If he's anything like his mom, he's already past his prime.

Do you think Shug would have named Fuentes if he felt this horse could run....or was ready to run?
|
Combined number of Shug McGaughey wins with firsters in NY on the dirt over the last three years and Raymundo Fuentes wins at this meet...

Shug changed parties?

Would have to be Smuggler. Came right to my mind.

Banker's Buy....Gotham day at Aqueduct. How could I forget.....I bet the second finisher at 15:1. |

He also won with a turf horse called Tourism but Banker's Buy is the real answer. NT |

He's won with three turf firsters in NY, all last year, but only the one on the dirt.

Miss Ocean City is the only Mineshaft I recall winning first out, ever. I'm sure there are others, but I've not seen 'em. She's turn out to be a dud. Leon Blusewicz (sp?) has her now. She was up the track in a small stake in the last week or two.

Mineshaft's top earner thus far- the one and only Casino Drive. NT |
It may have been a few weeks ago, I'll have to see if I can find it. Possibly in MD...

I know there's some railing on Shug in here but Storm Flag Flying was a nutcase when she came into the paddock at Saratoga. She was flipping-out, freaking-out etc. Her mother had a similar disposition. Shug was able to work through these issues and still get them to run, which is not easy to do.
My first BC in person was '95 when My Flag nailed Cara Rafaela on the wire, who of course went on to foal Bernardini. Lukas was blanked in that race despite having three starters and the favorite. |

This race appears very interesting and competitive.
#1 - decent pedigree and ok works on poly but probably won't fire first out and will be better down the road #2 - SERIOUS works from a trainer w/ a good FTS ROI, but I'm not crazy about the fact that he's a Giant's Causeway. Dam was ok. #3 - has run well in both starts w/ some trouble #4 - These are the types that Albertrani is dangerous with. Nondescript works and mediocre pedigree (sold for a lot, though), but it may be hard to gauge this one's ability from the PPs alone. #5 - Already been discussed - best to wait w/ him. Incredible pedigree obviously. . . #6 - $1M purchase trained by KMc - bullet works, too. Has to be respected at what might be underlaid odds. #7 - Another third time starter who has run creditably. Notice winner of debut. #8 - Not sure what to make of this one - probably not much #9 - Zito w/ a Birdstone that sold for a lot. Decent works, too, but I'd be inclined to wait on him. #10 - Contender off of the debut #11 - Another obvious contender |

wow this topic went everywhere. I really was expecting a thorough conversation about Fuentes.
|
Sounded to me like Shug thought the colt colt needed a race AT LEAST.. I didn't get the feeling he was so impressed with the colt at all..
Also sounded like you could pitch Imperial Council on the cut back and VCauseway.. It sounded like they were reaching for a solution to slow horses.. |

Interesting jockey choice for Colors Flying

Isn't there a Storm Flag Flying in this race debuting too?
|
I had almost every 2/4 tri except for 2/4/5. AWESOME!

I thought it was a little light. . .

The exacta was WAY light considering the win prices. However, it was two firsters and there is no way Kiaran's horse was even money in exotics. That was insane. |
