Sumwonlovesyou retired..

Below is a copy of the notice sent to Dee Tee 01 Partners regarding the injury that has ended Sumwonlovesyou's comeback attempt and racing career.

Dear Dee Tee 01 Partners,

It's taken me the better part of the day to complete this note as the news today was exceedingly difficult to deal with... Sumwonlovesyou has torn the upper suspensory ligament in her lower left front and will be unable to continue her racing career.

The injury made itself apparent Tuesday, and though the swelling had come down today, scans revealed the extent of the damage. Given her age and prior injury/illness, we would be forced to sit her out at least 6 months before re-evaluating, and there would still be no guarantee she could return at that point. As a result, Chuck has made the call that she be retired.

We have spent the day making arrangements to have Sumwonlovesyou bred in the next 17-21 days so she could deliver approximately an April 2010 foal. We will seperately address the future of the original 'Dee Tee 01' partnership and the options regarding the morphing of it into a breeding deal of some kind.

Needless to say, for us collectively, this is both a sad day and one filled with many emotions. For the majority of you, this was your 'first horse' as an owner, and marks your involvement in racing on a very different level. Sumwonlovesyou brought us into the sales ring and to four of the game's most famed racing ovals: Keeneland, Churchill, Arlington and Saratoga.

In many ways, no matter where the Dee Tee Stables experience takes us long term, those first 8 months with "SWLY" may never be duplicated for the sheer excitement, drama, tension and exhileration produced.

Sumwonlovesyou took us from anonymous fandom to owners of the public betting favorite on a Saratoga Sunday. Though she could not get us into the winner's circle, it certainly wasn't for lack of effort on her part. The harrowing second place finishes in top company Derby Week, through the Arlington summer try, made 2007 a thrilling blur for our fledgling stable, and helped give rise to another 7 runners that carry or are soon to carry our Lime and Royal silks. And while there will hopefully be many more wins to go with the two by Kickin N Screamin, the agonizing but emboldening efforts of Sumwonlovesyou will always be the foundation of friendships on which Dee Tee Stables was built.

Thanks of course go to Chuck first and foremost for identifying SWLY in the catalog, authoring her improvement and shouldering a financial burden while trying to get her back to the races. Thanks to the entire CES Racing Team for their efforts with her and Cherie particularly who was frequently worn out by Sumwon in the mornings.

Bethani White gets our unending thanks as well. If Sumwonlovesyou goes on to a productive career as a broodmare, it is because Bethani likely saved her life with a decisive call for veterinary intervention on her infected hoof last summer.

Thanks of course to the 50 or so of you who eagerly sent $500 apiece into the mail to make an unlikely dream come true for yourselves and people you didn't know.

And finally, thanks to the mint-crazed daughter of Came Home and Mysterious Moll who will never stop being our favorite racehorse... the perfectly named Sumwonlovesyou.

With appreciation for your support and enthusiasm,
Steve Byk and Chuck Simon

SniperSB23 05-06-2009 09:57 PM

Damn, too bad. Was hoping she'd make it back but I guess it wasn't meant to be. Enjoy your broodmare years Sumwon.

stevepopyak 05-06-2009 09:59 PM

That's tough ... she brought us a lot of fun and excitement.

Danzig 05-06-2009 09:59 PM

certainly not the news i expected to end my day on. it's too bad that she's suffered yet another injury. i know we all were hoping to see her run again. it's a disappointment that it's not going to happen-but a relief to know that her injury won't compromise her having a long and happy retirement.

it's been a thrill from day one-she's been a lot of fun to follow since the initial excitement that day we got her in the sale.

thanks to chuck, who went above and beyond in taking care of a horse who was shelved for a year, with no real surety of her making a penny in return.

a sad day, but then-not so much. she showed tenacity in overcoming her hoof injury, we're lucky really to even still have her. i look forward to next april, if a deal can be made.

As Steve said, a big thank you to everyone who was involved. :{>:

Any ideas as to who she will be sent to?

Any other ownership group would have given up on her long ago. I can't even imagine the expense that Chuck had to bear to get us this far. Thank you to all for your great efforts and care of our wonderful horse. I am excited for the next phase of her career and hope to see her first folas racing at saratoga in a few summers.

The original and best!

Sad news, but glad it seems like she will be OK. Big thanks to Chuck and team for picking her out, turning her around and hanging in there with her for so long.

The best $500 ever spent.

otisotisotis 05-07-2009 07:40 AM

Thanks to all involved, especially the big girl!
Those are thrilling, cherished memories that I thought I would never get to experience, and I am very grateful that she will be able to move on to something else.

SuffolkGirl 05-07-2009 07:56 AM

:(

Oh no. Just when I thought the day could not get any worse, I read this post...

Thank you Chuck, Steve and everyone else who put this together. Many many thanks to Cheri, Bethani and the nameless others that took such good care of her during her convalescence.

As Paul said, if this had been any other ownership she would have been given up on long ago.

I hope she is happy and comfortable. She had such an amazing personality, I hope she is able to pass that on to her foals.

I look forward to regular updates about her new career.

Thank you Sumwonlovesyou

Antitrust32 05-07-2009 08:55 AM

Steve,

I hope you are doing okay!! That was an incredible piece of writing.. very emotional and touching... made me tear up. Thank you for that heartfelt note.

Also thanks to you and Chuck and Thebby for doing the right thing for the horse.

While I wasnt a part owner of this filly... she will always be at the top of my list as a favorite race horse, and horse in general. The summer of 2007 in Saratoga Spring was by far the best for me in the 13 years I have spent my summers there.. Dont think it will ever be as good. Not only was I able to spend lots of time with the beautiful filly, but I made lifetime friendships with tons of great people that I probably would have never met if it wasnt for Sumwonlovesyou.

The retirement news makes me sad, but we should all be so greatfull that she will be able to have a happy retirement and will be loved by so many across the country for the rest of her life!! Just make sure she gets that big butt of hers scratched once and awhile!!!! :p

:{>: you Sumwon!!

31lengths 05-07-2009 09:04 AM

Thankfully things were caught early. Although I was not part of the 01 partners, I still felt part of the family (as I'm sure most everyone here did as well). It was a HUGE thrill and honor to meet her in Saratoga in '07 & definitely made my decision easier in being part of the other partnerships.

Hugs, kisses and many peppermints to you gal. We wish you all the luck and happiness in the world !

A peppermint spoiled lass
Who was bred to run fast

Gave so much on the track
It’s time for her to lean back

In two or three years time
A baby will run in royal and lime

We can only hope she has the heart
Of the big girl who gave us our start

Thank you Sumwon

Watched the CD race that Luke K called with Calvin aboard again last night. SWLY showed both of these likely two future hall of fame inductees what it meant to have the heart of a champion that day, and how quickly the flame can be extinguished. The voice, the jock and our girl crossed paths for just minutes that day but I'll remember it for the rest of my life...

Willie M. was aboard. (Willie rode 2 at CD and once at AP) calvin didn't ride until the first saratoga race. but point well made.:o

stonegossard 05-09-2009 02:26 PM

Calvin Borel in The HOF.....that's hysterical. He will probably get in right after Stew Elliot.
