serena is going to jog in this hooves much like rachel did in the oaks , whoever gets through on this side of the draw will be a sacrifical lamb

I hope you're right but Serena wil probably win. She should be forced to have to play men. Its unfair she gets to play against sweethearts like Kim Clijsters and those 2 blondes who played last night.

Speaking of men, the semis is shaping up to be dandies. Djokovich and Federer made it through. Wont be so easy for Nadal and Del Potro, who are the 2 favorites to win today and join Fed and Djokovich on Saturday.

Gander 09-10-2009 01:31 PM

Oudin got doused last night! That was a schooling the other, more built blonde put on. Sweet little Melanie was gracious in defeat, applauding her competitor and the crowd, wishing her good luck in her next match. Now, only if the Williams sisters would retire for good and be replaced by respectful young blondes like Oudin. :D

Meanwhile is Roger Federer for real? 22 straight semis? Gunning for his 6th straight title at the US Open...wow.

Gander 09-11-2009 07:02 PM

No tennis tonight.

Ugh.

Nadal-Gonzalez may have to play as many as 8 sets tomorrow, considering their match could easily go 5 sets (its currently in a 2nd set tiebreak) and the winner plays again in the afternoon against a very hot Del Potro.

Smooth Operator 09-11-2009 09:34 PM

Yeah, The Great Swiss's consistency and durability over the years has been remarkable to say the least. Would love to see him take down number six at Flushing Meadows.

ESPN reporting that both men's semis will take place on Sunday ... assuming the Nadal match is completed tomorrow.

ateamstupid 09-11-2009 10:10 PM

The U.S. Open has its own asinine scheduling ritual to blame for the delayed men's and women's finals. This scheduling of singles quarters and semis third, fourth and fifth on Ashe is just playing with fire. Before they got the roof at Wimbledon, they always started with the singles on Centre Court by 1:00 at the latest so that if the rains came or the matches took too long, they still got them in. I understand the USTA loves its primetime matches, but put the stupid doubles on Armstrong and make sure you get the singles matches in. Of course today that wouldn't have mattered, but Nadal and Gonzo would've completed their quarter Thursday and there still would've been a chance at a Sunday final. Now it's Monday at the earliest.

I wonder what time the men's final is on Monday? Would it be prime time (I hope)?

Any way you slice it, whoever plays in the final will provide a great match.

I lean towards Fed and Del Potro, and will take a stand that Del Potro wins the final.

Gander 09-12-2009 02:23 PM

Nadal crushes Gonzalez in the conclusion of their quarterfinal.

The semis tomorrow.

Wonder what time and what channel (with the NFL having games on all day)?

Anyone know if the times are scheduled yet?

Federer and Murray played their final on a Monday afternoon last year. If Delpo plays like he did the last 2 1/2 sets against Cilic, he can beat either of the top two. I don't see it happening though.

I do sort of remember the Monday final, now that you mention it. Was that because of rain delays or did that Monday happen to be Labor Day last year?

I like Del Potro a lot tomorrow and in the final, especially if Djokovich is somehow able to beat Federer.

It was because of rain. The men's final is always the Sunday after Labor Day.

Gander 09-12-2009 06:44 PM

They will try and play the women's semis tonight. I dont think its being shown on TV though, because of all the college football.

Nadal and Del Potro will play at noon tomorrow. I think Nadal will have a very tough time breaking his serve. Nadal's best shot is to keep this thing going a long time and getting into tiebreakers. Should be a great day of sports.

Pretty sure the women's semis will be on CBS tonight if they're played.

Clijsters takes opening set from Serena. Some seriously good tennis going on.

GPK 09-12-2009 09:56 PM

Wow...what a way to end. Would love to know everything Serena said to the line judge.

Something about stuffing the racket down her throat. It was a bad call, but Serena's a brat and she took her frustration about being smacked by Clijsters out on the lineswoman. A real shame for Clijsters, who is playing out of her mind right now.

Yeah Joe, it was a sh*tty time for that kinda call. But you're right, Kim was outplaying her in every aspect.

GPK 09-12-2009 10:09 PM

It looked like she was holding a ball and saying "I will shove this f*cking ball down your throat"

ateamstupid 09-12-2009 10:10 PM

They showed the replay and you can read her lips: "I'm gonna take this ball and shove it in your ****ing mouth" or something very similar. It was a bad call, but she's a bully who couldn't take being outplayed. Good riddance.

That's what it looked like she said.

Gander 09-13-2009 07:02 AM

Not a shame at all for Clijsters. She was wonderful and this amazing comeback continues. Par for the course for Serena Willimas. Shes a whiney, disrespectful bitch. Kind of like Andy Roddick but only really good.

Coach Pants 09-13-2009 09:13 AM

That was a horrible call and certainly the match wasn't over at 15-30. It didn't help that the line judge looked like an oompa loompa.

Jimmy croaked so I will take on PG1985

ateamstupid 09-14-2009 04:44 PM

del Potro is embarrassingly bad today. I've never seen Federer serve this terribly and delPo still hasn't made a dent on Fed's serve.

ateamstupid 09-14-2009 05:16 PM

That's more like it. If there's one chink in Federer's armor it's that he loses his **** when he has a close call go against him on replay. Him not being able to let go the 30-30 forehand at 5-3 was the turning point in the second set.

Great call Tim. It certainly helped that Fed made 62 errors and couldn't get a first serve in all night, but delPo showed a lot of heart and played a brilliant 3 1/2 sets to earn this title. A terrific end to grand slam tennis in '09.

SCUDSBROTHER 09-14-2009 08:19 PM

Fed doesn't really want to fight(he wants to dominate.) Once he realizes someone is playing up to his level, he almost always starts pouting and almost loses interest. Like he said(when asked about the 5th set,) "He got ahead 3-0, and that was it. Pretty obvious what happened." That's really the only weakness he has ever had. His ways have always been that of the rich kid with manners.

Thanks Joey. Great end as right. Enjoyed this match very much. I watched the first set at work and was afraid this thing would be over by the time I got home. LOL, went to after 8. I like this guy Del Potro and hes got a lot of Grand Slams in his future. Cant believe he is still only 20. What a forehand...wow, one of the best I have ever seen. Thats going to hurt a lot of opponents and hes really getting the hang of playing defense too.

I tend to agree. In general, was a little surprised he lost tonight because it was a Grand Slam final but when this match got some legs, it didnt come at all of a shocker. It was pretty evident who wanted this more tonight and who the better player was (tonight). This kid has manners and a huge likeability factor.

I haven't seen this many successful challenges of calls during a match. How often do you have a half dozen calls overturned like this in a grand slam final. It seemed to change the flow of both the 4th and 5th sets. If this was before the "eye" RF would have likely won.
