Funny Cide to the Woodward?

From TT.....

Funny Cide possible for Woodward

After registering his first graded stakes win in 21 months in the Dominion Day Stakes (Can-G3) on July 1 at Woodbine, Funny Cide might move back into Grade 1 company in the Woodward Stakes (G1) on September 2 at Saratoga Race Course.

Trainer Barclay Tagg would prefer to start the six-year-old Distorted Humor gelding in a lighter spot, but he has not found a suitable one for the 2003 champion three-year-old male and Kentucky Derby (G1) winner.

"It depends on who goes in there and who doesn't," Tagg said on Tuesday. "We've got that on the radar screen. I'd rather have him in an easier race than that, but there just isn't much around for him. There were a couple of races this summer, but we just opted not to go to them because of the hot weather."

Tagg has long maintained that hot weather can be particularly bothersome for Funny Cide, who has a history of respiratory problems.

Funny Cide has not raced in a Grade 1 since he finished sixth in the 2005 Suburban Handicap (G1). His last Grade 1 win came in the 2004 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (G1). He won the 1 1/4-mile Dominion Day by 1 1/2 lengths for his second win in seven starts this year.

"He's not a great hot weather horse," Tagg said. "Even up there although he won and it wasn't the hottest day in the world, it was around 85 or 86 degrees. He didn't run one of his better numbers or anything like that. He's doing well. He had a nice gallop this morning and a nice breeze a couple days ago. We're just trying to wait out the summer and keep him fresh and happy."

Grade 1 winners Commentator, Flower Alley, and Silver Wagon are also candidates for the 1 1/8-mile Woodward, along with Whitney Handicap (G1) runner-up Sun King.—Jeff Lowe

Don't do it, Barclay!!!

1st_Saturday_in_May 08-09-2006 10:26 AM

God I hope not.

my miss storm cat 08-09-2006 10:29 AM

Maybe if we all wish really hard.....

paisjpq 08-09-2006 10:29 AM

sounds like Knowlton and the boys have got a bug up barclay's *ss. There is no way a trainer as good as Tagg has any desire to put FC in that race. If they would stop chasing glory in the big yellow school bus and just let their trainer do whats right for the horse (spotting him where he can win) I would be a lot happier.:(

:D

That was a great line and yeah, agreed.

Coach Pants 08-09-2006 10:34 AM

They still haven't come to terms with the fact their 15 minutes are up.

eurobounce 08-09-2006 10:38 AM

Man I hope he runs in the Woodward. Shows one more time that he isnt Grade I caliber. Tagg cant find a spot for Funny Cide because he cant find a Graded race in the summer where it is contested in cool temperatures, and the field isnt any good. I like Tagg, cant stand the Sackotoga boys and I am neutral on Funny Cide. But come on, run this horse is some allowance races and get him 3 wins or so and then move up the conditions.

slotdirt 08-09-2006 10:43 AM

I don't have a problem with him running in the Woodward, I really don't.

the sakatoga guys have a complete hard-on about winning a race @ saratoga...they won't give up. is FC even eligible for an allowance race?

slotdirt 08-09-2006 10:47 AM

I don't know what ALW conditions Funny Cide would be eliglble for these days.

Just give him a GI shot. He's ran pretty well in his last couple of starts after that miserable sprint performance this year. I bet he runs better than we all think.

Gander 08-09-2006 10:55 AM

I have a big problem running him in the Woodward. I have a wedding that day and wont be able to see any of the races. For him to win a grade 1 at Saratoga and me miss it would not be cool.

slotdirt 08-28-2006 01:01 PM

10,000 Funny Cide posters to be available on Woodward day....I'm thinking the champ has to run, right?

sumitas 08-28-2006 01:31 PM

i think The Champ can take this field. Hope he runs and wins at the Spa. it would be one for the ages.

slotdirt 08-28-2006 01:46 PM

That would be one of the biggest upsets we've seen in a while, especially at a meet where every big race was seemingly won by a sheikh. I hope he wins, I surely do.

