Fanny Freud...interesting. Never seen John Terranova start a horse out in California, have you?

Makes sense that he maybe should do this more often seeing him and his wife are best friends with the Bafferts.

Thoughts? Is he good enough?

She.. Apparently is working great. Baffert has indeed been handling.

It's a terrific field though.

Why does Pletcher go to the California Derby with Connemara, when he can get graded earnings against a 5 horse field on a surface he already won over?

Good question. Is it possible he just wants him to go 8.5 rather than the mile? That is the only think I can think of, although given that there will be plenty of opportunities at 8.5 in the months ahead, I'm not sure how much sense that reason would make.
All in all it seems like the San Rafael would make more sense.

Edit: He would be the longest shot in the race and is significantly slower (per the Beyer numbers) off his last. Makes sense now I guess

Conveyance has apparently been sold to a relative of Sheik Mohammed; listed as owned by Zabeel Racing.

Buckpasser 01-13-2010 03:57 PM

Conveyance Sold!!!

Thoroughbred Legends has sold Conveyance to Sheikh Rashid al-Maktoum's Zabeel Racing. Will stay with Baffert in California.

Shipping to Dubai for the Festival?

Sightseek 01-13-2010 04:03 PM

Of all of that money they have spent at auction in the past year or two this was the only horse that could run.

did they recoup the investment in one day?

Franny Freud

This is a nice race!!

Fyi, John Terranova trains Negligee who raced in the recent Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita.

Franny Freud just outlasted Negligee in the Ontario Debutante Stakes at Woodbine back in August.

Indian Charlie 01-13-2010 10:03 PM

I must say I am quite dismayed.

Thankfully it will stay with Baffert at least at not end up in the incompetent hands of Harty or that weird mumbling gibberish speaking guy.

I believe he won the Hollywood Starlet with Laragh in 2008.

Any thoughts on the San Fernando?

Papa Clem stretching back to two turns here after the good comebacker in the Malibu looks terrific to me. Using Mythical Power with him.

Fried? What are you talking about Freddy? He came back from a 90 day break with a very solid Malibu. And he's worked fabulously since.

I really want to bet Mr. Hot Stuff in this race and it makes me feel like a bad person.

I thought the Malibu spot was ridiculous. Although my friends thought I was an idiot for suggesting it was a horrible spot. The horse has not stopped and Stute drilled him what like 5 days after the Malibu. When did the horse win last Purim? I thought getting him an allowance race around two turns against softer made a bunch more sense.Instead Stute races him in the Malibu? Why the Malibu, was winning a 7f race at 3 such a big deal? I would have thought getting him a win in the San Antonio and then maybe the better G1's as a handicap horse made more sense. Now he is back off a hurried "sort of layoff" and a big effort in the Malibu.. I think he is complete toast. My opinion is very unpopular among much smarter then I.. But I still think he is doomed..

Stute drilled him days after the Malibu? You think Stute found the Sheppard piece entertaining?

90 day break on a horse that shipped the globe and ran hard all of 09...How many of those 90 days did the horse really have to let down especially around his connections. I doubt the horse had 3 real weeks of R&R

I'm confidant that owner-breeder Bo Hirsch would disagree with you. The Malibu is the last Gr. I of the year for three year olds, so he was able to end the season as "Gr. II winner, Gr. I placed at 3". They're trying to build a resume. And I'd say that an old school-style trainer like Stute is quite happy to go from 7f to 8.5f second off the layoff. This is the "Strub Series" after all... It has a rather time-tested aspect to it.

I really don't get the last time to get a G1 on him against 3 year olds. Is anyone going to think of Papa Clem as a great 3 year old. Moreover his best chance to get a book full is to be an excellent 4 year old and potentially be arounf for a BC race. Will see I realize my opinion is deemed moronic by many.

Everyone here understands that reference. We all dressed in costume as Haman, Mordecai, and Esther.....

NTamm1215 01-15-2010 10:17 AM

I wasn't particularly taken with Papa Clem's Malibu and see him as likely to be horribly overbet in this race.

Yeah, you have to think the price might be right coming off that tenth place finish in a race at a distance that didn't suit him, and where he was extremely wide. Even by Baffert's usual standards he has been going extremely fast in the mornings since that race. I like his chances too.

my miss storm cat 01-16-2010 12:39 AM

I think Gallant Son wins the San Fernando. (As an aside I'm not seeing anyone beating Conveyance. No point in playing, just a fun race to watch).

Race 6, however, is interesting... :$:

Well Baffert admitted himself that Mythical Power is better on dirt....maybe today proved that theory.

alysheba4 01-17-2010 06:43 AM

maybe, or maybe he wasnt quite good enough.

Indian Charlie 01-17-2010 01:17 PM

Soooo, let me get this straight.

Conveyance gets a 90 BSF for going 136.45.
Papa Clem gets a 96 BSF for going 142.64, while getting the mile in 136.64??

And people say musicals are gay?

The Indomitable DrugS 01-17-2010 07:32 PM

Since when is 1:36.45 at a mile as fast as 1:42.64 at 8.5f?

Papa Clem should have been 3 points higher than Conveyance, not 6. But yes, 1:42.64 is faster than 1:36.45.

It's slightly faster.

And according to something I read somewhere else, the track got faster later in the day. Who knows about that.
