5th Race at Philadelphia Park

Just watched the fifth race at Philadelphia Park and I saw something I've never seen before. Two jockeys exchanged punches during the race. TVG said the two riders were Vaz and Santos. I've never seen jockeys fight during the race.

Holy Christ

It is actually coming out of the first turn, I have never seen anything like it. Vaz backhands Santos and he punches back, and then he whips him in the back. And this was after Vazwanted to get out and cut off everyone and Santos said something to him.

OMG!

"Riders exchanged blows" in the chart...CLASSIC

they should shoot the next season of Jockeys out at Philly park.

Fearless Leader 01-08-2010 02:11 PM

A pair of complete ****ing retards who put both themselves and the other riders and horses in the race in harms way because they are stupid. If the Philadelphia Park stewards have any sense, they will suspend both of them for a very long time, because that is exactly what they deserve. NO EXCUSES ACCEPTABLE. :zz: :zz: :zz:

Reminds of when Red Pollock started out riding at the bush tracks in the movie Seabiscuit.

Aqueduct had a sick such a race a few years back. This was really entertaining stuff.. The best part is the stewards let Vaz race the rest off the card

:zz: I assume he was defending himself from attack on the backstretch?

Crazy stuff. Dangerous, unprofessional stuff. Would have loved to have been in the jock's room afterwards. Tony Black needs to take them behind the woodshed.

freddymo 01-08-2010 03:36 PM

I get that you can't stop to idiots from behaving crazy..I don't understand either of those two being allowed to ride again until the matter was dealt with. NOT restricting them (Vaz) from riding is a worse crime IMO

It is about to be on Sportscenter, they just had it on the opening....

Riot 01-08-2010 05:40 PM

Geesh, it looks like Vaz deliberately grabbed rein and took Devine Light out to try and take out Santos (he appears to run Devine Light right into him, purposely), and when that didn't work, he started punching him.

Did anything happen before that? I can't believe they let these guys ride the rest of the day.

Thanks for the replay post.

Unbelieveable. The sport can barely get any positive coverage for the Rachael's Woodward win or even the Breeders cup. But I'm sure that this $7500 dollar claiming race will national news for the next few days.

no such thing as bad publicity.

I am surprised Philly Park didn't call ESPN and ask to be announced as "Philly Park and Casino"

The stewards don't toss these two, they ought to be fired!

herkhorse 01-08-2010 06:21 PM

I don't suppose they gave anyone their $ back either.

I strongly disagree. Just more negative attention to the sport.

Honestly this is as close to mainstream as racing gets. America loves violence.

This is from a Philly paper.

Philly Park jockeys in brawl during race

Two jockeys at Philadelphia Park got into a fistfight yesterday, which wouldn't be big news - except the jockeys were riding in the fifth race when the brawl broke out.

Philly Park Jocks Await Stewards Decision

By Claire Novak

A sentence has yet to be handed down by Philadelphia Park stewards in the case of two jockeys who were involved in a mounted altercation at the Bensalem, Pa. track on Jan. 8. Stewards told Ademar Santos and Eriluis Vaz, the riders involved in the incident, that they would reach a decision 7-10 days after a hearing held on Jan. 21.

“The stewards are supposed to give us a decision sometime within the next week or so,” said Carson Phelps, agent for Santos. “They didn’t want the agents in the room so I don’t know much more than that.”

Lou Albertrani, Vaz’s agent, did not return calls seeking comment.

Santos was struck by jockey Vaz after exchanging words with him in the middle of the fifth at Philadelphia on Jan. 8. Vaz’s mount, Divine Light, had bumped Santos (aboard Mi Helena), causing him to be pinched between horses. After Santos spoke to Vaz, Vaz punched Santos in the face. Santos swung back, then Vaz struck at him with his whip before Santos’ mount drew away. Vaz and Divine Light finished fifth but were disqualified to ninth. Mi Helena and Santos finished ninth.

“The kid I’ve got is pretty quiet, he just came here to do his job, he wasn’t looking for trouble,” said Phelps. “He just kept telling the stewards to look at the films, you can see who threw the first punch. He’s lucky the other guy didn’t pull him off the horse.”

Vaz issued a public apology Jan. 10 to the horse racing network TVG, saying he made “a terrible mistake… used bad judgment, and should have handled the situation differently.”

Both riders are suspended from the track until they receive their sentence.

Hefty Suspensions for 2 Philly Park Jockeys

Quote:

According to the Philadelphia Daily News, jockey Erluis Vaz will be suspended for 200 days and Ademar Santos will serve a 90-day suspension as a result of their actions Jan. 8 during the fifth race, a contest for $7,500 claimers.

As a result of the stewards’ action, Vaz will be suspended from Jan. 9 through July 27 and Santos’ suspension runs through April 8. Neither has ridden since Jan. 9, so the suspensions will be retroactive.

Patrick333 02-06-2010 12:54 PM

Good to Vaz got what he deserved.