Danzig2 08-28-2006 03:33 PM

isn't invasor headed there?

ah, who knows....even a blind squirrel and all that....

I don't either. He ran a very good race earlier this year in which he displayed that tenacity of his.

Danzig 08-28-2006 07:14 PM

oh yeah, forgot about ol' suave. poor guy....

Suffolk Shippers 08-28-2006 07:57 PM

Tagg, if you read this board, I found a race for you:

Sept 30, 2006 GII $300,000 added
Massachusetts Handicap-Suffolk Downs (SUF)

I can't see many top handicap horses prepping in the Mass Cap 5 weeks out for the Breeders Cup, but I could be wrong. It's not hot in Boston at the end of September, either. If this isn't the perfect spot for him, I don't know what is. If they race him in Woodward, I imagine it's the Sackatoga boys forcing it down Tagg's throat.

Come to Suffolk, Barclay!

Danzig 08-28-2006 08:22 PM

maybe they think some of showing ups talents have rubbed off on funny cide.

ya know, it's a shame really. we all decry the fact that derby winners disappear faster than a tax refund check in a wal-mart, and here's this guy still trudging on. it would be nice if he could do SOMETHING....

Zieg its amazing how his personna has fallen. A couple of summers in a row when he came out to breeze or just gallop in the morning Mary Ryan would say and hers Funny Cide and people would clap or cheer or go ooohhhh.
This past summer when he came out in the morning she would say it and noone would say a peep.
It is sad. here he is still racing and trying and not really appreciated for his gameness and just the fact that hes still trying, even if hes not as fast as he used to be.

sumitas 08-28-2006 08:36 PM

he's winning and in the money all the time. i'd say he's in top form. Suffolk spotted a good race for him... a lot of "fans" can't remember who ran last week let alone win, when did FC win the KD ? ummmm, ahhh...

i do appreciate oracles's first hand observations such as this. even his take on the personalities of Barbaro and Showing Up were fun to read.

deltaforce97 08-28-2006 08:37 PM

I thought they would were waiting for the right state-bred race at Saratoga......guess not!!

bah, fans...so many only love you when you're a winner. he finds the right way sometimes.

it wouldn't break my heart one bit for him to win if he goes. but then, i can't remember the last time a horse winning bothered me...

oh wait...yeah, i can.

G--D--- birdstone....

sorry, that comes over me about three times a year. i'm good til december now!

Dunbar 08-29-2006 05:49 AM

I am not overly impressed with the apparent Woodward lineup. I think Funny Cide has a decent shot against this group. As has been said many times, the handicap division is not very deep this year. I'd be willing to bet FC finishes in the first half of the field. And there's a distinct chance he could win it.

Buffymommy 08-29-2006 07:53 AM

Going with a tri box: Sun King/Suave/Second of June

Funny Cide in 4th. :)

Slewbopper 08-29-2006 08:02 AM

Barclay shouldn't have any complaints about the weather or track condition for the Woodward. As of now, it looks like the track will be fast and the temp about 75. Finishing 3rd gets him 60K, the same as winning a 100K state bred stake.

slotdirt 08-29-2006 08:22 AM

Are they even holding the Mass Cap this year? They shut it down last year, IIRC.

September 30--Kelso Breeders' Cup Handicap (Belmont Park), Oak Tree Stakes and Yellow Ribbon Stakes (Santa Anita) and Massachusetts Handicap (Suffolk Downs), 4 p. m., ESPN.

The purse is listed as 600K.

slotdirt 08-29-2006 08:47 AM

What year was it - 2004 maybe - where there was that three way stretch duel in the Mass Cap betwixt Funny Cide, Offlee Wild, and some long shot? Offlee Wild won by a head or so, I think. Gotta love those Wild Agains.

eurobounce 08-29-2006 08:55 AM

I love any race the Funny Cide runs in. The New Yorkers will also drop some cash on him to win and he never does. Keeps the odds of a horse that I love as an underlay. Got to love those New Yorkers when it comes to Funny Cide.
