and others have to run them down from behind.
