Great horse and a great sire. One of the last great Maryland breds, along with two of his sons.

Yes, he was a marvelous horse, but what I remember best about him because I was there along with 23,000 other people, was him getting beat by Cheapskate at 72-1 in the 1986 St. Paul Derby at then Canterbury Downs.

This may be apocryphal, but I remember reading, a few years back, that he liked to travel so much that even after he was pensioned, they'd load him up in a trailer every once in a while and just take him for a ride. He was an admirable horse.

i saw this earlier, was going to post, but gave up. loved this horse. one of the stars of md racing and breeding, so of course i was that much more proud to have a horse like that come from 'home'. he was an awesome horse, i hate to see that he's passed on-but he had a good, long life. i just hope that include can do well at stud, seems to be broad brushes best chance to carry on the line. you could certainly do worse than have a horse like broad brush.

I can't find any video on Youtube of one of the most incredible races EVER...when Broad Brush blew the turn in the Pennsylvania Derby and rallied from the parking lot to win up the outer rail under Angel Cordero. In the "legends of racing" tour pre-BC this year, Cordero called it one of, if not THE, most eventful big race win of his career...and we know he's had a lot of em.

Dickie Small said tonight he has a tape of it from a racing blooper show.

TRIVIA: Who was the person credited for getting Broad Brush to change direction back down the stretch by waiving his arms from behind the outer rail?

Julie Krone? Howard Cosell? King T.?

wasn't it a trainer? woody stephens maybe? i remember the story, but man i can't remember the person.

The veterinarian Dr. James Penny... There is a race named after him at Philly Park.

We also have the Mrs. Penny Stakes too...named after Dr. Penny's wife for kicking him out of the house that day ensuring his place in history when Broad Brush blew the turn.

I read that too. I think it might have been in the Blood-Horse. He'd stick his head out the window like a dog does and get mighty angry if it had been awhile since he was taken for a ride.

Small explained the back story of why Broad Brush came to like riding in the trailer.

He was all that he is given credit for here, and what an oldtimer might call a " hickory " horse--tough--and he meant business .

Toughness was a trait that Broad Brush passed on to many of his offspring. We got to see a lot of them during the few years that Small wintered at Fair Grounds.

i read that he thought he would have to jump clear, rather than take the chance of being on the horse should he try to leap the rail.
i also read after the race that he said he'd never ride that blankety blank horse again...of course, he rode him again!

What wonderful recollections . I recall the Kelly Kip thread as well , where very interesting remembrances were recalled .

Ack Ack was a pretty cool horse too (his sire). That horse could do anything!

they have a show on rfdtv that once had an episode with racehorses from days gone by. they showed video of the horses and some of their races-ack ack being one of them. i hadn't realized til that show that ack ack had been owned later in his career by a big hollywood celeb. they also showed round table, swaps, silky sullivan....


a second trivia question-who was ack ack's star owner?

He is, and always will be, my favorite horse. I grew up in Maryland and watched him run several times in person, including the absolutely crazy Pennsylvania Derby.
