next years will be better than what they've brought thus far, right? at least, that's what they said this year.

Dave, first you let them stick their feet in their mouth further. Then you go for the throat.

Can't blame anyone for not having the winner, but I can find laughable anyone who took these Dubai bozos seriously. And I do.

True, sorry for ruining your fun.

I'm really annoyed at what happened to Papa Clem.

By the way, did anyone else find it really weird how Thorn Song was ridden in the early part of the stretch drive?

Was he asleep? Did he not want to hit the board? I don't understand these things, the nonsensical things that go through these pinheads tiny little brains.

CSC 05-02-2009 11:46 PM

Join The Dance, I am not saying Regal Ransom would have won today by any means, let me repeat just to be sure there is no misunderstanding Regal Ransom would not have won today, but Join The Dance was a factor today and in many ways should be given an 'assist' for the tap in scored by MTB. I guess he has earned his Acronym name also.

Sorry, I was still too livid over Gomez's ride on Visit to notice.

I actually cashed tickets on the Derby, BTW--4 $3 consos on the KO/WR/KD pick-3. Hooray!

Yeah, Visit could have helped my cause. Gomez had it in for me today I think.

He's a terrible fit for her.

I'd love to see them let her go to the lead, like she obviously wants!

I hate jockeys. That's probably more Frankelfuk's fault more than Gomez, but still.

And why did they put Frankel's dog in a dress and show it on TV? Was Willaim Wegman directing the broadcast?

eajinabi 05-03-2009 12:09 AM

Maybe Pletcher and the Dubai folk can team up for a 10 million dollar super-over-hyped inexperienced horse next year. Cant wait :)

You mean Bethany Frankelfuk?

Ick.

tector 05-03-2009 12:11 AM

What kind of name is Bethany for a dog?

I dunno but Bethenny is catchy. Her parents can't spell. Give her a break.

Well I'm a little late to the party but figured you'd have started a thread so here i am.

I was wrong, played both, congrats to anyone who had the winner. I sure as hell didn't.

Not making excuses but Desert Party to have surgery...

I think it's a lot easier to say who won't hit the board in a field of 20 than who will but whatever.

I was wrong... there you go.

They're both pretty nice horses though. I'm still a fan of both. :)

Frankel's barn is in a deep funk and has been for months. Notice that Stardom Bound's form took a nosedive after she was moved to Frankel?

Wow. That couldn't be more ridiculous.

If it was his barn that did her in, wouldn't she have improved when moved into Dutrow's care for the Ashland?

Come back with these statements when they go 0-20+ like Pletcher in the Derby..

Apparently Mine That Bird is a Muslim. I don't know how I feel about that...

Godolphin haven't got the know how to win a Derby, and the way it looks over here suggests they no longer know how to win a british classic either.

I had to laugh today when I saw that Crisford has said that Devotee will be taken to America as they think she's more suited to dirt.

Do they even know what they are doing?

thats the reason why - not the location.. they used to be able to get their horses to step off the plane and run really well first time up, but the last 5+ years, that hasnt been the case.

HaloWishingwell 05-05-2009 02:45 PM

VISIT would have been better named VISITTHATLIGHTER

I'm with you. I never thought they should be favored, but I thought they were very good horses, each with about a 15-1 chance to win. If they send two this nice over again next year, I'll be glad to bet them at 20-1.

desert party is going to have surgery to remove a chip. they say they don't know when it occured, but that it did have an impact on his derby run.

if they don't know when it occurred, how do they know it impacted the race?

You have to be kidding, mac.

If I gave Pletcher half the money these drape-wearing dopes have squandered on their Derby ambitions over the past decade, he'd have won at least 3 or 4 Derbies by now, if only inadvertantly.

On a ROI basis there is probably no other failure in the history of sport that approaches the Derby efforts of these clowns. Frank Stronach's race track management and growth plan looks positively visionary in comparison. The Yankees would have to sign 250 Carl Pavanos in a row to get into their league. Dan Synder is a sports wunderkind by the standard they have set.

You should be laughing your ass off at their futility in this endeavor, and reveling in their frustration. It proves Allah humbles us all.

youre correct, all Pletcher has had is garbage in his barn these last few years..

you have an agenda here against the Sheiks so I'm not going to bother.

Yes, I said Pletcher "had only garbage"--I guess the words "if only inadvertently" went over your head. What's the matter, too many syllables in that last one?

As I said before, sycophants to money and power are everywhere--and always embarrassing wherever you find them.

The following are the purchase prices for non-homebreds that Pletcher has started in the Derby over the last three years.

2009:

Dunkirk- $3,700,000
Advice- $170,000

2008:

Monba- $200,000

2007:

Scat Daddy- $250,000
Any Given Saturday- $1,100,000
Sam P.- $200,000
Cowtown Cat- $1,500,000

NT

tector 05-05-2009 06:05 PM

Those numbers are absolute chump change compared to what these people have spent on their Derby efforts, pocket change.

NTamm1215 05-05-2009 06:42 PM

I don't think Godolphin discloses private purchase prices but just this year they paid out a fortune between Vineyard Haven, Desert Party, and Regal Ransom. Midshipman, who they got in the purchase from Stonerside, cannot be quantified.

The Pletcher numbers listed are funny simply because of how much was paid for Cowtown Cat.

We could certainly go on forever about the two people whose ass the Derby has kicked harder than any other: TAP and Sheikh Mo.

Don't forget, Keyed Entry at $145,000...Pletcher must have really been smelling roses while saddling that one.

HaloWishingwell 05-05-2009 06:54 PM

Pletcher is like football coach Marty Schottenheimer he gets them there but can't get them over the mountain. Godolphin just shoots them at the foot of the mountain.

I think that in this type of discussion, it's also important to note the net worth of those that are spending the money. If it's $1 million to someone that has $50 million, it's 2% of their income. If it's $10 million to someone that has $1 billion, it's 1% of their income. As I've always said, when it comes to them, you can't just look at the purchase prices the way you would look at anyone else because they play on a different scale. The purchase of Mine that Bird worked out obviously because he won the Derby but the $400k that his owners paid for him in hopes of getting a Derby winner was a far bigger risk for them than the money Godolphin spent on Desert Party and Regal Ransom and Vineyard Haven and Midshipmen combined.

what if it was two starts ago? three? just seems that people don't go over a horse with a fine toothed comb til they lose. war emblem ran with chips, so did mineshaft. didn't rachel not vet out because of a chip?

i just think it's interesting they say they don't know when it occured-so how do you know when it had an affect?

Cannon Shell 05-05-2009 08:03 PM

Not sure why people who dont actually spend any money buying horses or trying to win races feel the need to knock those that do regardless of the amount of money spent. I doubt that Sheik Mo loses any sleep over not winning the Derby or that you find amusement in it. As proven again this year it is sometimes a fluky race that produces strange results.
